The moment Grandma saw Vera Xavier’s expression, she knew exactly what was going on. She reached out, gently tapping the spot between Vera’s eyebrows. "You, girl. It’s true what they say—a grown daughter can’t be kept from leaving the nest. Just make sure you handle yourself properly. Don’t let them look down on you, and don’t give anyone cause for gossip."
Vera Xavier winked at her grandma. "Don’t worry, Grandma. I was the top scholar in the province, remember? I know what I’m doing!"
With that, she walked out. Grandma watched her go and said with a smile, "That girl."
In truth, Grandma hadn’t really approved of Vera Xavier dating Nathaniel Nathan before. After all, the gap between their families’ social standing was just too wide.
But after Zachary Preston fell ill, Master Nathan came to visit him a few times. He even spoke with Vera’s grandparents about Nathaniel Nathan and Vera Xavier. His attitude was open-minded, and his words were filled with praise and fondness for Vera.
Only then did Grandma start to feel a bit more at ease. She decided to leave the matter in Vera’s hands. As for how things would ultimately turn out between Vera and Nathaniel Nathan, that would be up to fate.
When Vera Xavier arrived at the Nathan residence, Master Nathan beamed at the sight of her. "I just knew you’d come today! That’s why I had Lana Cheney go to the market early to buy a duck and a rabbit. I’ve been waiting for you to make me your beer-braised duck and spicy diced rabbit. You haven’t been around lately, so there’s been no one to make them for me. The cravings have been killing me!"
Vera Xavier was speechless. Master Nathan unceremoniously took the flower pastries from her hands and said, "Before you start cooking, come play a round with me. That rascal, Nathaniel, finally came home for a visit, but he’d rather sleep upstairs than play chess with me. The boy is absolutely heartless!"
The corner of Vera Xavier’s mouth twitched. ’Playing chess with Master Nathan is a total nightmare!’
Her eyes darted around for a moment before she said, "Mr. Nathan, I’ll go upstairs and get Nathaniel to come down and play with you!"
With that, she darted upstairs in a flash. A smile spread across Master Nathan’s lips, and he chuckled fondly. Then, he remarked meaningfully, "That boy, Nathaniel, is so lucky to have a grandfather like me. If I hadn’t tried to make her play chess, how would a shy young lady like her find an excuse to go see him?"
Nathaniel Nathan wasn’t sleeping; he was reading a book. He knew the moment Vera Xavier arrived and was just about to head downstairs. But when he heard Master Nathan’s words, he decided to wait upstairs instead. Sure enough, less than a minute later, Vera came running up.
’That settles it. Master Nathan is his real grandfather, no doubt about it.’
The moment Vera Xavier got upstairs, she saw that his bedroom door was wide open. He was inside, holding a book. She was still debating whether or not she should knock when he spoke. "You have two choices: come in and kiss me, or I’ll come out and kiss you."
Without hesitation, Vera Xavier entered his room and shut the door behind her.
Nathaniel Nathan couldn’t be bothered to keep up the pretense of reading anymore. He casually slid the book back onto the bookshelf and beckoned to her with his finger.
Vera Xavier pouted. ’Ugh, this man. So outwardly reserved, yet so arrogant. That beckoning finger gesture is so obnoxious! I’m not a puppy!’
Nathaniel Nathan’s brow furrowed slightly. ’Fine. If she won’t come to me, I’ll just go to her. It’s all the same.’
He leaned down to kiss her, but her face flushed slightly as she pushed him away. "Stop it. I have to go home in a bit. I came today to ask for your help."
Nathaniel Nathan huffed lightly. "You remembered to bring two boxes of flower pastries for Grandpa, but you came empty-handed when you needed my help? Vera Xavier, that’s not how things are done. You have to at least pay me a little interest first."
Vera Xavier decided to soothe his ego. "That’s because you and I are close. And we don’t need to be so formal with each other, do we?"
