Chapter 413: Unexpected
Chapter 413: Chapter 413: Unexpected
Irene Jensen was quite surprised to hear what Susan Caldwell said. She didn’t know about the other matters, but she knew perfectly well what had happened today, and it had absolutely nothing to do with Vera Xavier or Nathaniel Nathan.
She couldn’t resist tugging on Susan Caldwell’s sleeve. "Susan..."
"Shut up!" A vicious glint appeared in Susan Caldwell’s eyes. She had completely lost her usual dignified and gentle demeanor, and the expression she wore made her seem like a complete stranger to Irene Jensen.
But Susan Caldwell wasn’t looking at Irene Jensen. Her eyes were fixed on Nathaniel Nathan and Vera Xavier.
’She had never humbled herself to beg anyone like that before. After she’d pleaded so desperately today, Nathaniel Nathan still refused to help her. Fine. Today, she would make him pay for his choice. He was about to find out what she was capable of! She would make him get on his knees and beg her!’
’She could already picture the two of them begging her, and the thought alone was deeply satisfying! Better yet, she could use the opportunity to find that IOU Vera Xavier was holding and tear it to shreds. That would eliminate all her future troubles in one fell swoop.’
However, nothing went as she had expected. The police didn’t handcuff Vera Xavier and Nathaniel Nathan. Instead, the cuffs were snapped directly onto her wrists. With a look of utter shock, she stammered, "You’ve got the wrong person! They’re the violent ones!"
The officer said expressionlessly, "We’ve received a notice from our superiors about a fraud ring operating in the county, using forged credentials. Your group perfectly matches the description. Please come with us to the station for questioning."
Susan Caldwell froze for a full three seconds upon hearing this. Being sharp, she immediately understood that today’s events were, in all likelihood, a trap set for her. She had just been too enraged by being chased down to think things through clearly.
’In her mind, even if Vera Xavier wasn’t the one who set this trap, she was definitely involved! I really underestimated her before!’
’And if I were to resist violently now, I would just be falling right into Vera Xavier’s trap.’
While she was still reeling, Vera Xavier watched her intently. Just when Vera thought she was about to explode, Susan suddenly calmed down and turned her head to look directly at her.
Her gaze was venomous and cold, laced with deep jealousy and resentment.
Vera Xavier met her gaze with a smile, but her own eyes were distant and cold.
’Vera had heard what Susan said earlier perfectly clearly. See? Shameless people will sink to a new low every chance they get, and every time, they’ll get slapped right in the face for it.’
In Susan Caldwell’s eyes, Vera’s expression was a blatant provocation. She felt a knot of rage tighten in her chest, suffocating her.
Susan Caldwell screamed in her heart, ’I am the darling of fortune! Vera Xavier, you will die by my hand one day!’
She took a deep breath and turned back to the police officers. "You’ll regret this."
Having said her piece, she strode down the stairs and got into the police car of her own accord.
In all their years on the force, the officers had never seen such a brazen suspect.
Since she was with Susan Caldwell, Irene Jensen was taken away as well.
Once they were gone, quiet returned to the teahouse.
Alistair Forrest clicked his tongue several times, summing up the incident. "Leave it to the ugly ones to cause the most trouble."
Vera Xavier asked him, "You wouldn’t call Susan Caldwell ugly, would you?"
"When judging beauty, you look at the bone structure, not the skin," Alistair Forrest said. "Take that Susan Caldwell. Her bones are coarse, not at all delicate. No matter how glamorous she looks on the surface, she can’t hide the vulgarity that’s bone-deep. Did you notice her hands earlier?"
