Chapter 204: Chapter 148: The Good Person Card (3)
"Oh, really?"
"You haven’t changed your WeChat, have you?"
Sun Lan clearly hadn’t expected to be rejected. A hint of displeasure touched her face, but she asked anyway.
"I haven’t."
"Then some other time, maybe."
With that, Gao Yuan waved at Sun Lan and got into his Brabus G900.
The engine started with a tremendous roar. Sitting inside, Gao Yuan gave Sun Lan a small smile before driving off.
Sun Lan waited until Gao Yuan’s car was far in the distance before picking up her shopping bags and walking toward her own vehicle.
She tossed the shopping bags onto the passenger seat but didn’t start the car right away. Instead, she rolled down the window, lit a slim cigarette, and let memories of her college days flash through her mind.
Back then, she genuinely had a bit of a crush on Gao Yuan. They were often together, working on promotional posters for school, and over time, feelings had started to blossom between them.
It was something they both tacitly acknowledged, neither of them wanting to break the spell. But then one day, rumors started to spread that they were about to start dating.
Initially, Sun Lan didn’t pay the rumors much mind. But after she met a fourth-year senior, everything began to change.
The senior came from a wealthy family and took her to all sorts of fun places. Just as they were about to make their relationship official, he heard the rumors about her and Gao Yuan.
To prove her "innocence," she friend-zoned Gao Yuan—all while the senior was standing nearby, watching.
After that, the senior graduated, and she became known as the girl who was always being picked up in a luxury car.
The silver lining, if you could call it that, was that she successfully married the senior after she graduated. The reason, of course, was that she was pregnant—with a boy, no less.
She had actually invited Gao Yuan to her wedding, but he wasn’t in any mood to go at the time.
He had just graduated and was making a meager three thousand yuan a month. How could he afford a wedding gift? Besides, ever since she’d friend-zoned him, Gao Yuan had been deliberately keeping his distance from her.
Sun Lan finished her cigarette, let out a sigh, and started the car.
She had successfully married a rich man, but her life was far from happy. The only reason she could still maintain her lifestyle as a wealthy wife was because she had given him a son.
Every time she went home, she and her husband had almost nothing to say to each other. They lived like strangers under the same roof.
Running into Gao Yuan just now, the moment she recognized him, felt like a stone had been tossed into the stagnant pool of her life.
In that moment, her heart had leaped, her pulse quickening.
But,
after Gao Yuan refused her invitation for a drink and drove away, her life seemed to snap right back to its old track.
Still, Sun Lan felt a strong sense of dissatisfaction.
Especially that car he was driving. She knew it cost over ten million yuan. She even remembered her husband mentioning he’d seen that very car in Hang City recently, admitting that it was something no ordinary person could afford.
Sun Lan couldn’t help but wonder, ’If I had gotten together with Gao Yuan back then, would things be different now?’
Gao Yuan, meanwhile, was already home. The encounter with his "old classmate" was hardly even an interlude in his day.
They hadn’t spoken in years, so what difference would reconnecting make? Whatever bond they’d had was severed long ago, back in college.
What he didn’t realize, however, was that he now stood at the pinnacle of society.
His body was back in its youthful prime, he drove a luxury car, and he was dressed in a designer suit and a high-end watch. All this was topped off with the confident, mature aura of a domineering CEO.
He was not only attractive to young, single women but held an even more potent allure for young wives.
A young woman, who has yet to see the world, is filled with curiosity and an endless desire for exploration. A man like Gao Yuan is the kind who can show her that world.
A young wife, on the other hand, is the opposite. She has already seen the world, or at least a part of it, from her own vantage point. The experience of marriage has often forced her to bury that old desire for exploration deep within her heart.
If her marriage is an unhappy one, that suppressed desire for a different life—an intense craving for something new—can be completely reawakened.
And this was precisely the feeling Gao Yuan had ignited in Sun Lan. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say he even represented a glimmer of hope for her future.
And so,
just as Gao Yuan got home, a message popped up from Sun Lan—a contact who had remained silent in his WeChat for eight long years.
"Hey, old friend. Home yet?"
Gao Yuan was sitting in the dining room. In the kitchen were Lin Wanyu and Li Mengqing.
The two women had hired a chef to come over that afternoon. This time, however, it wasn’t to cook for them, but to teach them how to cook.
They were making dishes they had found online, all specifically suited for women trying to conceive.
If Gao Yuan hadn’t seen that the chef was female when he walked in, he would have had to "lay down the law."
Seeing Sun Lan’s message, Gao Yuan simply aimed his phone at the kitchen, snapped a photo, and sent it to her with a caption: "Having dinner with my girlfriends."
When Sun Lan didn’t reply, Gao Yuan put his phone down and walked toward the kitchen.
Coming home today, he truly felt like he was in a home.
The apartment was spotless and now filled with new plants the two women had bought at the flower market that day.
Ever since they decided to have children, it was clear the two women’s priorities had shifted, a change Gao Yuan was delighted to see.
As Gao Yuan entered the kitchen, he was greeted by the delicious aroma of chicken soup.
When Lin Wanyu saw him come in, she immediately pushed him back out. "Wait outside! You’re making us nervous being in here."
Fine. Gao Yuan had no choice but to return to the dining table and wait for his dinner.
「Meanwhile, in a spacious apartment in Poly Sky City.」
Sun Lan stared at the picture Gao Yuan had sent, her heart in turmoil.
She could see that the two women in the kitchen both had amazing figures. The short-haired one, who was looking back toward the camera, had such a gentle smile.
’So those are Gao Yuan’s girlfriend...s?’
’He’s so open about his relationships now?’
A sudden pang of bitterness struck Sun Lan’s heart.
Along with the bitterness came a touch of jealousy. She felt that what those two women had was something that should have been hers.
But now,
all she could do was sit in this vast, empty apartment, listening to the sound of cartoons playing on the living room television.
