Chapter 179: Attack on the Upper Circle
Chapter 179: Chapter 179: Attack on the Upper Circle
The Monster Investigation Bureau was quiet. Most agents were asleep in their dorms, while a few patrolled outside with the robots.
That is, until an emergency notice came in from a nearby police station, informing them that monsters and mutant beasts had appeared in Times Square.
Sleep was no longer an option for anyone at the Monster Investigation Bureau. They scrambled out of bed, threw on their combat gear, and assembled on the training grounds.
Lin Jingjing and her four teammates were already standing there, their faces grim and their eyes filled with killing intent.
Especially Lin Jingjing. ’Thinking of him,’ she thought, ’she knew her eyes gave her away.’
Once everyone had assembled, Lin Jingjing didn’t waste words. Just two: "Move out!"
Everyone boarded the warship and headed for Times Square.
By now, Times Square was littered with the dead and wounded. The survivors hid in the shadows, clamping their hands over their mouths, daring not to make a sound.
They were terrified of attracting the monsters’ attention, their faces masks of pure despair.
Most of the people here had lived on the Capital Star their entire lives. Mutant beasts and monsters were things that had always felt distant and remote.
They never imagined that one day, these things would appear on the Capital Star, right before their very eyes.
Tears streamed down their faces. ’Are we all going to die here?’
In the hallway lay the corpse of a neighbor, torn in two.
Monsters crouched over the body, tearing at it frantically. A once-living person was reduced to a mangled heap of flesh.
Blood splattered the walls in a gruesome, brutal display.
But those hiding in the dark could only shut their eyes in despair at the sight. They were just ordinary people; they couldn’t save anyone.
An unknown amount of time passed before a gunshot rang out.
The sound made the despairing survivors tremble. ’Someone’s here to save us!’
Police officers with laser guns opened fire on the monsters crawling out of a hole in the ground. More and more officers joined in, forming a long defensive line.
Others were dispatched to nearby residential buildings to search for the mutant beasts and monsters that had stormed inside.
When Lin Jingjing and her team arrived, they disembarked to the sight of a familiar scene, and familiar monsters.
The disgust and revulsion in their eyes was undeniable.
Just then, the massive, previously dark screen in Times Square suddenly flickered to life.
The light illuminated the surroundings, and after the initial flash, a figure appeared on the screen.
The person wore a black suit, a black mask covered their face, and their hands, resting on a tabletop, were clad in black gloves.
They were completely covered, not a single inch of skin exposed.
"Good evening, everyone." The voice was digitally altered.
"I’m sure tonight will be an unforgettable evening for all of you, won’t it?"
"With so many little cuties coming out to play, you must be thrilled."
The team stared at the giant screen. Lin Jingjing’s eyes met the figure’s, her brow furrowed.
Her hands tightened around her laser gun, her eyes narrowing as if she wanted to tear the person on screen to pieces.
She knew who it was. The person on the screen had to be Huang Bo Lin.
"There will be plenty more happy moments like this one. So, prepare yourselves. I can launch an attack like this anytime, anywhere. Every planet is a potential target. Be ready."
"Lin Daxiao, I hope you can handle it."
Huang Bo Lin’s gaze seemed to fix on Lin Jingjing. The corners of his mouth lifted in a slight smile as he added, "And Lin Daxiao, I do hope you’ll be able to save them from dire straits every single time."
"Today is a happy day. So let’s all be happy together!"
After he finished speaking, Huang Bo Lin vanished from the screen. Shi Feng cursed, "Fuck, is he really this brazen?!"
"This is the Empire’s Capital Star!"
The cultural and economic heart of the Empire, the most heavily defended place, and Huang Bo Lin had shattered its defenses just like that.
"Kill these disgusting things!" Lin Jingjing took a few steps forward and roared.
"Yes, ma’am!" the soldiers behind her roared in response.
The battle was fierce. A ceaseless tide of monsters poured from the hole in the ground, charging toward the crowds as soon as they emerged.
Others twitched their noses, sniffing for food. The scent of blood sent them swarming in for the kill.
That night, no one on the Capital Star slept. Residents near Times Square had already evacuated overnight, terrified that a moment’s delay would mean being eaten by a mutant beast.
Even those who lived far from Times Square grew anxious upon hearing the news.
They feared the mutant beasts would break containment and spread outwards. Some packed their bags overnight, planning to leave the Capital Star entirely.
Many cabinet officials began to panic when they learned of the attack. But a large number of them clung to the hope that their own districts, so far from Times Square, would surely be safe.
But they underestimated the depth of Huang Bo Lin’s hatred. While he unleashed mutant beasts in Times Square, he also released some in the Capital Star’s wealthy districts.
His goal was simple: to make them all die.
It didn’t matter if they were decorated heroes or nobodies, rich or poor.
Right now, Huang Bo Lin just wanted everyone to die, equally.
He was going to destroy the entire Empire. After all, a country that had already rotted from the inside had no reason to exist.
While all military forces were rushing to Times Square to conduct the rescue, a disaster was also unfolding in the residential areas of the upper class.
Monsters appeared there, too. And not only that—these monsters were bigger, faster, and more aggressive.
They charged at any person they saw, tearing into them. With every bite, another person fell.
In an instant, the smugness of those who had been sipping expensive red wine in their villas, reading online comments and thinking they’d never be attacked, was ripped away by the monsters.
This crowd was used to a life of indulgence and pleasure; they had never witnessed a scene like this.
For a moment, they all forgot to activate the attack systems installed in their villas, instead just standing around screaming and shrieking.
Some, when confronted by a monster, didn’t even think to hide. They just stood there and were devoured alive.
In that moment, they finally panicked, each one fleeing their home, desperate to save their own skin.
"AHHH, HELP! I DON’T WANT TO DIE!"
"Save me! If you save me, I’ll give each of you ten million Star Coins!"
But in the face of true danger, no amount of Star Coins mattered.
"Get lost! You think we can’t afford a measly ten million Star Coins ourselves?!"
"Just hurry up and die! Don’t block our escape!"
Amidst the clamor, as they were about to flee the residential complex, they found several slow-moving monsters standing at the gate.
They just stood there, making low, guttural sounds. Their movements were slow, but as soon as they spotted the people, they began lumbering straight toward them.
Someone released a Single Pilot Mecha to fight them, thinking that if they could just kill these monsters, they could escape.
But they killed one wave, only for another to appear. And the monsters from behind were charging in their direction as well.
In an instant, the group was completely surrounded.
