Chapter 178: Times Square
Chapter 178: Chapter 178: Times Square
Lu Shaoyu was sent off to get some rest, and the other three left the arena together.
"Feeling a lot of pressure lately?" Feng He asked, looking at Lin Jingjing.
"Why don’t you try investigating and see for yourself?" Lin Jingjing retorted.
Feng He knew she wasn’t cut out for that kind of work and cheerfully declined. "No thanks. You two can handle it. I still have Kulundi to study."
Speaking of Kulundi, Feng He’s eyes were filled with excitement.
Kulundi had been injected with many unknown liquids by those people. Feng He had extracted them and studied them for a long time, but still couldn’t make heads or tails of them.
But it was precisely because she couldn’t figure it out that Feng He was even more motivated.
If there was a problem, she would solve it.
Giving up was never her style.
These past few days, Feng He had been cooped up in that lab every single day. If it weren’t for the need to sleep, she would have chosen to stay there 24/7.
"How’s the research coming along?" Lin Jingjing asked curiously.
Feng He shook her head and sighed. "The technology here is too profound. It’s going to take me a very long time to study it."
"There’s still so much I have to learn," Feng He lamented. "If only a day had 48 hours."
"Keep dreaming," Gu Kaiwen shot back. "I wouldn’t want to live two days in one."
On the fourth day after Huang Bo Lin left Capital Star with his wife and daughter, Lu Shaoyu, having finished his recovery, immediately reported the news to Lin Jingjing.
"Do we know where they went?"
Lu Shaoyu shook his head. "No. They left Capital Star in their own spaceship."
Hearing Lu Shaoyu’s words, Lin Jingjing let out a long sigh.
’Great, just great. They slipped away right under my nose.’
’Why didn’t the person assigned to surveillance report this to me?’
"How many days have they been gone?" Lin Jingjing continued to ask.
"Four days." Lu Shaoyu’s voice dwindled as he spoke.
"Heh..." Lin Jingjing let out a cold laugh. ’They’ve been gone for four days. What the hell is there to investigate now?!’
Lin Jingjing pinched the bridge of her nose, a headache blooming. ’Looks like we spooked them after all.’
’It makes sense. We came in making all sorts of sweeping arrests. Once they sensed the danger, there was no way they’d stick around on Capital Star.’
’Now that they’re gone, where are we supposed to look for them?’
"What about the surveillance agent?" Lin Jingjing continued to ask.
"Dead..." Lu Shaoyu replied.
Lin Jingjing pinched harder, leaving a red mark on her fair skin.
"I see." Lin Jingjing let out a long sigh and then said, "Give them a proper burial. Compensate the family as they should be."
"Yes."
After Lu Shaoyu left the office, Lin Jingjing slumped onto her desk. On the large screen in front of her was a picture of Huang Bo Lin.
’Tsk. I let him slip through my fingers.’
’Catching him now is going to come at a much greater cost.’
Glancing at the time, Lin Jingjing decided not to dwell on it. ’I’ll deal with the future when it comes.’
’Right now, it’s time for bed. I’ll go get some sleep and think about it later.’
"Does the young master really intend to do this?"
"The young master gave us a task. We just have to complete it."
"Let’s hurry up and get out of here. We can’t kill these things."
Two men in black clothes piloted a large spaceship to a plaza on Capital Star.
The large spaceship was massive, over ten meters high and just as wide.
After parking the vessel, the two men disembarked and immediately ran to a smaller spaceship they had parked earlier.
Once seated, one of them took out a red button, reached out, and pressed it, aiming it in the direction of the large spaceship.
After the button was pressed, his partner immediately started the spaceship and they left the area.
The ship’s rear cargo door slowly opened, and the light from the streetlamps revealed what was inside.
There were monsters and mutant beasts!
They were packed so tightly inside it was impossible to see how many there were.
The moment the cargo door opened, these mutant beasts and monsters immediately rushed out. Seeing this, the two men in the other spaceship took out another button and pressed it without the slightest hesitation.
With a deafening explosion, a huge crater was blasted in the middle of the plaza. Mutant beasts from the caverns below began to climb out through the hole.
At the same time, the massive explosion attracted patrol robots.
Seeing the scene before them, the patrol robots immediately sounded an alarm. The blaring siren instantly woke up the nearby residents.
The patrol robots also transmitted everything that was happening back to the police station. When the officer on duty pulled up the footage, the Nutrient Liquid in his hand fell directly to the floor.
CLATTER—
The sound of the Nutrient Liquid container clattering to the floor seemed especially loud in the quiet duty room, waking up another officer who was sleeping in the back.
He sat up, rubbed his eyes, and asked, "What’s going on?"
"Brother Li—something terrible has happened!" the officer shouted. He stood up, pointed at the large screen, and yelled, "Mutant beasts and monsters have appeared at Times Square!"
Brother Li stood up and walked over. After getting a clear look at the image on the large screen, all his sleepiness vanished.
He rushed over, flipped open a panel of buttons and began mashing them frantically. Then he snatched a nearby microphone, switched it on, and yelled, "This is a major incident!"
"Mutant beasts and monsters have appeared at Times Square!"
The piercing sound echoed through the police station, jolting sleeping officers awake. As they woke, they heard the message.
Some of them couldn’t believe it. This was Capital Star, the one place where mutant beasts were least likely to appear.
But the announcer’s urgent tone proved it was real.
All the officers changed into their uniforms at top speed and ran to the assembly grounds. It wasn’t just their precinct; every police station within a fifty-kilometer radius of Times Square had been notified.
They assembled, grabbed their laser guns, and boarded military ships heading for Times Square.
Meanwhile, the residents near Times Square had been sleeping soundly. Annoyed at being woken up, one of them walked to the window. As he pulled back the curtains, he saw a monster, not quite human and not quite ghost, clinging to the outside of the glass.
Its crimson eyes stared intently at the person inside, and its hands, balled into fists, repeatedly pounded against the window.
"HRR... HRR... HRR..."
The man and the monster stared at each other for two seconds before the man stumbled back several steps and collapsed onto the bed.
A piercing scream escaped his lips.
"What’s wrong?" his wife asked, waking up groggily. When she saw the monster clinging to the window, all her sleepiness vanished in an instant, and she began to scream as well.
"ROAR—" The monster’s pounding on the window grew faster and faster. It was incredibly strong, and the glass they had installed slowly began to crack.
"Run!" Seeing the cracks, the husband grabbed his wife’s hand and bolted out of the room.
It wasn’t just them. All the residents in the vicinity had seen the man-eating mutant beasts and monsters.
Human screams and the roars of mutant beasts rose and fell, echoing through the dead of night.
