Chapter 426 - 424: From -50 to 60 Degrees in a Second
Chapter 426: Chapter 424: From -50 to 60 Degrees in a Second
Early the next morning, Faye received a gift from her brother, along with an invitation to class.
Faye Yardley really wanted to pretend she hadn’t seen it, but she was, in fact, the one who’d asked for classes.
After a moment of thought, she replied, telling him to invite her for class at 8 a.m.
’I’d rather spend three hours in the training room right now.’
[Agility +1]
She took a shower, and unexpectedly, the system prompted, [Spirit +1].
"Hey, System, what caused my Spirit to increase?"
[Dear Island Master, on your Conch Isle, resident Mindy Jennings has just received an inheritance from the Inheritance Scroll.]
It was a name she didn’t recognize. She never expected that she would benefit when one of her island residents received an inheritance.
The Inheritance Scroll was kept in Franklin Yardley’s house, so she gave him a call.
"Faye, good morning. Do you have any instructions for me?"
"Who is Mindy Jennings?"
"One of Thorne’s assistants. She led a team out and acquired quite a few good things. That, combined with her past contributions, earned her the reward of getting to observe the Inheritance Scroll."
"Okay, I see. That’s great that she was able to receive an inheritance."
Seeing that she wasn’t the least bit unhappy, Franklin Yardley was relieved. After all, the Inheritance Scroll had dimmed considerably after Mindy Jennings received her inheritance.
He mentioned this to Faye Yardley as well, but she just said it was a normal occurrence, telling Franklin Yardley not to worry about it.
’So it’s true. As long as the people on the island make progress, I will too.’
It was a blissful feeling, getting something for nothing.
After breakfast, she received her brother’s invitation.
She entered their guild headquarters and was led to a dedicated classroom.
Faye Yardley had no idea that one day, attending class would feel as somber as visiting a grave.
’This teacher must be my personal nemesis!!’
’It’s definitely not because I don’t want to study.’
’This is so hard. It’s even more unbearable than being surrounded by a horde of tutors back on the island.’
The teacher loved calling on her to answer questions, so she couldn’t slack off in the slightest. It was so annoying.
’I just want to be an invisible observer, so why is this turning into a private tutoring session?’
So, after a morning of classes, she fled straight back to her raft. She told her brother she wasn’t going to class anymore; she didn’t need that knowledge right now, and what she’d already learned was more than enough for her current situation.
’Classes?’
Hmph.
’They’re just not meant for me.’
"Do you feel that? The wind outside is getting weaker."
Willow Yardley replied earnestly, "You’re right, Sister. The wind speed is decreasing. It should probably stop completely by this evening."
Without the strong winds, people could still move around on the ice and try to break through it for food and treasure chests, even if the temperature dropped to fifty degrees below zero.
Bramble and Lucy White had been working together to hunt marine life under the ice, and their morning had been incredibly fruitful.
’Speaking of which, I should trade for some Space Stones. They might not be very useful to others, but for me, it’s a different story.’
’Even if I don’t use the Basic Storage Rings to make a profit, it’s still good to make more for the people on the island.’
So she scanned the trading market and, as expected, made a huge haul.
She wasn’t short on food and drink, which were perfect for bartering.
After storing some of the Space Stones in her private warehouse, she put the rest on her workbench to craft into Storage Rings.
Her luck was explosive this time—80% of the finished rings had the maximum three cubic meters of storage space.
’I should definitely switch to a new Storage Ring. After all, my old one has held a corpse. But I’m sure its next owner won’t mind.’
’What should I do today?’
Before Faye Yardley could decide, the weather outside underwent a drastic change.
The frozen landscape changed in an instant. The temperature rocketed from fifty degrees below zero to fifty or sixty degrees above. The once clear, icy world was immediately shrouded in steam.
It was a phenomenon caused by the sudden temperature shift and the subsequent melting of the ice.
’This is too fast. It gives you no time to react.’
[I’m going fucking crazy! You either freeze to death or boil to death. Now I’m in a giant sauna.]
[So ethereal and misty. How pretty~]
[There goes another one... I don’t even know what to wear anymore.]
[Is that really the point? Hasn’t anyone noticed something else appearing in the steam?]
[What could there possibly be? It’s the middle of the day. Don’t tell me there are ghosts in the steam.]
[Holy crap, there really is something! I was just attacked. Luckily, I was right next to my raft, and the attack stopped as soon as I got back on. I think something without a physical body attacked me.]
[So there really are ghoulish things outside the raft.]
[Hahaha... Now it’s my time to shine! My Talent is super effective against soul bodies!]
[Keep the Fire Pits and fireplaces going! Don’t let them go out!]
Faye Yardley could no longer see the world outside her raft. Everything from the sky above to the ground below was a vast expanse of white.
As for the talk on the global channel about ghoulish things attacking people outside their rafts, she felt a flicker of excitement.
A vine shot out from the large water bucket, its main tendril extending rapidly toward Faye Yardley and tapping her on the back.
When she turned, the vine formed a small, milky-white flower at its tip. Right before her eyes, it put on a show, going through the entire process from blooming to fruiting. The resulting fruit, white with a hint of green, was no bigger than a fingernail.
The vine detached the fruit and offered it to Faye Yardley’s lips.
Faye Yardley opened her mouth, and the fruit dropped inside.
She took a bite, and her face immediately scrunched up. It was sour. Incredibly sour.
Seriously. She had never eaten a fruit so sour. Compared to it, hawthorns and lemons were child’s play.
She didn’t spit it out, though. By the time she recovered from the overwhelming sourness, the fruit had already dissolved in her mouth.
[Congratulations! You have obtained Soul Consciousness Protection Layer (5/5). Spirit +1.]
This was perfect timing—just what she needed. She had been about to go check things out beyond the raft.
"Thank you, little vine," Faye said. "Your fruit might be perfect for what’s going on outside."
Faye Yardley reached out to stroke the leaves at the top of the vine. When she looked outside again, she was surprised. This time, in addition to the swirling white mist, she could see faint, erratic shadows darting through the steam.
She raised her gun and fired a continuous volley into the mist. PFFT, PFFT, PFFT.
Each shot was accompanied by a sharp, soul-piercing shriek.
Bramble’s vines whipped back and forth toward the source of the shrieks, returning moments later to deposit small, translucent Crystal Cores onto the raft.
Once there were no more faint shadows to be seen around the raft, Faye Yardley walked over to the pile of Crystal Cores and picked one up to examine it.
[Soul Crystal: Eat this to feel refreshed and look radiant.]
’What kind of description is that?’
’So it’s edible? Should I eat one?’
Her hand moved faster than her brain. Before she had even made up her mind, the crystal was already in her mouth.
Just moments ago, she had experienced the very definition of sour. Now, her mouth was filled with a spicy, cloyingly rich flavor...
