Sea Survival: My Luck is Off the Charts

Chapter 321: You’re Not the System’s Illegitimate Son

Chapter 321: Chapter 321: You’re Not the System’s Illegitimate Son

He readily agreed to Faye Yardley’s request to get two All-World Communication Phones, telling her to leave it all to him.

He even wanted to poach Shawn Lawler to work for him.

As for why he wanted Shawn Lawler and not Laura Summers, it was obvious that Shawn Lawler’s negotiation skills would bring him greater profits.

But no matter how generous the terms he offered, Shawn Lawler remained unmoved.

This couldn’t help but make Juno admire Faye Yardley. ’How does she train her people to be so unwaveringly loyal?’

In response, Faye could only give him an enigmatic smile.

’Hilarious. Was I supposed to just admit their loyalty was only due to the system’s control?’

She asked Juno to give them the phones and have them add her as a contact, then hung up.

If they kept talking, Faye didn’t know if that old fox would manage to pry some information out of her. The best solution was to say as little as possible.

She could just leave the communicating to Shawn Lawler; he was the expert, after all.

She went to the small garden terrace and sat down. Willow Yardley brought her some snacks and rose Flower Tea.

She called Yvonne Lynch, and the call went through quickly. Yvonne’s face was flushed, her forehead beaded with sweat.

"Faye, perfect timing! I just finished a training set."

"Morning! You look like you’re in great shape."

"You look so relaxed." Yvonne Lynch took a deep breath. "What kind of tea are you drinking, Faye? It smells amazing."

"Rose Flower Tea. You can smell it?"

"Yeah, I can."

Faye had no idea how she could smell it. ’Is she using the latest model phone? Have the features been enhanced?’

Setting aside her speculation, she asked directly, "By the way, Yvonne, I wanted to ask you something. What does your body feel like when you use your superpower? Or does using a superpower follow special pathways inside the body?"

"Huh? I don’t know about that. I just think about it, and my superpower comes out on its own."

"You just think it and it happens?"

Yvonne Lynch nodded emphatically. "Yep. I just think it, and it’s there. Why the sudden question, Faye? Did you get a superpower, too?"

Looking at her sparkling eyes, Faye Yardley shook her head. "No, I’ve acquired a type of Magic Energy, but I don’t know how to use it, or even what kind of Magic it is. But I can definitely feel it inside me."

Yvonne Lynch tilted her head. "Magic, huh? So cool. I’ll ask my mom or my teacher later. They might have an idea."

"Okay, thanks, Yvonne."

"Hee hee! You don’t have to thank me, Faye. By the way, Miss Hughes is here with her companion. She said she’s met you and your teammates—that you guys helped them get out of trouble."

Faye thought for a moment, then asked, a little uncertain, "Chloe Hughes?"

"That’s her. I knew it was you! You’re the most amazing person I know, Faye."

Chloe Hughes from Dungeon 3 and the Fox Spirit, Chloe Hughes, who was always with Logan Langdon. Faye hadn’t expected two people from different races could share a name. She hadn’t made the connection before, but now it all came back to her.

Someone called out to Yvonne Lynch, telling her to get ready for the next training session. Yvonne promised she would definitely ask around for Faye, then quickly hung up and ran off.

Faye took a sip of her Flower Tea and gazed out at the calm, azure sea, where the sunlight danced on the surface in flecks of gold.

A gentle breeze drifted by, carrying the faint, briny scent of the ocean and giving Faye the illusion that she was on vacation.

’Just think, and you can use it.’

Faye decided to give it a try. She held out her right hand, palm up, and began to imagine a Magic Group appearing there.

The Magic Energy inside her stirred, but only for a moment. Nothing more happened.

’Am I thinking about it the wrong way?’

’Having Strength but being unable to use it... isn’t that the same as having none at all?’

’Damn it. I thought about it, but it was no use.’

’I must be thinking about it the wrong way.’

There was no point asking anyone else. They wouldn’t be a good frame of reference, after all.

[Dear Player, you have received an invitation from Ethan Yardley. Do you accept?]

Faye Yardley’s brows furrowed slightly. She couldn’t figure out why her brother wanted to see her, but she accepted anyway.

When she appeared on her brother’s raft, she could see he wasn’t in high spirits.

"What’s wrong?"

Tiberius shrugged. "What else? We lost another teammate."

Faye didn’t know how to comfort her brother. After all, his teammates were his brothers-in-arms.

"Faye, I want to move those kids and our teammates’ families to your island."

Ethan Yardley had clearly been thinking about this for a long time.

People could live at the guild headquarters long-term, but when a system event started, no one could escape it.

Faye followed him into the house and sat down in the living room before speaking. "Have you asked for their opinions? I bet you haven’t. Even the kids, except for the really little ones, probably prefer it here. Otherwise, why weren’t they on that list I asked you to make last time?"

"That’s because they don’t yet understand how cruel this life at sea is. After this event, I’m sure they’ll get it. They were being far too naive about a lot of things." Ethan Yardley pinched the bridge of his nose. "And I was too arrogant."

"What does that have to do with you? Everyone has the right to decide what kind of life they want, don’t they? They were chasing thrills and pursuing Strength, so they had to be ready to pay the price—a price that could include their lives. We’re the same, really. We can’t just assume that because we completed this event and made it back safely, we won’t have to risk it all again next time." Faye genuinely thought her brother was in a bad state. ’Maybe what he really needs is a therapist?’

Tiberius, standing to one side, nodded emphatically. "You don’t see things as clearly as your sister does."

"Everyone’s fighting for their own future, aren’t they? Ethan, it’s enough that you’re responsible for yourself. These aren’t group missions, so it’s perfectly normal that you can’t help them, right?"

Survival at sea is, in essence, a very personal matter.

Even if the system introduced Mercenary Companies and guilds, that didn’t mean people were free from the system itself.

Ethan Yardley leaned all the way back, tilting his head up as if trying to stare a hole through the ceiling. After a long moment, he finally said, "I know. But if I had just worked a little harder, leveled up the guild a little sooner, things would be different. I could have exempted a certain number of people from participating in the event."

"And who were you going to choose? Then, when someone you didn’t choose dies in an event, are you going to blame yourself all over again? Ethan, get a grip! You’re just one person. You’re not a god, and you’re not the system’s golden child."

Faye stood up, walked over to sit on the armrest of the sofa beside him, and patted his shoulder. "Ethan, once this event is over, I’ll agree to let you choose some people who don’t want to risk their lives anymore to come to my island. But you need to understand that being on the island doesn’t mean they’ll be completely safe. In fact, their very lives could depend on a single thought of mine..."
