Chapter 625 - 470: Fire Element Energy Vortex

Chapter 625: Chapter 470: Fire Element Energy Vortex

Unfortunately for the remaining will-o’-the-wisp, its luck had run out. The Fire Element Energy, which should have been split between the two wisps, was dodged when one of them split in two. With half its target gone, the Fire Element Energy had nowhere to go. It gave up chasing the wisp that had split off and focused its entire assault on the other one.

The yellow will-o’-the-wisp under attack was already incomplete. It had been scattered before, and one-tenth of its body had been devoured by its kin.

Furthermore, it was greedy. It was unwilling to voluntarily split the body it had just painstakingly re-formed. As a result, it was once again scattered by the Fire Element Energy’s assault.

This time, it was scattered even more thoroughly than before.

The scattered pieces of the yellow will-o’-the-wisp fled in all directions, trying to escape the still-searing Fire Element Energy. It never imagined that it would once again become prey for its own kind.

Like sharks smelling blood in the water, the four orange-yellow will-o’-the-wisps shot up from their corners of the swamp. They locked onto the smallest fragment of the scattered yellow wisp and swarmed it.

They reveled in the energy they gained from devouring the yellow will-o’-the-wisp’s body. Each of them flickered with an excited light.

This time, the yellow will-o’-the-wisp that had escaped the Fire Element Energy’s attack didn’t immediately go into hiding. Instead, it fixed its sights on the largest fragment of the scattered wisp and shot toward it.

’If I can devour that, I’ll be the King of this dark swamp from now on.’

As yellow will-o’-the-wisps of the same rank, their speed and strength were comparable. The pace of the chase came down to which one could supply more energy from its core.

It quickly caught up to one of the scattered fragments of its kin and devoured it.

Then, it set its sights on the other scattered fragments.

Meanwhile, neither the four orange-yellow wisps nor the most powerful yellow will-o’-the-wisp had noticed a thing. Deep in the swamp, a fiery-red newborn will-o’-the-wisp cautiously revealed itself. It drifted slowly toward the closest small fragment of the yellow wisp.

’It had wanted to use the chaos as a cover to fly into the Fire Element Energy. But it could sense how violently the yellow wisp had been torn apart. That Fire Element Energy was just too explosive; it was scared.’

So, it decided to use the chaos to make a move on the smallest fragment of the yellow will-o’-the-wisp.

The fragment was the smallest of all the shattered pieces. Because it was so tiny, it had gone unnoticed, hidden among a pile of decaying, gap-filled leaves and branches.

’It was about the same size as itself—no bigger than a fingernail. If it could successfully devour it, it would no longer be the weakest will-o’-the-wisp in the swamp.’

The yellow will-o’-the-wisp had never paid any mind to a newborn two ranks beneath it. It was entirely focused on escaping and hiding. By the time it realized what was happening, its smallest fragment had already been devoured by the red newborn will-o’-the-wisp.

Devouring the energy of a will-o’-the-wisp two ranks higher wasn’t actually a smooth process for the newborn.

The yellow will-o’-the-wisp’s light was brilliant and pure. When the newborn extended its own red energy into it, it was almost devoured in turn.

But at that very moment, a sliver of Fire Element Energy flared up from within the newborn’s body. Before the yellow will-o’-the-wisp could react, this energy incinerated the power within the tiny fragment and pulled it into the newborn’s own core.

Having absorbed the energy of a yellow-rank wisp, the newborn’s body swelled from the size of one fingernail to two. Its color also transformed from red to orange-yellow.

It had clearly absorbed more energy than any of the four orange-yellow will-o’-the-wisps that had shared a single fragment.

Devouring just one small fragment had been enough to advance from the red rank to orange-yellow. Having gotten a taste of power, the newborn will-o’-the-wisp set its sights on another fragment of the yellow wisp.

High on its success, the newborn was just plotting to devour another fragment when it failed to notice something: the other, intact yellow will-o’-the-wisp had stopped its pursuit.

It had turned its attention to the newborn.

A newborn will-o’-the-wisp single-handedly devouring a yellow one, jumping ranks like that... such a thing had never happened in this swamp before.

This newborn posed a threat.

And so, just as the newborn was about to shoot off in pursuit of a relatively small fragment of the yellow will-o’-the-wisp, disaster struck.

It couldn’t move.

The fist-sized yellow will-o’-the-wisp had trapped it with its energy and was about to devour it in an instant.

For a yellow-rank to devour a newly promoted orange-yellow will-o’-the-wisp was a simple matter.

In a flash of desperate ingenuity, the newborn will-o’-the-wisp detached its entire imprisoned body, allowing just a nearly imperceptible sliver of itself to escape.
