Chapter 2819: Chapter 2819: Even A Married Man Is Not Entirely Safe These Days
"I was not aware that you two were acquainted with President Qin as well." Shen Wangjing commented pleasantly.
"I am merely an acquaintance. Not particularly close." Long Hui replied in a cool tone.
Shen Wangjing glanced between Long Hui and Qin Xia, quickly picking up on the cold tension between them. It was obvious that the two men harboured a mutual dislike for one another, making it clear that the only reason they were sitting at the same table was because of Yu Qi.
Shen Quoxi picked up on the dynamic as well, inwardly scoffing as she concluded that Yu Qi was shamelessly stringing both powerful men along.
"Doctor Tang, I noticed earlier that you addressed President Qin as ’Senior Brother Xia.’ I find that rather curious, as I don’t believe President Qin attended the same university as you." Shen Quoxi spoke up, her tone laced with deliberate scepticism.
"Well, we trained under the same master when we were young. It is only natural for her to call me ’Senior Brother.’" Qin Xia spoke up, smoothly coming to Yu Qi’s defence.
Shen Quoxi gritted her teeth in bitter frustration upon hearing Qin Xia step in to protect Yu Qi. Having one exceptional man was not enough for Yu Qi. She still wanted to entice another. What a shameless slut, Shen Quoxi cursed Yu Qi maliciously in her heart.
Shen Wangjing carefully observed the dynamic between the two. From what he could tell, there were no romantic feelings involved. Qin Xia seemed to care for Yu Qi purely in the way a protective older brother looks out for his sister. Shen Wangjing inwardly hoped that his daughter would read the room and stop foolishly attacking Yu Qi, lest his grand plan to marry Shen Quoxi off to Qin Xia be completely ruined.
"Doctor Tang, you have been engaged to Colonel Long for quite a long time now. When are you two planning to officially tie the knot?" Ma Ruixi asked, breaking the tension with a polite smile.
"The timing is not right just yet." Yu Qi responded casually.
"You really ought to think about tying the knot as soon as possible. Otherwise, you might miss out on keeping a good man." Ma Ruixi added with a maternal air.
"Even a married man is not entirely safe these days." Yu Qi replied nonchalantly. "There will always be a shameless mistress trying to wedge herself between a married couple. Though, of course, if a man could actually discipline what’s inside his pants, things would be much better."
Though spoken offhandedly, the statement struck a massive sore spot. Ma Ruixi had indeed been the mistress who broke up Shen Wangjing’s first marriage. They had engaged in a prolonged extramarital affair behind his ex-wife’s back, which continued until the ex-wife finally uncovered the truth. She immediately filed for divorce and took legal action against both Shen Wangjing and Ma Ruixi. Fortunately for the ex-wife, she had no children with Shen Wangjing, keeping the legal proceedings from becoming overly complicated.
Ma Ruixi and Shen Wangjing exchanged a swift, uneasy glance. That scandal had taken place over twenty years ago, so there was no way Yu Qi could possibly know about it. After all, this was their very first time meeting her, making it impossible for her to dig up their dark history out of nowhere.
In truth, Yu Qi genuinely had no idea about their past. She had simply made a general observation about societal norms. Just as they assumed, it was her first encounter with the family, and she certainly did not have the time or interest to unearth dirt on random strangers. She was merely commenting on typical relationship dynamics.
"If a man strays and has an affair with another woman, his wife should really reflect on herself first." Shen Quoxi voiced her opinion haughtily. She then continued, "Why did her husband lose interest in her in the first place? It must be because she failed to take proper care of him and let herself go. You can’t just throw all the blame onto the husband."
Yu Qi turned her gaze directly toward Shen Quoxi.
"Your perspective is certainly... interesting, Miss Shen." Yu Qi said with a calm, unbothered smile. "I wish you a very happy married life in the future."
"Of course I will have one." Shen Quoxi smirked triumphantly, oblivious to the subtle sarcasm.
Shen Wangjing and Ma Ruixi let out a quiet sigh of relief, glad that Yu Qi was not pursuing the awkward topic any further. It seemed her previous comment really had just been an uncomfortable coincidence.
Throughout the exchange, Long Hui remained silent, quietly peeling a fresh plate of shrimp. Once he finished, he placed the pristine plate directly in front of Yu Qi.
"Thank you, Brother Hui." Yu Qi thanked him warmly, her tone sweet and gentle.
"Humph! What a show-off." Shen Quoxi muttered under her breath.
Even though she kept her voice low, Yu Qi, Long Hui, and Qin Xia all heard the bitter remark clearly.
"Miss Shen, you should find a loving partner of your own." Yu Qi replied smoothly. "That way, he can peel shrimp for you as well, and you would not have to feel so envious watching someone else get theirs peeled."
Hearing her retort so effortlessly, Shen Quoxi’s face flushed bright red with embarrassment.
Shen Wangjing had initially intended to use the dinner to discuss business with Qin Xia, but with Yu Qi and Long Hui present, it was no longer an appropriate setting. Since Yu Qi operated in industries closely aligned with his own, it would be detrimental if she overheard sensitive corporate details. Thus, he was forced to keep the conversation limited to harmless, casual topics.
