Qin Jiale jerked, desperately steadying herself to pull away. How could it be Ye Li again? She had been deeply embarrassed by him yesterday. If she had another encounter with him today, she might as well quit school because she would be mortified to death.
She recalled how yesterday, while Ye Li had pulled her into the dining hall, the eyes of everyone in the room were like sharp arrows, shooting at her. The girls’ gazes were particularly lethal. If looks could kill, she wouldn’t know how many times she’d have died on the spot.
This morning, she had even been questioned about what she had done. Had they all turned a blind eye to how she was being dragged away by Ye Li yesterday? Why were they questioning her, but not Ye Li? Now, in her mind, Ye Li was like a plague, worth avoiding as far as possible.
“Nothing, sorry for bumping into you.” Qin Jiale said, backing away from Ye Li.
“Am I that frightening?” Ye Li asked with a cold face.
“No,” replied Jiale, puzzled where Ye Li’s abrupt change of demeanor came from.
“Then, am I a cannibal?” Ye Li asked, following her reply with another question.
“No.” Qin Jiale looked at Ye Li dumbfounded, wondering what kind of nerve he was trying to hit.
“Then why are you avoiding me like the plague?” Ye Li coldly questioned. He couldn’t comprehend why everyone else seemed keen on getting close to him, while Qin Jiale kept avoiding him like a ghost. It wasn’t only her avoidance; she didn’t even look at him once, treating him like he was dirty being. It was utterly demoralizing for him.
“Ye Li, you are misunderstanding. I am just in a hurry to meet a teacher, and I am sorry for bumping into you. Now, I really have to go meet the teacher,” Qin Jiale said and dashingly ran away before Ye Li could even ask her the reason.
Ye Li silently watched Jiale running away from him. He stood there without moving, causing many passing students to stop and observe him.
In their school, liking someone was done subtly, not due to any restriction between students, but because of the fear that the teachers might get told. As Ye Li was a school celebrity, many admired him, which led to the scenario this morning where Qin Jiale was interrogated by her classmates.
As soon as Qin Jiale got to the teacher’s office, she explained the situation and quickly received a pass.
“Mom, let’s go.” Qin Jiale said to Nangong Shulan after presenting her pass to the gatekeeper.
“Alright, are you cold? Let’s buy you some clothes.” Nangong Shulan said, looking at her thinly dressed daughter.
“No, I haven’t worn the clothes that my sister made me yet.” Qin Jiale had two of the dresses her sister made with her at school, but she wasn’t willing to wear them, so she just continued wearing her old clothes.
“Why aren’t you wearing them? It’s getting cold now; don’t catch a cold.” Nangong Shulan requested Qin Jiale to wear them, knowing that her older daughter had made several outfits for all seasons.
“I’m afraid others might borrow them.” Qin Jiale mumbled. She was concerned that if others saw her new clothes and wanted to borrow them, she wouldn’t be able to refuse. She adored those outfits and barely wanted to wear them herself, let alone lend them to others.
“Silly girl, clothes are meant to be worn. Your sister wrote that if you wreck those, she will send you more.” Nangong Shulan fretted for her daughter, feeling guilty for her past negligence.
“Understood, Mom, what do you want to eat?” Qin Jiale changed the subject by asking her mother.
“It’s up to you. Eat whatever you like. We no longer have to worry about money anymore.” Nangong Shulan didn’t want her daughter holding back on her meals, and informed her about their improved family condition.
