Chapter 669 - 668: A Countryman’s Jinx
Chapter 669: Chapter 668: A Countryman’s Jinx
At nearly 3:00 PM, Duan Yu received a notification and went to the district’s Public Security Bureau by herself. There, in an office, she was surprised to see her own commanding officer.
Duan Yu quickly snapped to attention and saluted.
"Sir!"
The officer, a man nearing fifty and dressed in uniform, returned the salute. "Duan Yu," he said, "there’s no need to be so formal and rigid."
"Your wounds have just healed. Let’s sit and talk."
Duan Yu remained at attention, her voice ringing out. "Sir, I’ve almost fully recovered. It doesn’t affect my combat abilities, let alone standing at attention."
The officer smiled faintly. He picked up a small brocade box and a certificate from his desk and handed them to Duan Yu.
After taking the box and certificate, Duan Yu lifted the lid of the box and stared, a little stunned.
"A Second-Class Merit?!"
The officer, satisfied with Duan Yu’s shocked expression, explained, "During that dangerous shootout in the United States, you disregarded your own safety to rescue Dr. Yan Feifan. You fulfilled your duty as a bodyguard excellently and were honorably wounded in the process."
"We’ve reviewed the footage from before and after the incident and unanimously agree that your decisive actions are worthy of such a commendation."
Duan Yu was silent for a moment before saying, "Sir, strictly speaking, I failed to properly fulfill my duties during that crisis."
"In the end, it was Mr. Yan’s incredible bravery that got both himself and me out of the conflict zone. He saved me."
The officer waved his hand dismissively. "If you hadn’t braved a hail of bullets to drag Mr. Yan from the car in the first place, none of what followed would have happened."
"Therefore, this commendation is well-deserved."
As he spoke, the officer bent down again and placed a small, black metal case on the desk.
Seeing the familiar case, Duan Yu’s eyes couldn’t help but light up.
After receiving a permissive nod from the officer, Duan Yu eagerly opened the case.
She took out the charcoal-gray pistol inside and, with a series of familiar yet dazzling CLICK-CLACKS, performed a check to reacquaint herself with its performance and firing mechanism.
Suddenly, a thought occurred to Duan Yu. She lowered the pistol she had been aiming out the window and asked, "Sir, is my assignment being changed?"
"What, you don’t want it to be?" the officer asked playfully.
"I will resolutely follow the organization’s arrangements!"
Duan Yu stated her position but couldn’t help adding, "Even though we’re back in the country, we can’t let our guard down when it comes to Mr. Yan’s personal safety."
"His medical skills are one-of-a-kind."
The officer gave a faint smile. "Mr. Yan’s security level has been raised. Therefore, you are now authorized to carry a sidearm."
Duan Yu secretly sighed in relief.
’As a bodyguard, you must always be aware of and prepared for the possibility of sacrificing your life for the person you’re protecting.’
At the time, Duan Yu had also prepared for the worst.
But in the end, she was the one saved by Yan Feifan.
Under those circumstances, no one would have blamed Yan Feifan for leaving on his own.
But Yan Feifan didn’t do that.
She had brought back the saline bag that Yan Feifan had bitten through despite the pain, and she kept it as her most treasured private possession.
’Yan Feifan didn’t abandon me in a moment of extreme danger,’ Duan Yu had decided, ’so I will repay him by dedicating my life to protecting him.’
Just then, the officer’s somewhat embarrassed voice reached Duan Yu’s ears.
"Duan Yu, ah... there’s something I need your help with."
"Sir, please give me your orders!" Duan Yu straightened her posture.
"Duan Yu, this is more of a personal matter. You don’t have to be so formal."
The officer explained, then sighed softly. "A comrade of ours was injured during a mission a while back. A blood clot formed in his brain, causing him to go blind."
"It’s been over two years, and his sight hasn’t returned."
"I heard that Mr. Yan can ablate blood clots via puncture?"
Duan Yu asked, somewhat puzzled, "Sir, for something like this, couldn’t you just directly..."
The officer interrupted her in a low voice. "Someone high up has made it very clear. No one is to use their status or position to order or coerce Mr. Yan into providing treatment."
"In special circumstances where an official request for Mr. Yan’s services is necessary, it must be reported and approved."
"So, when it comes to Mr. Yan, me asking is really not as effective as you asking."
"Duan Yu, your relationship with Mr. Yan is much closer..."
「Affiliated Hospital, deluxe inpatient room in the trauma surgery department!」
Liao Zili, who was recuperating here, was entertaining a few visiting friends with his older brother, Liao Ziqiang.
The leader of the group, Guan Zhe, noticed Liao Zili’s forehead was beaded with sweat and his jaw was clenched. He couldn’t help but ask, "Zili, are you in pain?"
"Was the surgery not a success?"
"Or did that guy intentionally screw it up as payback?"
Liao Ziqiang was the first to speak, explaining on his brother’s behalf, "Mr. Guan, you really can’t blame the guy for this. It’s my foolish brother here who’s trying to act tough and won’t let the doctors use anesthetics for the pain."
"And he’s already developed a tolerance to oral painkillers."
"So now, he has no choice but to tough it out."
Liao Zili forced a smile. "I’m used to the pain. I can still tolerate it at this level."
"After getting an anesthetic, that floating, drifting feeling is really uncomfortable. I’d rather feel the pain."
Guan Zhe couldn’t help but chuckle. "Zili, I think you’ve got Stockholm syndrome. You’re addicted to pain."
"Hey, but seriously, do you feel like it’s working?"
"You didn’t go under the knife for nothing, did you?"
Liao Zili smiled, a note of joy in his voice. "It’s working."
"The old pain was a bone-deep, gnawing pain that tormented my mind and my heart."
"But this new pain is a clean, crisp pain. Straightforward. It’s just... pain."
Guan Zhe looked unconvinced. "Pain is pain. What’s this about a ’bone-deep, gnawing pain’ versus a ’clean, crisp pain’?"
"I think it’s probably just the major pain overwhelming the minor pain."
"We’ll have to wait a few days for you to recover to see the real results..."
Liao Ziqiang cut in, "Mr. Guan, this time that guy might have actually been able to cure my brother’s leg pain."
"He found a small tooth fragment inside my brother’s leg bone."
"I was curious, so I had someone run a mass spectrometry analysis. Turns out that little fragment has a 99.9% similarity to my brother’s tooth composition."
"My brother shattered four of his teeth when he had his accident."
Guan Zhe shot him a sidelong glance and scoffed. "Hey, Liao Ziqiang, don’t tell me you’re starting to respect him. Are you going to go soft on him?"
"As if!"
Liao Ziqiang craned his neck, a look of disdain on his face. "No matter how skilled he is, he’s just a doctor. How great can he possibly be?"
"I’m in perfect health. I’m not likely to get sick."
"And even if I do, it’ll probably be something minor."
"If I’m really unlucky and get a serious illness, I’ll just go to Meilin Clinic."
"The chances of me ever needing to ask that guy for help in my lifetime are practically zero. Lower than the odds of winning the lottery jackpot."
"I don’t like him, and that’s that. What can he do to me?"
"Brother..."
From his hospital bed, Liao Zili interrupted, "This is a hospital. It’s bad luck to say things like that. You’re just asking to be jinxed."
He then tried to persuade him, "Mr. Yan is highly skilled, and he’s not a bad person. You should go apologize to him and smooth things over."
Liao Ziqiang just waved a hand at him dismissively. "You just focus on getting better. Don’t worry about my business."
He then turned his gaze to Guan Zhe and asked, "Mr. Guan, have you given up on that girl?"
Guan Zhe sighed with regret. "I have no choice but to give up."
"She’s either at the hospital or at home. She barely goes to the gym once a week. I have no opportunity to even get close to her."
"There are thousands of beautiful girls out there. No need to get hung up on just one."
Liao Ziqiang chimed in, "That’s true. Besides, a workaholic woman, no matter how beautiful, has no fun in her."
The image of Yu Suye appeared in Guan Zhe’s mind. He let out a reluctant sigh before changing the subject. "Ziqiang, there’s a party tonight. Can you make it?"
Liao Ziqiang’s face lit up with anticipation. "I can go, I can go! My brother doesn’t need me watching over him twenty-four hours a day..."
「While these men were discussing him, Yan Feifan was at the Little Red House, examining two patients, one old and one young, brought to him by Dr. Kevin Vega...」
