Chapter 668 - 667: The Age of Pitting Fathers
Chapter 668: Chapter 667: The Age of Pitting Fathers
At 12:40 PM on Wednesday, Pan Jichuan, having just finished lunch, rushed to the plastic surgery center.
At this moment, Pan Jichuan was filled with an excitement he could barely contain.
’It’s almost time to announce it to the world and bask in everyone’s envious, jealous, and resentful stares.’
The day he had first told his father the good news, Pan Jichuan had been eager to announce it to the whole world, but his father stopped him.
His father told him it was best to let Mr. Yan announce the apprenticeship himself, or at least wait until he had Mr. Yan’s permission to do so.
Pan Jichuan thought about it. Mr. Yan really hadn’t said anything of the sort.
So his father told him to be patient a little longer.
After all, it wasn’t unheard of for things like this to fall through at the last minute. It was better to say and do less to avoid displeasing Mr. Yan.
For the past two days, Pan Jichuan had been bottling it all up, and it was agonizing.
Not only that, but he had to pretend to join his colleagues in speculating about who Mr. Yan’s other three students could be.
Of course, he was also extremely curious about the identities of the other two students.
Today, Pan Jichuan could finally appear at the Affiliated Hospital as a student by Mr. Yan’s side.
Walking briskly into the first-floor lobby of the plastic surgery center, Pan Jichuan caught sight of two tall figures in white coats out of the corner of his eye.
Pan Jichuan looked up.
Standing by the lobby’s waiting area with their hands clasped were two young, handsome doctors, both nearly six feet tall, with sharp eyebrows, bright eyes, and high-bridged noses.
One of them had a cold, unapproachable expression, as if warning others to keep their distance.
The other wore a smile as warm as a spring breeze, always giving friendly replies to the young women who approached him with questions.
Pan Jichuan knew both of them.
The one with the cold expression was named Zhu Jian. He had been a year below Pan Jichuan in medical school, and his father was a renowned pathology expert at the Affiliated Hospital.
His father handled most of the urgent medical tests—the kind needed when unexpected conditions were discovered mid-surgery. An immediate pathological analysis of diseased tissue would be required to determine the next step, and Zhu Jian’s father was the one who got it done.
The friendly one was Li Tianlin, also a resident physician.
The guy had graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in the United States. After interning at an American hospital for two years, he had returned to China for some unknown reason.
His father was no ordinary person either; he was a famous neurology expert in Binhai.
Compared to these two, Pan Jichuan’s background as a "second-generation doctor" was clearly much weaker.
Although his father was a chief physician in general surgery, he was still a long way from being an expert. He wasn’t indispensable to the Affiliated Hospital, or even to the general surgery department, which was packed with chief physicians.
With a strong suspicion, Pan Jichuan approached the two of them.
"You’re here waiting for Mr. Yan, too, right?"
Zhu Jian glanced at Pan Jichuan and gave a slight nod.
Li Tianlin, however, was all smiles. "So you’re the third one!" he said with a hint of surprise. "I really didn’t expect that. Didn’t expect it at all."
’What does he mean, he didn’t expect it? Is he saying I’m not qualified?’ His words made Pan Jichuan a little uncomfortable.
Suppressing his displeasure, he replied coolly, "I didn’t expect the other two to be you guys, either."
Li Tianlin chuckled. "I feel pretty lucky to be here today myself."
"My father had already arranged for me to join Mr. Wu’s medical research team."
"But then, unexpectedly, Mr. Yan started taking students."
"I’ve always preferred being a surgeon, so I pleaded with my father a bit. I didn’t think he’d agree, but he did, and here I am."
These words made Pan Jichuan grind his teeth in anger.
’Damn it, are you trying to humblebrag? So what if you have a good dad who can pave the way for you? What’s there to show off about?’
’We’ll see what the future holds. Let’s see where we are in five years, or ten!’
Filled with a new resolve, Pan Jichuan shifted his feet and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Li Tianlin and Zhu Jian, facing the lobby entrance.
However, he kept a distance of more than a large step away from them.
Pan Jichuan absolutely wasn’t doing this because, compared to these two, he was not only half a head shorter but also not as handsome.
It was mainly because Pan Jichuan looked down on them for riding their fathers’ coattails.
’Just think of all the blood, sweat, and tears I poured in behind the scenes to become Mr. Yan’s student.’
’And them...’
’It’s so infuriating to think about. Life is so unfair.’
Pan Jichuan couldn’t help but think of how Mr. Yan had appeared out of nowhere, with no background to speak of, and had leaped to a position admired by countless doctors.
’I’m lucky enough to have Mr. Yan’s guidance. If I work hard, I’ll definitely be able to make a name for myself in the medical world one day.’
At this thought, his gaze toward the entrance grew even more fervent...
Yan Feifan didn’t keep the three of them waiting long. A little before five minutes to one, he entered the plastic surgery center from outside with Yu Beihua.
Facing Pan Jichuan, Zhu Jian, and Li Tianlin, who had come forward to greet him, Yan Feifan asked with a stern expression, "You’ve all reviewed the patient files I sent you last night, haven’t you?"
"Mr. Yan, I’ve read them!"
"Mr. Yan, I’ve studied them all!"
Pan Jichuan and Li Tianlin replied in a hurry.
Zhu Jian, ever a man of few words, just grunted forcefully and nodded vigorously.
"Good. Follow me to the ward!"
After saying this, Yan Feifan turned and walked away.
Yu Beihua, Zhu Jian, Li Tianlin, and Pan Jichuan—the four of them—followed closely behind.
A few nurses busy in the lobby witnessed this scene, secretly took photos with their phones, and posted them in their colleague group chat.
"The mystery is solved! Mr. Yan’s four students have all appeared!"
As a few photos and a short video went viral among circles of colleagues, friends, and work groups, the identities of the other three—everyone except Yu Beihua—were exposed almost immediately.
The fact that they were all "second-generation doctors" sparked a heated discussion.
"It’s really too hard for doctors from ordinary backgrounds to get ahead."
"Mr. Yan himself came from an ordinary background, but look at the students he’s taken on. Not a single one is without connections."
"It’s infuriating and disappointing."
Where there were accusations, there were naturally defenders.
"Don’t make this about being from an ordinary background. Take an objective look at yourself. Are you as outstanding as these four?"
"Mr. Yan simply chose the best."
Someone clamored, "How do you know I’m not as good as them without a competition?"
"Mr. Yan quietly filled all his student slots. This is all about connections, a backroom deal."
"I strongly suggest the hospital implement an admissions system! When a renowned expert like Mr. Yan takes on students, it shouldn’t be about connections. There should be a fair and open examination process."
As soon as this was said, someone retorted, "Are you still dreaming? Forget about whether that’s even possible. Even if it were implemented, doctors from ordinary backgrounds would have even less room to advance."
"Test knowledge? Test skills?"
"No matter what the test is, how could you possibly compete with the ’second-generation doctors’ who have been immersed in medicine by their families since childhood?"
"To put it bluntly, your advantage lies in the long run. You have to persevere and grind it out on your own..."
Someone self-reliantly said, "This is an age of nepotism. We have no one to rely on but ourselves. All we can do is work hard so our children will have a father to rely on..."
In the doctors’ group chat, the debate between doctors from ordinary backgrounds and the second-generation doctors raged on. But in the nurses’ circle, the topic of discussion had already gone way off track.
"One gorgeous guy leading three other gorgeous guys, and they’re all so talented. I really want to snatch one and take him home."
"Your thinking is too small. If it were me, I’d snatch them all and leave no one behind."
"You’d take the other one who isn’t as tall or handsome, too?"
"Of course! Why not? Besides the eye candy for warming the bed, you always need someone to do the chores at home, right? Hehe..."
While they were the subject of so much discussion, Zhu Jian, Pan Jichuan, and the others were in a private hospital room, conducting a further hands-on examination of the patient from Thailand, Nawa.
Yan Feifan had given them a task.
Disregarding all post-operative consequences, they were to come up with a bone-restructuring surgical plan with the primary goal of creating a curvaceous figure...
