Chapter 607 - 606: Medical Consultant
Chapter 607: Chapter 606: Medical Consultant
On Thursday morning, when Yan Feifan arrived at the Affiliated Hospital, he found that several neurosurgeons from out of town had already arrived in the neurosurgery department, waiting to see him.
Faced with their enthusiasm, Yan Feifan had no choice but to change his original work schedule and start a discussion with them.
As more doctors from out of town gradually joined, the scale of this impromptu exchange meeting began to swell.
Yan Feifan found it increasingly difficult to get away.
It wasn’t until nearly twelve noon that Yan Feifan was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief, when Lo Jun, along with Dr. Zheng Ling and others from the department, took the ten or twenty doctors who had arrived early out for a banquet.
Yan Feifan didn’t go out to lunch with them. Instead, he went to the hospital cafeteria for a quick meal.
After getting his food, he was looking for an empty seat when he suddenly saw Dr. Zhou Xian from cardiac surgery, who was also eating.
The guy was listlessly picking at the food on his tray with his chopsticks.
Yan Feifan sat down in the empty seat across from him and asked, "Dr. Zhou, you seem distracted. No appetite?"
"Or is the food just that bad?"
"When has the cafeteria food ever been good?"
Zhou Xian forced a smile and made a joke before sighing. "Mr. Yan, although Mr. Liang has allowed me to be the lead surgeon on a heart transplant, the patients don’t trust me. None of them have agreed to let me perform the surgery."
Yan Feifan said, "Oh." He continued, "After all, it’s a surgery that costs several hundred thousand yuan, and it’s a heart transplant. It’s inevitable that patients would have their concerns."
He added encouragingly, "Always be prepared. You never know when good luck will strike."
Zhou Xian hummed softly. "Mr. Yan, I’ve been practicing constantly, and I’m also trying my best to secure an opportunity."
"To be honest, I paid out of my own pocket, offering to cover half the surgery fee, and successfully convinced a patient with severe heart failure to let me be the lead surgeon."
"It’s just that..."
He said, somewhat vexed, "A couple of days ago, the guy unfortunately caught a cold, and his heart condition has become as bad as it can possibly be."
"Looking at his condition, it’s just a matter of days now. He probably won’t be able to wait for a donor heart."
After saying this, Zhou Xian sighed heavily again.
Yan Feifan didn’t know how to comfort him in this situation.
The shortage of donor organs for transplantation is a worldwide problem.
Even in the United States, where organ transplantation is most advanced, the wait for a heart is at least six months.
On average, 22 people die every day while waiting for various organs.
In our country, transplant organ donors are also quite scarce, but the scarcity is not as severe as in developed countries.
This is because another key factor—money—forces many patients to give up on organ transplant treatment.
For example, a heart transplant costs between three hundred thousand and five hundred thousand yuan.
The post-operative care, lasting one to two months, also costs roughly the same amount.
And that’s not all.
After returning home to recover, there’s also about a hundred thousand yuan per year in expenses for medication, check-ups, and nursing care.
For the average citizen, this is unaffordable.
Yan Feifan couldn’t solve the current state of organ transplantation in the country, nor Zhou Xian’s current predicament.
He decided to eat first and fill his stomach!
Yan Feifan picked up a trembling piece of braised pork with his chopsticks and suddenly recalled an article he had read before.
"Dr. Zhou, in last year’s ninth issue of *NATURE*, there was an article that said our country’s Jingcheng Tianhe Medical Research Center successfully bred a type of polygenically modified pig injected with human genes."
"These pigs, both in acute and chronic terms, exhibit low immunogenicity, making them the most superior xenotransplantation donors."
"The article pointed out that the organs from these pigs can significantly reduce immune rejection, advance the development of xenotransplantation, and make a huge contribution to solving the shortage of human transplant organs."
Yan Feifan recounted the contents from memory and said, "Dr. Zhou, you could contact this research center and ask if they are conducting any experimental xenotransplants of pig hearts."
He suggested, "If it’s truly as amazing as they claim in the article, transplanting one of their cultured pig hearts into your patient might help him hold on for a few more weeks."
"Perhaps it would be long enough for him to wait for a new donor heart."
Zhou Xian grimaced. "Mr. Yan, your proposal is a bit too..."
He had wanted to say "wishful" or "naive," but considering he was talking to Yan Feifan, he softened his words.
"...too idealistic and bold."
"Even if the patient consents, getting approval for such a xenotransplantation human trial from the various medical and ethics committees is no easy task."
"For one simple thing, can we ensure that this transplant won’t transmit some pig-specific diseases to humans?"
Yan Feifan nodded. "Dr. Zhou, you’re right. My thinking was too superficial."
Seeing Yan Feifan’s casual reply, Zhou Xian cautioned him in a mature and steady tone, "Mr. Yan, you’re a medical genius. You dare to think and act, you don’t want to be constrained, and you have the ideas and courage to break through shackles and shatter taboos."
"However, some shackles and taboos cannot be broken."
"Plenty of sci-fi movies have shown it—the unrestrained research of some genius leads our planet to destruction."
"For example, a zombie virus."
This made Yan Feifan chuckle.
"Dr. Zhou, you’re overestimating my abilities. I don’t have what it takes to destroy humanity."
Zhou Xian smiled as well. "Mr. Yan, just consider it me worrying unnecessarily. A little reminder..."
After lunch, Yan Feifan didn’t go straight back to the Little Red House. Instead, he took a detour to the front of the hospital’s comprehensive teaching building.
There was a small plaza here, several hundred square meters in size.
Yan Feifan saw two large box trucks with Jingcheng license plates parked in the plaza, along with ten or twenty workers and engineers working under the scorching sun and high heat.
Some of them were unloading metal boxes of various sizes from the trucks, while others, drenched in sweat, were setting up an exhibition hall.
"Feifan, Feifan..."
Yan Feifan followed the voice and saw Yu Youlian waving at him from the shade in front of the teaching building.
Standing beside her was the graceful Ouyang Yanran.
Yan Feifan quickly walked over.
"Mr. Yu, Yanran..."
Before Yan Feifan could even finish his greeting, the two of them grabbed him and started patting him all over.
"Hey, hey, we’re in public..."
"What are you shouting about? We’re just verifying your identity!"
Yu Youlian patted Yan Feifan’s shoulder hard and complained, "You brat, do you have any idea? I was scared to death when I saw the news that you’d been shot and killed in the United States."
"Thankfully, it was just a false alarm!"
"Kid, you’re not on your own anymore. Be more careful and cautious with everything you do from now on."
Yan Feifan said with a wronged expression, "It’s not like I wanted to run into something like that."
After a pause, he asked, "For this surgical robot demonstration, will there be a live surgery demo?"
Ouyang Yanran took over the conversation. "Feifan, the surgical robot being demonstrated this time combines the most mature and newest technologies from our three companies—Baining Technology, Baiyulan Technology, and the Shenlan Automation Research Institute. It will definitely blow you away."
She added, teasingly, "Feifan, you’ll just have to wait patiently for our demonstration tomorrow."
Yu Youlian chuckled lightly. "Feifan, before the demonstration tomorrow, we will also formally announce to the public that our three companies are forming a joint venture, a high-tech company responsible for the manufacturing and R&D of the surgical robots."
"Feifan, are you interested in being the medical consultant for our company?"
"There’s a gift of shares involved!"
