Chapter 298: Chapter 60: Heavy Cavalry Surprise Attack (Part 3)

"Augus, you know how important our mission is!

That bastard was careless and got spotted by the human cavalry, fine, whatever! But he actually let one of them get away!

’Don’t get emotional,’ you say. Easy for you to say! Then you tell me, how are we supposed to complete the mission the Prince gave us?" Gustav glared angrily at Augus.

Just as Robson had guessed, the soldiers led by Gustav had been dispatched by Prince Odoruo to head north and secretly aid the armies of Castro and Tec.

For this plan, Prince Odoruo had even calculated the specific timing, banking on the human army having to rest tonight, which would allow them to force a march and bypass Wayne Mountain in a single night.

When Prince Odoruo’s main forces arrived, they would blend into another Gnoll army, becoming a surprise detachment to catch the humans off guard, and then rescue Castro and Tec from their clutches.

"We’re exposed, so we’re exposed. We just keep moving forward," Augus said, shaking his head at Gustav’s words.

"Perfectly completing the mission the Prince gave us was always the ideal scenario. Our main objective is still to reinforce Castro’s forces, to make the humans hesitate to act recklessly.

Besides... who said we’ve failed?" Augus said, his eyes narrowing as he looked into the distance at the Jackal Wolfman Chief that Gustav had thrown to the ground.

"The one they spotted was a Gnoll, and that Gnoll was a considerable distance from us," Augus said slowly.

"And you know they didn’t see us?" Gustav shot back.

"And what if they did? Even if they saw us, we’d just be another group of Gnolls," Augus said.

"Hmph... Things had better be as simple as you say."

Just as Gustav was about to pull the Jackal Wolfman Chief up from the ground, a series of long, faint calls suddenly reached his ears. They were so faint that he could barely notice them without concentrating.

"What are you thinking about?" Augus asked, looking at the suddenly silent Gustav.

"Did you... hear something? It sounds like humans on the move..."

SKREEE!

Before Gustav could finish his sentence, a piercing shriek suddenly echoed from afar. Gustav looked up in surprise toward the source of the sound.

There, he saw a small, silver-white dot in the distant sky.

"What is that thing?" Gustav asked Augus.

"I have no idea..." Augus said, staring at the distant dot. ’Who could possibly tell what that is?’

"Wait... Do you feel that?" Gustav asked Augus.

"The ground... it’s shaking... This commotion, it’s Heavy Cavalry! It has to be Heavy Cavalry!" Shock filled Augus’s eyes.

"How is that possible? They can’t be this fast, can they?"

Gustav was not a Warlock, so his Spiritual Power was weaker than Augus’s. Moreover, an ear injury he’d sustained in his youth kept him from immediately noticing the vibrations in the ground. He had to crouch and press his ear to the earth to listen. Sure enough, a deep rumbling sound carried from the distance, like the dense, overlapping beat of countless drums.

"They really are that fast!" Gustav exclaimed.

"This is bad! If the humans can move this quickly, things are going to be difficult!" Augus’s face soured.

How long had it been since that scout cavalryman managed to escape? An hour? Maybe not even that long.

You can tell a lot from the speed at which an army assembles—its level of organization, its overall condition...

’Didn’t Prince Odoruo say the human army had just finished a long march and definitely wouldn’t have the energy to fight?’

’This is what ’not enough energy’ looks like? Their assembly speed is even faster than my own so-called elites on their best day!’

’And they weren’t just cavalry, they were Heavy Cavalry! The complexity of mobilizing them isn’t even in the same league!’

"What do we do?" Gustav, now panicking, looked anxiously at Augus.

This motley Beastman Corps under Prince Odoruo was, in reality, Gustav’s own tribal warriors. Gustav was the Chieftain of these Beastmen, and Augus was the tribe’s shaman, also known as a Warlock.

Normally, it was Augus who came up with the plans. In the current situation, Gustav instinctively turned to him.
