Chapter 304: A Loyal Companion
Chapter 304: A Loyal Companion
The sudden question made Xu Wei shift his attention toward Xiang Ling before he answered - "Truth be told, I didn’t sense his presence that night. I was actually roaming outside in the courtyard when I noticed a dark energy flying across the manor. So, I immediately followed after it and found the intruder in your chamber."
Xiang Ling slowly nodded her head in understanding as she muttered, "This makes sense. I have been wanting to ask you about this for a while but never got the chance."
After that night, she did try to find out about that intruder, but no matter how hard she tried, she found nothing about him. What she found even more weird was that except for that very night, no such incident happened again, making her wonder if that night was merely a coincidence.
"Master, why did you suddenly bring up the topic of something happening to you? Is something wrong?" Xu Wei asked and there was a clear sign of worry on his face as he looked at her.
Xiang Ling took in a deep breath before she turned her attention back to the scenery in front of her and took a big sip of the wine. "You know how the things are currently in the Mortal Realm. Considering my identity as an Immortal, I’m bound to get involved sooner or later."
"But do you have to?"
The question made her turn her attention back to Xu Wei and she found him looking anxious as he stared at her. "What do you mean?" She asked as she was confused by his question.
"I’m asking if you have to get involved in this matter between the Five Realms and that Shadow Lord? You are currently in the Mortal Realm living as a mortal. You can easily stay away from all this mess. Just stay here and keep living your life normally. I don’t want anything to happen to you, Master." His each word was filled with the same anxiety that was clearly evident on his face.
Xiang Ling smiled softly as she reached out for his hand that was resting on his knee and patted it lightly before retracting. "I know that you are worried about my safety, but the world outside the Mortal Realm isn’t that simple, Xiao Wei. Even though I’m currently undergoing my life tribulation, if a war started between the Realms and the Shadow Lord, I will be summoned back to the Upper Realms to join in it."
She stopped to let out a small sigh before she continued, "But that’s not the case here. I’m an Immortal. It’s my duty to keep the innocent lives safe and protect the Five Realms. I can’t neglect my duty."
"But Master, why do you have to worry about the war or the safety of the other people? All Five Realms have their armies who can fight in the war. Why do general people have to become a part of this blood-bath?" Xu Wei felt anger taking over him when he heard about the stupid rules that were forcing his Master to get involved in the war.
Xiang Ling smiled at the young man before she turned to face him fully and spoke, "Stop worrying already. Even if I end up dying in the future, I will make sure that you will live a safe and comfortable life. As a little demon fairy, I’m sure the Shadow Lord and the Dark Force will not target you. You can continue living your life in some secluded but safe corner of this world."
"I will not let anything happen to you." Xu Wei’s voice was filled with determination as he spoke the words, and so were his eyes that were staring right at her. "I will protect you with my life, Master."
"Xiao Wei-"
"I have made up my mind, Master. You can’t make me change my decision. From the day you saved me and brought me to this place, I made up my mind to protect you for the rest of my life. So, I will do exactly that."
Xiang Ling was left so stunned by his serious words that she failed to find a proper response. She just sat there staring at the man in shock. Just one look at him and she could tell that he was serious about his words. He was indeed ready to protect her with everything he got. But that meant putting himself in the harm’s way, and that was the last thing she wanted for him. She didn’t save him just to see him dying because of his stupid loyalty.
Still, she knew that her words wouldn’t be able to make him change his mind. She decided to find another way to settle him away in some safe place so that he could continue living his life normally.
"Master, you can stay here for a while longer. Please look after yourself. I will be waiting if you need me." He spoke right before he stood up and jumped from the roof, landing smoothly in the garden below while barely making any sound.
Xiang Ling watched him walking out of the courtyard before his silhouette disappeared in the darkness of the night. Shaking her head slowly, she returned her attention to the moon. "Tsk tsk, Xiang Ling. Who could have thought that you will find someone as loyal as him? Unfortunately, the current circumstances aren’t good for you to keep him with you."
She picked up the jar and took another sip of the wine. Her days in the Mortal Realm were limited, but there was a lot of work she needed to take care of. She made up her mind to seal away all her personal feelings for the time being and concentrate on wrapping up her remaining work in the Mortal Realm. She needed to make sure that after the ending of her life tribulation, the Chen family and its businesses would keep thriving without any worries or big obstacles.
