Chapter 351: Familiar Writings
======= STATUS ========
Name: Run Down Sheets
Remark: Belonged to the Feng Clan’s Founder [Regenerate: 10,000 EXP]
======================
Yi Chen subtly nodded, seeing that what he heard was in sync with what he was seeing and generated the next set of remarks the next second.
[Remark (2/3): was written when he was on the brink of losing his sanity (Regenerate: 15,000 EXP)]
.
.
[Remark (3/3): Filled with words and scribblings that may make sense to you]
’...May make sense to me?’ Yi Chen couldn’t help but furrow his eyes when he read through those lines.
Turning towards Feng Haoran, the next moment he asked, "...Patriarch, would it be possible for me to take a look at them?"
"Curious, aren’t you?" Feng Haoran asked with a smile and continued, "It’s alright. Even I felt the same when I came across these sheets for the first time.
At that time, I thought that I might just be able to understand the founder’s writings and discover some secrets. While that didn’t happen for me, it might just happen for you. Here, give it a try."
As Feng Haoran finished his words, he put away the thick piece of glass using his spiritual energy and gestured to Yi Chen to take a look with a subtle smile.
"Haha...the Patriarch saw right through me," Yi Chen feigned laughter while scratching the back of his head, which elicited a chuckle from Feng Haoran.
"It’s only natural for a young man to think in this direction." Feng Haoran said while pointing towards the yellow sheets, "Be sure to handle it a little carefully, as they are quite old and might tear up easily."
"Yes, I’ll keep that in mind." Yi Chen answered while reaching his hands towards the sheets and gently turning them to glance at the first page.
"This..."
Yi Chen couldn’t help but furrow his eyes the next second, seeing the entire page filled with bold characters that barely made any sense to anyone, even if they tried reading.
However, not wanting to give up so easily, Yi Chen still tried to read it out.
"D-Dericia Fair Meik...Zerik?"
He muttered while feeling a sense of familiarity from the words but couldn’t quite put his finger on why it felt familiar to him.
Meanwhile, hearing what Yi Chen had just muttered, Feng Haoran nodded his head and said, "Right, that’s what it says. Almost all the text in the pages contains the exact same words..."
Feng Haoran sighed while shaking his head, "It’s only after I had glanced through these sheets that I was able to believe that the founder had truly lost his sanity by the time he was writing this and the unreasonable actions he took to end his life thereafter finally started making sense..."
"...What actions? Didn’t the founder die of old age?" Yi Chen couldn’t help but ask while turning towards Feng Haoran when he heard those words.
From his words earlier, he had assumed that because of his deteriorating mental health, Feng Mong Li had passed away naturally.
"No, he didn’t." Feng Haoran shook his head and continued, "Founder Feng Mong Li had instead rushed out of the clan when he had only a few months left to live.
The elders that chased after him were in the end forced to give up as they saw him rush to the depths of the Valley of Death."
"Rush to the Valley of Death..." Yi Chen muttered while suddenly thinking of what Feng Lei had told him about the Crimson Fire Arts.
’...Didn’t the Crimson Fire Art originate from the Valley of Death? Could the reason why the founder rushed into the Valley of Death be because of this reason...’ Yi Chen thought as a wave of worry began to well up in his heart.
’If that’s really the case...then will I also end up losing my mind because of this art?... But didn’t Yu’er go through the entire art before recommending it to me? If it was truly dangerous, Yu’er wouldn’t have recommended it to me in the first place.’
The more Yi Chen thought over it, the more confused he became. Therefore, he decided to confirm it later when he was back at the manor.
’When I’m back at the manor, I’ll go through the Crimson Fire Art status panel and check all its remarks,’ he thought to himself with a serious expression.
Meanwhile, seeing the frown on Yi Chen’s face, Feng Haoran nodded his head and said, "Your reaction is understandable. It still bogs the mind of many of the elders as to why the Founder did what he did at that time..."
Feng Haoran sighed for a moment before telling Yi Chen to go through the rest of the pages, "Apart from these nonsensical words, he had also made a few scribblings on the sheets."
"Oh..."
Prompted by those words, Yi Chen turned to the next few pages and found the scribblings that Feng Haoran was talking about.
’Wait, isn’t this...’
Yi Chen’s eyes couldn’t help but widen as he was immediately reminded of a particular nightmare he had gone through when he was at the tomb.
’It looks almost the same...’ he thought while looking at the black monolith that had been scribbled on the sheet with red, indistinguishable characters marked on it.
At the same time, he finally understood the reasoning behind the familiarity he felt from the characters he had just read a few moments ago.
’But didn’t I see this in the Sky Devouring Tomb?... How is this related to the Founder Feng Mong Li? Could there be a link between the Sky Devouring Tomb and the Valley of Death...’
Several questions appeared in Yi Chen’s mind as he slowly turned the pages of sheets that were filled with the same set of characters before pausing when he saw a drawing of an eyeball that took an entire page.
It was entirely black in colour except for the iris and pupil that were painted white and took more than one-fourth the space.
Just by looking into it for a couple of seconds, Yi Chen couldn’t help but feel a sense of wariness welling up inside him.
Meanwhile, seeing the familiar drawing, Feng Haoran explained.
"Apparently, when the elders saw this eye’s sketch for the first time, they thought that Founder Feng Mong Li was under the control of some beast that was in the depths of the Valley of Death.
However, even after asking several masters, there has never been any confirmation of whether a beast that possesses such eyes exists inside the Valley of Death or not...So a cloud of uncertainty still persists with regard to his death."
