Chapter 662 - 321: The Little Chef’s Fall
Chapter 662: Chapter 321: The Little Chef’s Fall
Apartment 2102, Building 8, Sunac Binjiang No.1 Courtyard.
The heavy blackout curtains on the balcony were drawn tight, plunging the living room into a dim, quiet atmosphere perfectly suited for watching a movie. Aside from a ring of warm yellow LED strip lights along the ceiling, the only illumination came from the large white projector screen on the wall.
Top-tier Dynaudio speakers flanked the screen, delivering crisp, pure, 3D surround sound. This cinema-grade audio quality made its two-hundred-thousand-yuan price tag entirely worthwhile. The immersion was especially crucial now, given that they were watching a horror movie—a genre that relied heavily on exceptional sound design to elevate its impact.
On the soft, plush sofa bed, Lin Shen was completely engrossed in the film. Beside him, Gu Wanqing’s mind was wandering. True to the classic horror formula, the first half of the movie was entirely dedicated to exposition and world-building, devoid of any real scares. That wasn’t to say the buildup was unimportant; without it, the impending terror wouldn’t be able to reach its climax. Even so, the first half of ’The Conjuring’ was undeniably a bit dull, which left Gu Wanqing distracted.
She sneakily brushed the back of her hand against his. When she received no response, she couldn’t help but wonder, "Is Lin Shen really just planning to watch a movie tonight? Does he need me to drop a hint?"
Gu Wanqing stole a glance at the man beside her. Bathed in the ever-shifting glow of the screen, his side profile looked incredibly handsome. Whenever she looked at his face, her heart would race for no apparent reason. Though she didn’t want to admit it, she was completely captivated by his looks. In fact, if he hadn’t been so handsome, she wouldn’t have been bold enough to fake falling asleep just to bait him into a kiss the last time they hung out. Unfortunately, he hadn’t caught on.
Determined not to let the opportunity slip again, she decided to make her hints a little more obvious. She reached out and slipped her soft little hand straight into his palm. This cheeky little gesture made the corners of Lin Shen’s lips curl upward. He turned his head and looked at her with a gentle smile.
"What’s wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing," Gu Wanqing muttered softly, lowering her head as she casually hugged his arm.
This was the absolute limit to how far she could push their relationship. If she took another step forward, she honestly wouldn’t know what to do. Were they supposed to start hugging and kissing? She had zero experience, but she felt perfectly content with things just the way they were. Cuddling with the person she liked most, watching a movie in the dim light... Was there anything more blissful than this? Absolutely not.
Settling in, she refocused her attention on the movie. Of course, her viewing was now tinged with a genuine sense of dread. The long-winded exposition had finally ended, and the terrifying jump scares were arriving one after another.
Take the scene where the female protagonist went down to investigate the basement. Anyone familiar with horror movies knew that the moment the background noise cut out, a scare was imminent. Sure enough, a split second later, a pair of disembodied hands suddenly emerged from the pitch-black void behind the protagonist and clapped. The sudden shock made Gu Wanqing flinch violently. If she hadn’t quickly covered her mouth with her free hand, she would have screamed out loud.
Lin Shen, on the other hand, remained completely unfazed. He had watched enough horror movies to find these cheap tricks like child’s play. Still, he hadn’t expected such an intense reaction from her. He chuckled softly.
"Are you scared?"
"No way!" Gu Wanqing retorted defensively, despite the lingering fear on her face. "I was just startled by the sudden jump scare, that’s all. I’m not actually scared of the movie itself."
"Alright, alright," Lin Shen replied, gently patting her head with a fond smile. He didn’t bother exposing her bravado, knowing full well that the rest of the movie would be packed with terrifying moments.
Sure enough, as the plot thickened, the story barreled toward its climax. Characters possessed by demons, priests performing exorcisms, and a relentless barrage of jump scares caused Gu Wanqing to instinctively shrink closer to Lin Shen until she was practically entirely in his lap. She hugged his right arm tightly against her chest, burying her face into the crook of his neck every time something horrifying flashed across the screen.
Her antics brought a soft laugh from him.
"It’s okay. The scary part is over."
"PHEW!" Gu Wanqing let out a long sigh of relief.
Seeing this, Lin Shen’s grin widened. "You keep hiding from all the scary parts. No wonder you said you weren’t scared."
"It’s a tactical retreat!" she argued, still making excuses. Refusing to admit defeat, she vowed to keep her eyes open through the next scare.
But when it finally came, she couldn’t handle it and dove straight back into the safety of his neck. This time, she even threw her white silk-stockinged legs over his lap, clinging to him as if he were a giant teddy bear.
Her rapid, frightened breaths brushed against his ear. Combined with the faint, pleasant fragrance wafting from her body, it left him feeling incredibly refreshed. The internet was right—beautiful girls really did have their own unique, natural scent.
Lin Shen couldn’t help but feel a little stirred. After all, what guy could resist a soft, delicate girl repeatedly throwing herself into his arms? He certainly couldn’t.
Lowering his head, he asked in a gentle voice, "Since you’re so scared, do you want me to hold you while we watch?"
