Chapter 648: Chapter 316: I Guarantee Everyone Will Understand at a Glance
"Hey, we’re lucky to have anything to eat at all.
Besides, this stuff is pretty filling. I feel like I could live on it for three meals a day.
If you have a problem with it, you can give me yours this afternoon!"
Han Ruoxi glared at him.
"Just eat your food. I really don’t know how you have such an appetite. This stuff doesn’t even have any flavor!"
Li Chang’an said as he distributed the supplies.
"Han Ruoxi, if you think it’s that bad, go apply for some flavoring from logistics.
But as I recall, Sun Yang secretly finished off that bottle of hot sauce you brought back last time in less than two days!"
"Captain! That’s a baseless accusation!" Sun Yang slapped his chest.
"What do you mean ’secretly finished’? I borrowed it, fair and square! Besides, by eating it, I was just lightening our squad’s load. You know hot sauce expires easily!"
Han Ruoxi scoffed.
"You’re a living disposal unit for expired goods! In a couple of days, I’m just going to apply for a personal supply locker. Let’s see how you ’borrow’ things then!"
Amidst the noisy banter, everyone finished distributing the supplies, had a quick lunch, and resumed their afternoon training.
On the training ground, the flashes of electric arcs, the roar of firearms, and the clash of blades wove together into a scene of intense, bustling activity.
As evening fell, Instructor Wei appeared again with new orders.
"Insect Hunter Squad, you’re deploying tomorrow at 0600. You have a mission!" Wei Zhuang’s voice was as crisp as ever.
Sun Yang shouted.
"Instructor, don’t tell me it’s another simple recon mission. At our skill level, we should be on the front lines showing what we can do!"
Wei Zhuang sneered.
"Recon mission? You really think you’re qualified for recon? This mission is to clean out a few Alien Martial Artist outposts. It won’t be easy, so don’t get ahead of yourselves!"
Li Chang’an nodded.
"Instructor, we’ll be ready!"
"Enough talk. Get some rest tonight!" With that, Wei Zhuang turned and left.
The squad members exchanged glances and began packing their gear, preparing for the next day’s mission.
Han Ruoxi muttered under her breath.
"They call us new recruits, but they use us as cannon fodder every day. Who knows what we’ll be up against tomorrow!"
Li Chang’an laughed.
"What’s there to be afraid of? I’m here. Worst-case scenario, we’ll just have to chop off a few more alien heads!"
「Night fell.」
Han Ruoxi walked into the common room carrying a pile of miscellaneous equipment parts.
She kicked a few pairs of combat boots scattered on the floor out of her way and shouted into the room.
"Hey! Which one of you bastards left your boots all over the place? I almost tripped!"
Sun Yang leaped up from the sofa, an unopened protein bar still in his hand.
"Whoops, my bad! I left them there by accident! Why don’t you hit me a couple of times to blow off some steam?"
Han Ruoxi rolled her eyes and placed the equipment in her hands on the table.
"Cut the crap. Did you pack enough ammo for tomorrow’s mission? Don’t you dare tell me the ammo box is too heavy to carry when the time comes!"
"Relax! I could carry two boxes tomorrow, no problem! If it’s really too much, maybe you could help me with one?" Sun Yang sidled up with a grin, reaching for Han Ruoxi’s protein bar.
Han Ruoxi slapped his hand away.
"Are you missing a screw or something? You dare touch my stuff? Go prep your ammo and stop messing around with me!"
Sun Yang rubbed his reddened hand, a wronged look on his face.
"Fine, fine! So stingy! For the sake of tomorrow’s mission, I won’t hold it against you!"
Meanwhile, Shen Qiuyue was intently polishing her High-Energy Dueling Sword, her movements light and swift.
She glanced at Li Chang’an, who wasn’t far away, and spoke calmly.
"Captain, what’s the specific objective for tomorrow’s mission? What Instructor Wei said sounded vague."
Li Chang’an was looking down, inspecting his Saw Chain Sword. He looked up at her words.
"An Alien Martial Artist outpost. The specific scale is unknown.
From what the instructor said, this one won’t be easy. We might be in for a tough fight!"
Shen Qiuyue nodded.
"If that’s the case, can logistics keep up with supplies? If the enemy has superior numbers, we can’t just fight them on pure grit!"
Li Chang’an smiled.
"Don’t worry about that. I’ve already put in a word.
They’re going to resupply us with a batch of advanced equipment before the mission tomorrow.
As for logistics’ efficiency... we’ll just have to play it by ear!"
Han Ruoxi, who was loading an Energy Battery into a device in her hand, couldn’t help but chime in.
"Speaking of logistics, you can’t count on those guys.
Last time I requested a bottle of Electromagnetic Interference Agent, it took them three days to get it to me. I almost missed the battle!"
Sun Yang peeked his head in through the doorway, a protein bar dangling from his mouth.
"Hey, you can’t blame logistics. It’s mainly because we’re at the bottom of the totem pole. We have low resource priority.
The real big shots can probably empty out the supply depot with a wave of their hand. By the time it gets to us newbies, there’s nothing left!"
"Shut your mouth, Sun Yang!" Han Ruoxi shot him a glare.
"I just let you off the hook a minute ago, and now you’re back to stir up trouble!"
"Alright, alright, I’ll stop talking!" Sun Yang raised his hands and retreated back outside the door.
Bai Lin’s voice came from a corner of the room.
"I was just looking up some intel.
Alien Martial Artist outposts generally have complex layouts, usually with traps or defensive systems.
This could be troublesome!"
Li Chang’an walked over to Bai Lin and glanced down at the display on his terminal.
"Can you crack their defensive systems?"
Bai Lin nodded.
"Cracking them is no problem, but I’ll need time.
If things get hairy, you guys will have to buy me some time to work!"
"Understood!" Li Chang’an clapped him on the shoulder.
"We’ll leave that part to you. The rest of us will provide cover!"
Shen Qiuyue sheathed her sword and stood up.
"Since the situation might be complex, we should assign roles in advance.
Captain, do you have a plan?"
Li Chang’an nodded.
"I have a rough breakdown of roles. We’ll go over the details tomorrow morning before we head out.
For now, everyone use this time to get in the right headspace. Don’t get too relaxed!"
"Right!" Shen Qiuyue replied, then walked out of the common room.
Han Ruoxi sat at the table, idly fiddling with the small device in her hand and muttering.
"Fighting and killing every day... When are we ever going to get an easy mission, like a supply escort or something!"
Sun Yang poked his head back in.
"Supply escort? You wish! Escort missions are the ones the high-level corps fight over. When would it ever be our turn?"
Han Ruoxi picked up the device in her hand, pretending she was about to throw it.
"One more word out of you and see if I don’t actually beat you up!"
Sun Yang burst out laughing and quickly ran off.
Li Chang’an stood in the middle of the room, a faint smile playing on his lips as he watched his team bustle about.
He raised his hands and clapped twice, signaling for everyone to be quiet.
"Listen up. Get to bed early tonight.
Assembly is at 0600 sharp tomorrow morning. Don’t be late.
Anyone who’s late will be on punishment detail for three days of extra training after the mission!"
"Got it!" everyone answered in unison, though their tone was a bit playful.
At 5:00 AM, lights in the dormitory area began to switch on one by one as the base was already starting its busy day.
Li Chang’an was the first to sit up in bed. He quickly put on his gear and hung the Saw Chain Sword at his waist.
He rolled his shoulders lightly, then walked into the hallway and kicked open Sun Yang’s door.
"Sun Yang! Get up! Stop lying there like a corpse, it’s almost mission time!"
In bed, Sun Yang rolled over, clutching his blanket, and said groggily.
"Captain, it’s only five... Just let me sleep for ten more minutes, just ten! Please, if the sky falls, I’ll hold it up for you!"
"You can hold up the sky if it falls?" Li Chang’an sneered. He stepped forward, grabbed the blanket, and yanked it off.
"If you dawdle any longer, I’ll drag you out to the training ground and let you bake in the sun!"
"No, no, no! I’m getting up, alright?" Now fully awake, Sun Yang jumped out of bed and started getting dressed, muttering while he yawned.
"So heartless. Our Captain is way too strict..."
Han Ruoxi’s door opened a crack. She poked her head out, her hair still a mess.
"Hey, Captain, can you please not kick doors? You woke me up over here! Can’t we be a little more civilized in this squad, act like an elite team?"
"Civilized?" Li Chang’an shot her a sidelong glance.
