Chapter 634: Their Hunt
Chapter 634: Their Hunt
Lao Er and Ling Er headed straight towards one of the areas that the village head had pointed at earlier after they left the village.
There were many goats and cows that were left to roam and feed, but they were only allowed to do so near the village.
Even though what was edible had become scarce, their owners didn’t want to take the risk of letting them roam in the forests and grass patches.
As they went deeper and deeper towards the forest area, the vegetation around them got thicker.
Lao Er and Ling Er maintained high alert while they looked for any signs of the cultivators from the north.
They didn’t know how long it would take, but they would try their best to accomplish the command of Grand Ancestor Lin.
"Look over here." Lao Er saw some tracks on the ground and he pointed at them.
His experience hunting for food while they were in the cave after the secret realm helped him to be able to spot these tracks.
He glanced at the tracks and figured that they were those of a goat.
It must have somehow broken off from its group.
The steps of the track were further apart than usual and shallow.
A sign that it was running instead of foraging for food.
"Come with me." Lao Er waved at Ling Er and they followed the track of the goat.
They bashed through the foliage and stopped when there were no more tracks.
A ghastly scene with blood smeared all over the bushes and fallen leaves greeted them instead.
Then, there was a trail of blood further out in the distance.
Lao Er glanced at Ling Er and said, "I think we are near."
Ling Er nodded her head at him and they increased their pace.
They used their senses trying to see if they could detect anyone around.
And it wasn’t too far before they sensed something.
Rustle.
Sounds of rustling could be heard in the bushes ahead of them.
Lao Er drew out his sword quietly and he crept towards the bushes, ready to make a strike.
Ling Er followed closely behind him with her sword in her hand.
After he took a few steps, the rustling stopped and a low growl could be heard instead.
A wolf covered in white fur lunged out from the bush with its sharp fangs coming at Lao Er’s throat.
Lao Er was well prepared for it.
He swung his sword up into the air from the ground, unleashing a crescent wave at the wolf.
Splatter.
The crescent wave sliced through the head of the wolf, splitting it into halves.
Blood sprayed into the surroundings and the wolf dropped onto the ground before it could get near Lao Er.
Lao Er frowned and stepped forward towards the body of the wolf with his sword pointed at it.
"It was really a wolf?" He mumbled to himself with disappointment.
He thought that they were close to something when they heard the village head.
But now, it seemed like he might have been wrong about it.
Ling Er came up to him and glanced at the wolf.
She thought about it for a moment and asked, "Have you seen this type of wolf around here before?"
Lao Er glanced at it for a moment and shook his head.
The wolves he had seen so far in the area around Gui Feng had gray fur and were smaller in size.
This wolf with white fur was twice as large as they were.
Maybe they were close to it after all? He thought, but he quickly put his finger up to his lips.
Chatters could be heard approaching.
Ling Er nodded her head and they dragged the body of the wolf and hid it behind the bushes.
After which, they got into cover behind the bushes too.
A few moments passed and two burly men dressed in fur with tattoos on their arms came.
"XiLie, I told you to look after White Fang and not let it run around.
"The Crimson Wolf Lord will be mad if he finds out we left our position to look for your pet." One of the men said to the other with a grievance on his face.
The other man, XiLie, replied to him and said, "HuSai, you are being too anxious.
"What can go wrong?
"Those Da Qian cowards don’t even dare come near to these areas anymore.
"We will find White Fang and get back to our sentry post, no one will know and nothing will happen." XiLie said with a shrug.
HuSai shook his head and he wanted to curse at XiLie but he stopped when the scent of blood entered his nose.
He waved at XiLie for him to be on alert.
But XiLie wasn’t too bothered and said, "It must be White Fang having a meal.
"The instinct for it to hunt is impossible to suppress, just like our instinct to plunder and pillage."
He smirked and rubbed his hands with glee.
Thoughts about how he would ransack Gui Feng City when it fell came into his mind.
"I don’t know, something feels off.
"The blood here was sprayed all over and it doesn’t look like something White Fang would do.
"It goes in for a quick kill rather than doing so...." HuSai said and his gaze followed the trail of blood leading to the bushes.
He was right.
XiLie’s expression turned serious immediately after he heard HuSai.
He drew out his sabre, which was in a crescent shape, and pointed at the bushes where the body of White Fang was.
HuSai nodded his head and drew out his sabre too.
Slowly, HuSai walked towards the bush.
Lao Er, who was nearest to the body of White Fang at the moment, also got ready for it.
When HuSai parted the bushes with one of his hands and peered into them, he gasped when he saw the split head of White Fang inside.
Then, a gust of wind came from his side and a shimmer of light flashed through his face.
Dang!
