Lu Jiuan’s Adam’s apple bobbed at the sight, but a pang of pain shot through his heart. He quickly looked away, only for his gaze to land on the wedding photo of Lin Nian and Shen Feng displayed on a cabinet.
His heart ached even more.

After accompanying Qin Jiao home, Shen Yi washed his hands and prepared to cook, just as he always did. Meanwhile, Qin Jiao sat in the living room, her eyes on some freshly washed honey peaches. They looked delicious, so she picked one up and began to eat. Just then, the phone rang.
It was for Shen Yi.
Qin Jiao called Shen Yi over to take the call. As he listened, his brow slowly furrowed.
After hanging up, Shen Yi said, "The investigation into that last incident is complete. The person who did the sabotage was Lu Jiuan’s uncle. Also, Lu Jiuan went to the South not long ago."
Qin Jiao took a bite of her honey peach. "That man isn’t content with being a minor employee," she said. "He’s always wanted to go into business for himself and get rich, and he’s adept at exploiting any advantage he can find. Oh, right, I saw Shen Feng leave this morning. Lu Jiuan and the others are still at Lin Nian’s place... Can you think of a way to make Shen Feng go back home for a bit?"

Qin Jiao narrowed her eyes. "Meng Lanlan is clueless. Those two could be making eyes at each other, and she probably wouldn’t have any idea. But Shen Feng is different. He can be very perceptive at times and would likely notice something, unless Lu Jiuan and Lin Nian’s acting is absolutely flawless. Still, it would be enough to give them a good scare."
Shen Yi was displeased. "Are you praising Shen Feng?"
"Ah, I’m not praising him. It’s an objective assessment. Besides, it’s not exactly a virtue. Being too perceptive can be a bad thing—case in point, you right now."
Shen Yi was left speechless. Though not exactly pleased, he still turned and made a call, arranging for someone to tell Shen Feng that he had guests at home—more than one, and all supposedly very close with Lin Nian.
That way, the messenger wouldn’t be lying. After all, Meng Lanlan was, on the surface, Lin Nian’s high school classmate.
But in reality, the person truly close to Lin Nian wasn’t Meng Lanlan. It was Lu Jiuan.
When Shen Feng received the message, however, he was puzzled. ’Someone extremely close to Lin Nian? Who could that be?’
He already detested the smell of the paint factory, so he seized the opportunity, making an excuse about a family matter and leaving for the day.
His team leader, however, grumbled to a coworker, "His title as ’Young Master Shen’ isn’t even legitimate, so why’s he acting so high and mighty? He shows up for a shift and takes off less than an hour in."
"Who knows? I just don’t get Boss Shen. It’s one thing to get remarried, but why pick an older woman? And one with baggage, too."
"No, that’s not it. I heard he actually is Boss Shen’s son, and that the current Mrs. Shen was his first love."
They might be on the boss’s payroll, but who doesn’t love a bit of gossip?
But the consensus was that this Young Master Shen had ambitions that far outstripped his abilities. And deep down, it was clear he despised working at the paint factory.
Standing on the balcony, Shen Yi caught sight of Shen Feng rushing home. He hurried back inside to report to Qin Jiao, only to find that she, having eaten her fill, was now fast asleep on the sofa, hugging a throw pillow.
A gentle smile touched his lips. His eyes filled with tenderness as he carried Qin Jiao to the bedroom and tucked her under the covers.
"Jiao Jiao, get some rest," he murmured. "You can’t overexert yourself."
He leaned down to kiss her forehead, then drew the bedroom curtains to block out the sun. Only then did he quietly slip out, gently closing the door behind him.
