Chapter 437: Underground Warehouse
Chapter 437: Chapter 437: Underground Warehouse
It had fallen from Ambrose White.
It looked like a string of wooden keys.
He didn’t know what it was, but thinking of Nina Jacobs, who was still dealing with General Hughes, he had picked it up anyway.
Watching the two vehicles drive off into the distance, Nina Jacobs turned to Wayne Warner and said,
"Go wait for my signal near the base’s main gate.
Make sure no one sees you."
"Okay."
Wayne Warner nodded, and the two of them disappeared into the night in different directions.
After drinking a bottle of Invisibility Potion, Nina Jacobs used her Speed Element Superpower to quickly return to the base’s side gate.
The previous guards seemed to have been replaced by a new shift.
Nina had no choice but to climb the wall at a secluded spot near the side gate.
With the enhancement of her Earth Element and Gold Element Superpowers, she landed unharmed on the ground inside, even with the wall’s top lined with dense Gold Spikes.
She let out a small sigh of relief.
’Now I just have to find a way into the underground tunnel.’
The entrance to the underground tunnel was very close to the side gate.
A large, face-recognition-locked door stood between them.
But Nina didn’t plan on entering from there; it would be too easy to get caught.
She activated her Speed Element Superpower and ran through the darkness toward the correction bay.
She planned to go down again through the shop’s ground-level entrance.
Nina noticed the base was now swarming with guards, along with some members of the Shadow Legion.
They seemed to be searching for something.
The correction bay was also surrounded, layer by layer.
But it was still noisy inside, and she could faintly hear someone crying.
"It was Reinhard Caldwell! It was Reinhard Caldwell!
Even if you have to tear this place apart, find Reinhard Caldwell for me!
If you can’t find him, I’ll make everyone in this base die with Ambrose White!"
Arcadia White wailed, hunched over a corpse that was mangled beyond recognition.
Standing beside her was General Hughes, his expression grim.
Anselm Hughes never imagined his brother-in-law, Ambrose White, would die in Lornwood Base.
He knew that Ambrose had run over and killed Reinhard Caldwell’s daughter.
But he hadn’t paid it much mind at the time because Reinhard never made a scene about it.
Besides, he had already sent him away to the correction bay.
A Wind Element Superpower User with no real power—he was certain the man couldn’t cause any trouble.
How could he have known that Reinhard Caldwell had been holding a grudge all this time?
And that he would even dare to kill Ambrose White?
"General Hughes, we couldn’t find Commander Langdon."
Wyatt Holden’s hair was a mess, and his face was etched with panic.
’Evander Langdon, the man they’d kept locked up here, was actually gone?!’
"What did you say? And Evelyn Carter?"
Anselm Hughes was even more incredulous upon hearing this.
At that moment, no one noticed a flicker of presence in a dark corner.
’Looks like they haven’t noticed the underground tunnel yet. This is the perfect chance.’
Nina quickly arrived at the shop she had passed through earlier.
Using her Superpowers, she once again successfully reached the underground tunnel.
The underground tunnel was currently unsupervised.
Redmayne Spencer and the others had killed all the guards on duty, and the drivers, at a complete loss, were gathered in the distance, discussing something among themselves.
Nina reached the door to the underground warehouse and saw that the alarm, which should have gone off at a single touch, had indeed been destroyed.
’Now all that’s left is to use my Gold Element and Earth Element Superpowers.’
She used her Gold Element Superpower to pick the lock and her Earth Element Superpower to silently create a narrow opening in the door.
A look of delight crossed Nina’s face.
’While invisible, I actually managed to get into the underground warehouse?!’
But she was short on time. Nina quickly scanned her surroundings.
Inside the warehouse, wooden robots were still continuously packaging grain supplies with vacuum sealers.
Wyatt Holden had said that human nature was greedy, so the guards were only allowed to stand duty outside the warehouse.
That was why only these wooden robots were inside.
Each wooden robot had a pair of hollow eye sockets with no eyeballs.
Nina found the black, empty sockets unsettling, so she simply used a Gold Blade to sever the nearby power supply.
However, to her bewilderment, although the vacuum-sealing machines stopped, the wooden robots did not.
’They aren’t powered by electricity?’
Nina destroyed the wooden robot closest to her.
Inside its wooden shell were sets of densely packed wooden gears.
The gears were still turning.
Nina also saw black threads inside. It turned out they weren’t electrical wires, but cotton threads connecting the various sets of gears.
In the center of the tangle of cotton threads, Nina saw a sealed glass vial.
Inside the vial was a wood chip about the size of an adult’s fingernail.
When she picked up the vial, the gears that had been turning suddenly stopped?!
’How is that possible?’
Nina stared at the object inside the glass vial.
After destroying the remaining automatons, she found that, sure enough, each one had a small wood chip like this inside its body.
’Is this... powering these automatons?’
That was Nina’s first thought.
But she knew her time was running out, so she collected all the wood chips first.
Only then did she quickly start gathering the supplies.
After using her system inventory’s One-Click Collection a few times, Nina realized she had only collected less than a third of the supplies here.
More than ten minutes passed before she had cleared the place out.
Just as she reached the entrance, a Little Zombie Rat she had left in the ventilation duct detected the situation outside.
Someone was entering the underground tunnel from the main entrance.
’Damn it.’
Nina’s heart sank.
It was Wyatt Holden, and he had brought men with him.
’It seems they’ve already found out about the side gate. If they just walk a little further and turn the corner, they’ll see the bodies of the guards and figure out about the warehouse.’
The Invisibility Potion only had fifteen minutes left. She had to get out of this empty warehouse first.
Otherwise, once the effect wore off, she would have nowhere to hide.
Just then, Wyatt Holden’s men discovered the bodies of the guards.
Wyatt Holden immediately had a bad feeling.
He rushed to the warehouse and found the lock completely destroyed.
Both the electronic system and the mechanical lock were useless.
After pushing the warehouse door open, his heart sank into his stomach.
The warehouse was completely empty.
Even the supplies on the consoles in front of the robotic automatons had been taken clean.
"Bring all those drivers over here!"
Wyatt Holden was trembling all over.
The thing he had feared most had happened.
With the warehouse door wide open, Nina had already slipped out, hugging the wall.
She now stood behind a pallet not far away, only two meters from Wyatt Holden.
’Eleven minutes left.’
Nina saw that the drivers in the distance had all been brought over.
Including the "decoys."
And Wyatt Holden was standing right where she had come down from.
’It looks like I’m trapped.’
"Are you saying Commander Langdon was taken hostage,
and Nina Jacobs was here too?!"
Wyatt Holden asked in astonishment from nearby.
"Yes, Supervisor Holden. At the time, Commander Langdon had a knife to his throat. Captain Jacobs didn’t dare make a move.
But right after that, Captain Jacobs chased after them. She didn’t linger here at all."
Mr. Jameson, the driver, replied, and the other drivers all chimed in to agree.
Nina hadn’t expected the drivers to stick to such a story.
But she quickly understood why.
’They’re afraid General Hughes will punish them. If it was just a doctor being taken hostage, they could have easily stopped those people. But with Commander Langdon taken hostage, the situation is completely different. This story is just for their own self-preservation.’
