Chapter 418 - 222: Picking Up a "Profound Ice Jade Lion
First, he had to take the little lion cub he'd found to a wildlife rescue station.
Led by the police car, they drove toward the next highway exit.
The little lion cub seemed tired. It curled up in the passenger seat and slowly closed its eyes, its little paw still unconsciously clutching the corner of Yang Qi's clothes.
Yang Qi slowed down, trying to make the drive as smooth as possible.
...
Guided by the police car, they exited the highway and entered the nearest county, Qingyuan County.
They didn't go into the county seat, but instead stopped in front of a courtyard in a relatively secluded area. A sign on it read, "Qingyuan County Temporary Wildlife Shelter and Rescue Point."
The courtyard was quite large, with a few rows of single-story buildings surrounded by an iron fence.
The Forestry Bureau staff had already called ahead, so the rescue point's director and a veterinarian were waiting at the gate.
Everyone was stunned when they saw the police car and the SUV that followed. They were even more shocked to see Yang Qi get out of the driver's seat, with a fluffy lion cub trailing right behind him, sticking close to his leg.
"It really is a lion..."
"It's so young. Where did it come from?"
"It seems really attached to that young man, doesn't it?"
"..."
The veterinarian at the rescue point was a thin, spectacled man in his fifties, surnamed Zhou.
He hurried forward to examine the little lion cub, but it immediately ducked behind Yang Qi. It peeked out with just half its head, its amber eyes filled with wariness as a low, threatening growl rumbled in its throat.
"Dr. Zhou, please wait. The little one is frightened and wary of strangers."
Yang Qi quickly explained, stroking the cub's head reassuringly. "Let me have a word with it."
With that, he squatted down, looked into the cub's eyes, and used his Basic Spirit Communication Technique. 'Don't be afraid,' he said gently. 'This man is a doctor. He's here to give you a check-up, look at the injury on your leg, and give you something good to eat. I'll stay right here with you. I promise I won't leave.'
The little lion cub looked at Yang Qi, then at Veterinarian Zhou, who held a stethoscope and had a kind face that still made the cub instinctively nervous. It hesitated for a moment and let out a soft whimper. It didn't retreat, but it didn't move forward either. Instead, it simply nuzzled its head against Yang Qi's hand. The meaning was obvious.
'As long as you're here, I'm not afraid.'
Veterinarian Zhou and the others clicked their tongues in amazement.
It wasn't that they hadn't seen intelligent animals before, but for an untamed lion cub to show such strong dependence and trust in someone it had just met was incredibly rare.
"Advisor Yang, what should we do...?" Veterinarian Zhou was in a bind.
'The examination has to be done, but the little one isn't cooperating. We can't just stand here at a stalemate.'
Yang Qi thought for a moment before saying to Veterinarian Zhou, "Dr. Zhou, how about this? Let's do the examination out here. We can find a quiet spot with good sunlight."
"I'll hold it. You just need to be gentle and quick. The main issue is that it doesn't want to leave my side, and it doesn't like being surrounded by so many people."
"Alright, we'll do it your way." Veterinarian Zhou readily agreed.
He too had noticed the cub's special attachment to Yang Qi.
And so, a clean mat was laid out on a patch of open ground in a sunny, sheltered corner of the courtyard.
Yang Qi sat down holding the little lion cub, cradling it in his arms and gently holding it still.
Bai Wan, Leopard, and Hu Zi all stayed in the car. Xiaojiu was perched on a low wall nearby, watching, while Liu Fu also remained in the vehicle.
Veterinarian Zhou put on a pair of gloves. With his flashlight, stethoscope, and other tools in hand, he began a quick examination with Yang Qi's assistance.
The little lion cub was stiff at first, but with Yang Qi's constant reassurance and soft whispers, it gradually relaxed. It only flinched occasionally when its wound or a sensitive spot was touched, letting out an aggrieved whimper. Its large, watery eyes would look up at Yang Qi, as if tattling on the doctor.
"Slight muscle sprain in the right hind leg and a few scrapes, but it's nothing serious. We'll disinfect it, apply some medicine, and it should be fine after a few days of rest."
"It has some fleas and parasites, so it'll need to be treated. It's a bit dehydrated and malnourished, but nothing too severe."
"He's male, about three months old. Overall, aside from being frightened and having minor injuries, there are no life-threatening illnesses or serious wounds."
Veterinarian Zhou quickly gave his preliminary diagnosis.
The Forestry Bureau staff and the police officers all breathed a sigh of relief.
'As long as the cub itself isn't in serious trouble, the subsequent procedures will be much simpler.'
Next came the deworming treatment and the disinfection and dressing of its wounds.
The deworming medication was oral, mixed into a bit of meat paste. Yang Qi fed it to the cub himself. Although the little lion was resistant to the medicinal taste, it obediently ate it after some coaxing from Yang Qi.
Applying the disinfectant stung a little, and the cub squirmed, trying to get away. But Yang Qi's soft words calmed it down, and Veterinarian Zhou was able to finish the treatment nimbly.
Throughout the entire process, the little lion cub displayed an extraordinary level of trust and dependence on Yang Qi. It remained wary of anyone else's touch, but as long as Yang Qi was present, it managed to cooperate.
When the treatment was finished, Veterinarian Zhou wiped the sweat from his brow and sighed in admiration at Yang Qi.
"Advisor Yang, I'd only heard your name before, but I didn't truly understand your abilities. Today has been a real eye-opener. I'm completely convinced!"
