"You’re in the right room." Alex clapped Lanuo on the back and gave him a push, introducing him to Gu Ning and Barto.
"This is Lanuo. He’s the doctor I specially brought from Zone 5 to treat Ningning."
Hearing he was a doctor Alex had specially invited, Gu Ning managed a smile and greeted him politely. "Hello, Doctor Lanuo."
Lanuo’s weary eyes instantly brightened. He raised a hand. "He-hello."
But when he heard her hoarse, grating voice, he snapped back to his senses and fumbled in his pocket for his glasses, hastily putting them on.
"The right room?" Lanuo stared at the little female before him for a moment, then sniffed the air around "her." He tilted his head and whispered to Alex, "You really got a Mimic Mixed Species to stick by your side? This one’s a high-level one, too."
’Aside from its voice and scent, the disguise is nearly perfect. It almost fooled even me. No wonder Alex had to confirm with me over and over again.’
’That explains why the data Alex gave me was so strange. If it’s a Mimic Mixed Species, then it all makes sense.’
’But... something still feels off.’
Hearing the words "Mimic Mixed Species," the smile on Gu Ning’s lips vanished. She sighed and slumped back against Barto’s shoulder.
Alex’s brows furrowed slightly. "Are you still half-asleep?"
Lanuo stared at the "little Mixed Breed" and said distractedly, "Yeah, I’m still a bit tired."
Barto snorted. "This doctor you found isn’t all that great." He gently laid Gu Ning back on the bed and tucked her in. "I’ll go get you something to eat. You need to eat something to get your strength back."
Gu Ning nodded.
Barto tucked the corners of her blanket in, then stood and walked out.
The two men standing at the door stepped aside to let him pass.
Barto paused beside Lanuo, about to say something to this dog, but when he saw the chill clinging to him and the water droplets on his clothes and hair, he held his tongue.
’He’s the doctor Alex called, so he’s probably from Zone 5 too. It must have taken a lot of energy to get here within a day. As long as his mind is clear when he’s treating Gu Ning, it’s fine.’
Barto looked away, strode off, and closed the door behind him to keep the cold air from seeping into the room.
Lanuo watched the door close and said to Alex, "Did that fox just give me a dirty look?"
"He’s like that with everyone," Alex said flatly.
"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH..."
Gu Ning’s coughing pulled both men’s attention back to her. Alex strode quickly to her bedside.
Gu Ning was coughing violently, an uncomfortable blockage of phlegm rattling in her throat. It surged up with every cough, forcing her to push herself upright.
Alex picked up the trash can by the bed and gently rubbed her back.
When her coughing fit subsided, he was about to reach for some water, but Lanuo beat him to it, pouring a glass of warm water and holding it out to Gu Ning.
"Thank you," Gu Ning said hoarsely as she took the glass.
Lanuo crouched down, his eyes filled with curiosity as he sized her up.
Gu Ning glanced at Lanuo while sipping her water, not particularly bothered by him observing her as if she were a Mimic Mixed Species.
’Alex probably didn’t tell this doctor beforehand to avoid exposing my identity as a female. But even if he didn’t say anything before, he’ll have to soon. Alex won’t let him treat me as a Mimic Mixed Species.’
’I can’t even take medicine meant for normal Beastmen, let alone medicine for Mixed Breeds.’
However, before she had even finished her water, Lanuo suddenly grabbed her wrist. "You..."
"COUGH—" Startled by his sudden movement, Gu Ning’s hand trembled, and she nearly coughed a spray of water into his face.
Alex immediately took the glass from her, patting her back gently. He said to Lanuo, "Don’t be so jumpy. You’re scaring her."
Lanuo took a slow breath, quickly composed himself, and shot Alex a "you just wait" glare. He squeezed Gu Ning’s wrist. "I’m just checking her temperature and pulse."
With that, he immediately switched into doctor mode, seriously examining Gu Ning’s condition.
Seeing the doctor’s expression suddenly turn serious and professional, holding her hand with an air of profound expertise, Gu Ning’s tense body gradually relaxed.
’Looking at him like this... he seems like a very capable doctor.’
Lanuo maintained his solemn facade for a few seconds to salvage his image, then released the little female’s hand. He felt her forehead for her temperature, then placed a large hand on her abdomen. "Cough once."
Gu Ning coughed as he instructed.
Lanuo: "Open your mouth."
Gu Ning opened her mouth.
Lanuo gently held her chin, inspecting it closely. "A little wider..."
Gu Ning’s eyes darted toward him as she tried her best to open her mouth wider.
"Her tonsils are inflamed, too." After finishing his initial diagnosis of Gu Ning, Lanuo straightened up and looked at Alex. "Who are the doctors that have been treating her? Call them over for a meeting."
After speaking, he gave Alex a subtle kick and tilted his head slightly, signaling for him to step outside.
"I’m going to step out for a bit." Alex got a bolster pillow for Gu Ning, placed it behind her back, and patted her head. "I’ll be right outside the door."
Gu Ning: "Okay."

"How is she?" Alex asked in a low voice after closing the door.
Lanuo looked down at himself, ran a hand through his messy hair, and began to pace back and forth with his hands on his hips.
"Why aren’t you saying anything?" Alex asked.
"You..." Lanuo pointed a finger at Alex, about to curse him out, but remembering the little female was just on the other side of the door, he paused. He lowered his voice. "You’re a real ’good brother’!"
Alex said, "What?"
"What do you think?!" Lanuo pointed a hand at the door. "You brought her from Zone 19?"
Alex: "Yes."
Lanuo, thinking of the Beastman soldiers he had seen on the way here, asked, "She’s with the military?"
Alex: "Yes."
Lanuo: "And you’re planning to take her back to Zone 5?"
Alex paused for a second. "Yes."
Lanuo started yanking at his hair again. "Are you trying to make trouble for yourself or for me? Spring is almost here. If Alihot gets a hold of you, do you really think you can get away?"
Alex said, "Weren’t you the one who was so eager for me to fight him before? Why the lack of confidence in me now?"
Lanuo: "Is your situation now the same as it was before?!"
Alex: "Keep your voice down."
Lanuo glanced at the door and leaned closer to him. "First of all, this cute little female is from the military. Even if you manage to win a spot as her mate, you’ll only be one of them."
Alex’s tone turned unhappy. "What are you trying to say?"
Lanuo: "Do I have to spell it out for you? The military has countless high-quality males for her to choose from. Of course, I admit you’re not bad, but... well, you get it."
Alex took a deep breath. "I get it. And then?"
Lanuo: "The fact that you’re taking her to Zone 5 means she must like you quite a bit and might be willing to help you. But honestly, the gap between you and Alihot is just too big right now."
’Although I’m still not sure what this little female’s exact status is, it doesn’t matter. Anyone who can go to Zone 19 must have a rank and background that can’t be underestimated.’
Alex stopped replying. He crossed his arms and stared at Lanuo, waiting to see what other infuriating things he had to say. Best to let him get it all out at once and be done with it.
