Chapter 263 - 237: Why Aren’t You Following the Rules?
Chapter 263: Chapter 237: Why Aren’t You Following the Rules?
The scent inside the car made Barto’s expression turn ugly.
He hauled Gu Ning out of the vehicle.
"How is it?" Gu Ning whispered.
"Don’t talk," Barto said, looking down at her disguise. "The moment you open your mouth, you’ll give the whole thing away."
Gu Ning shut her mouth.
"It’s not bad," Barto said, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "You actually look more like a Wolf Clan Mixed Breed than before."
She reeked of wolf.
"I made the ears. The ones they make are trash," Barto emphasized, glancing at the wolf ears on top of her head.
Gu Ning gave him a thumbs-up.
Then, as if remembering something, she whispered, "You guys... planned this... beforehand?"
Barto replied, "Not a plan. Just a contingency."
’He didn’t want her smelling like any other beast.’
"What are you still doing here? You can’t be with us." Vine got out from behind Gu Ning and pulled her over to him.
"What’s the rush?" Barto glanced at the inspectors ahead, who were being held up by Leo and his men. That particular dog was a real handful; they wouldn’t be able to shake him off anytime soon.
"Wolf Team."
Just then, Vine’s subordinates came over, bringing Cook with them.
The young wolves’ eyes lit up when they saw Gu Ning wearing a muzzle and the same combat uniform as them.
If they hadn’t known that part of their mission was to escort this little Mixed Breed, they would have thought their boss had successfully recruited her onto their team.
But after seeing the wolf ears on her head, they all drew in a sharp breath internally.
’Even though they knew the little Mixed Breed was a Wolf Clan Mixed Breed, and that she was disguised as Kaper to infiltrate their pack, something still felt off.’
"WOOF!" Cook excitedly pushed his way to the front, but when he sniffed the scent of Vine’s glands on Gu Ning, his wide grin immediately vanished. He let out a discontented whimper and nuzzled against her.
He tried to lick her, but the muzzle got in the way. After straining for a while, his tongue managed to barely touch her.
Vine and the others didn’t stop Cook from getting close to Gu Ning. Gu Ning was currently disguised as Kaper, and Kaper and Cook were like brothers, so such intimacy was normal. Besides, Cook’s Mixed Breed scent couldn’t cover up the wolf smell on Gu Ning anyway.
Barto’s gaze swept over the group of wolves. Seeing that Gu Ning and Cook had both changed into the Wolf Team’s uniform, he felt completely out of place, especially with his conspicuous red hair.
He was currently wearing the uniform of Seth’s team.
Barto looked toward the convoy up ahead, where Leo and his men were running interference with the inspectors from Zone 15.
"Come on, come on, check us thoroughly."
At that moment, Leo was being carried by two of his subordinates, positioned horizontally to block the inspectors. He shoved a pile of passes into the lead inspector’s hands.
Seeing this, the leader shot a look at his companions.
The moment those inspectors moved, the Dog Team immediately went to block them.
"Check our team first!" Leo complained. "Can’t you see how badly I’m hurt? I’m waiting to get into Zone 15 for treatment!"
The leader frowned slightly. "I am inspecting."
Leo said, "You’re just one dog, and you’re too slow. I mean, who are you people from Zone 15 putting on this big show for? We’ve been fighting Mutant Species all night. We’re tired and hungry, so hurry it up!"
"If it weren’t for the fact that we’re from the same clan, I’d file a complaint against you lot, one way or another."
Seeing that these Dog Clan soldiers were blocking his way, the lead inspector didn’t want to start a conflict with these dogs from the Military Department, so he patiently distributed the passes to his companions.
Halfway through the inspection, a colleague with a grim expression walked up to his ear and whispered, "Chief, a lot of these passes are ones we just checked."
The leader shoved the passes in his hand into his colleague’s, pushed aside the Beastman blocking him, and walked straight to the next vehicle.
A Dog Team member moved to block him, starting to shove the other inspectors to keep them from getting near the vehicle. This made the lead Beastman even more certain that the person they were looking for was in that car.
"Hey, hey, what do you think you’re doing?" Leo feigned anger. "Why aren’t you following procedure?"
"Get out of the car!" the leader said coldly, knocking on the car door.
Seth rolled down the window and handed out his pass.
The lead Beastman immediately spotted the small Mixed Breed sitting in the passenger seat. ’Just as I thought.’
"Get out for inspection. This is your only warning. Don’t make us use force."
Seth turned to the "little Mixed Breed" in the passenger seat. "Little Boss, let’s get out. The inspection will be over soon."
Then he said to the inspectors who had gathered around, "Watch your tone. Don’t scare our Little Boss."
After speaking, he got out of the car with "Gu Ning."
BEEP!
The lead Beastman saw the scanner display "PASS" and looked up at the little Mixed Breed before him. He sized him up doubtfully and said, "Take off the mask."
Seth put a hand out in front of "Gu Ning." "His pass already cleared. What more do you want?"
The lead Beastman shot a look at two inspectors beside him, who immediately moved forward and restrained Seth.
"If you obstruct the checkpoint inspection again, we’ll detain all of you," the lead Beastman warned.
Seth and the other young wolves’ faces immediately darkened. They all moved to shield "Gu Ning," blocking the inspectors from getting close.
Seeing their reaction only confirmed the leader’s suspicions. He raised his hand, about to order his Beastmen to move in, when a muffled, young male voice sounded from behind the group of wolves. "Seth, move."
Seth was slightly taken aback by the voice, which was completely different from Gu Ning’s, but he quickly recovered. He stepped aside, revealing the figure of the small Mixed Breed behind him.
"Take off the mask and hat." The lead Beastman stared at this little Mixed Breed, whose build and temperament didn’t quite match that of a typical Dwarf hybrid. His suspicion grew. ’Is it really a female disguised as a Mixed Breed, like the higher-ups said?’
’It’s too calm. The other Beastmen are about to start a brawl, and it’s just standing there, not moving.’
Under the watchful eyes of all the Beastmen, "Gu Ning" first took off the hat, revealing slightly messy, long black hair and grayish-white beast ears on top.
Barto, hidden in the crowd, narrowed his eyes, watching "Gu Ning’s" every move.
The inspectors’ eyes lit up with anticipation.
"Gu Ning" glanced at the group of beasts and slowly pulled down the mask.
A delicate, but clearly male, face was revealed to all the Beastmen.
Barto breathed a sigh of relief. ’Thank goodness. They didn’t use Gu Ning’s face.’
Seth’s eyes widened. He stared at the face he had never seen before, a flicker of confusion crossing his mind.
’Does Little Boss really look like this? Something feels... off.’
’Even though I know this guy is a Mimic Mixed Species, he’s disguised as Little Boss right now, so the face under the mask should be identical to Little Boss’s.’
Seeing the little Mixed Breed’s face, the lead Beastman’s expression turned to one of disappointment. ’So he really is a Dwarf hybrid, not a female at all.’
The face even had the beast-like markings that appeared from a high degree of Mixed Breed degradation.
He scanned him with the instrument several more times, and after confirming he was just a Mixed Breed, he had no choice but to let them go and move on to inspect the next vehicle.
The soldiers from the convoy behind them had all gotten out of their vehicles. They were crowded together on the main road, their expressions a mixture of irritation and impatience. They looked like a tough crowd.
Seeing this scene, the lead inspector knew this was a different team. He didn’t get too close, simply ordering their leader to come forward and having his subordinates check their passes one by one.
"What’s taking so long with the inspection?"
Vine stepped forward, his tone unpleasant.
"There are a lot of you," the leader replied dismissively, his gaze sweeping back and forth across the group of Wolf Clan Beastmen. Suddenly, he spotted a much smaller, slender figure in the crowd and immediately strode quickly toward it.
