Unexpected Second Chance at Love

Chapter 1039: Only for My Wife

Chapter 1039: Only for My Wife

Lu Tian had made one thing perfectly clear.

He wouldn’t leave Yue Ling’s office until she properly sanitized him.

And by his standards, a few innocent kisses were nowhere near enough.

Yue Ling had initially laughed at his ridiculous excuse.

Unfortunately, Lu Tian had proven remarkably persistent. Somewhere between his teasing whispers and affectionate kisses, she had forgotten all about the unfinished documents waiting on her desk.

His mouth was everywhere—her throat, her collarbone, the sensitive spot behind her ear that made her gasp.

She bit down on her lip, determined to stay silent even as heat pooled low in her belly.

"Let me hear you," he murmured against her skin.

"No," she breathed, even as her hands pulled him closer, nails dragging across his shoulders.

His shirt long discarded the moment he told her to sanitize him.

He made it his mission then, to break her resolve. His hands mapped every curve, his mouth leaving marks along her throat and chest—deliberate brands that would bloom purple by evening.

She arched into him, her body betraying what her voice wouldn’t, and when he finally entered her, she had to press her fist against her mouth to muffle the moan that threatened to escape.

They moved together with desperate intensity, the winter light painting them in shades of gold and shadow.

His fingers dug into her hips, holding her steady as he drove into her again and again, and she wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper.

The pleasure built like a storm, and when it finally broke, she buried her face in his shoulder, her cry muffled against his skin as her body shuddered beneath him.

He followed moments later, his own release shaking through him as he collapsed against her.

Lu Tian lifted his head and finally noticed how exhausted she had become; the afternoon sunlight had shifted across the floor-to-ceiling windows.

He looked down at his wife resting beneath him on the white couch.

Her cheeks were flushed, her breathing uneven, and several strands of dark hair clung to her temples.

A faint crease formed between his brows.

He had gotten carried away.

Again.

Lu Tian sighed inwardly.

Lowering his head, he pressed a tender kiss against her forehead.

"Are you alright?"

Yue Ling slowly opened her eyes. She stared at him then narrowed her eyes.

"What do you think?"

His lips twitched.

"I think my wife needs some rest."

"How observant of you, Mr. Lu."

He chuckled.

She gave him another glare, though her exhaustion considerably weakened the effect.

Lu Tian gently brushed the loose strands of hair away from her face.

"Rest for a while."

Yue Ling closed her eyes.

"Whose fault is that?"

"Mine."

His immediate admission made her open one eye.

He smiled.

"Entirely mine."

She scoffed softly.

"At least you know."

Lu Tian kissed her forehead again before reluctantly moving away.

As much as he wanted to remain close to her, he knew she was tired.

There was no need to exhaust her further. Besides, they would be going home together later.

The thought brought a faint, satisfied smile to his lips.

He could wait.

For now.

"Thank you, wife."

Yue Ling turned her head toward him.

"For what?"

He looked at her with complete seriousness.

"For sanitizing me."

Silence.

Yue Ling stared at him.

Then grabbed a nearby cushion and threw it at his chest.

"Lu Tian!"

He caught it effortlessly.

A low laugh escaped him.

"Yes, wife?"

"You’re absolutely shameless!"

"Only for you."

She groaned and covered her face with both hands.

Of all the men in Imperial, how had she ended up marrying the most unreasonable one?

And worse—

Why did she find him so endearing?

Yue Ling sighed.

At least her office was soundproof.

That was one small mercy.

After resting for several minutes, Yue Ling finally forced herself to sit up. She glanced toward the clock. Her eyes widened.

"Good heavens..."

Lu Tian looked over.

"What?"

"Look at the time!"

He glanced at the clock.

Then back at her.

"It’s 4 pm."

Yue Ling stared at him incredulously.

"I still have work!"

He shrugged.

"It can wait."

"And you have work. Why are you still here?"

Lu Tian smiled.

"You’re more important."

"You... My goodness. What am I going to do with you?"

Yue Ling muttered and forced herself to sit up. Exhaustion weighed on her limbs as she reached for her scattered clothes.

Her fingers fumbled with buttons and zippers, her body still humming with aftershocks.

She smoothed her hair, checked her reflection in the window, and tried to look like someone who hadn’t just been thoroughly ravished on her office couch.

Lu Tian smiled and watched her for a moment before retrieving his own clothes.

He pulled on his pants, then paused, staring down at his clothes with an expression of profound betrayal.

By the time Yue Ling had finished straightening her blouse, he had already put on his pants.

However, instead of reaching for his shirt, he stood motionless beside the couch.

His dark eyes were fixed on the discarded garments.

More specifically—

His dress shirt.

His suit jacket.

And his overcoat.

The expression on his face was murderous.

Yue Ling followed his gaze. When she saw what he was murdering with his eyes, she burst into laughter.

"What now?"

Lu Tian didn’t answer immediately. He continued glaring at the clothes as though they had personally offended him.

Finally, he sighed.

"I need to call my assistant."

Yue Ling blinked.

"Why?"

"To bring me another suit."

She stared at him.

"...What?"

Lu Tian gestured toward the garments.

"I’m not wearing those."

Yue Ling slowly looked at the clothes.

Then back at her husband.

"Tian."

"Hm?"

"You’re serious?"

"Very."

His brows drew together. His expression grave and serious.

"They’ve committed a crime against me."

Yue Ling pressed her lips together.

She had almost forgotten.

Ji Chu Hua’s perfume.

The very reason her husband had insisted on being sanitized in the first place.

She shook her head.

"Tian, you do realize that you’ve already taken them off?"

"Yes."

"And that whatever perfume you smelled earlier is hardly going to hurt you?"

"I don’t care."

He glared murderously at the clothes again.

"I refuse to wear it."

Yue Ling stared at him in disbelief.

This was the same man who could make million-dollar decisions without blinking.

The same man whose mere presence could silence an entire boardroom.

Yet here he was, standing shirtless in her office, refusing to wear an expensive tailored suit because another woman’s perfume might have gotten onto it.

She almost laughed again.

Instead, she placed one hand on her hip.

"Tian. You do not need to call your assistant."

He looked at her.

"Do you know where you are?"

His brows drew together.

"Of course."

Yue Ling tilted her head.

"And do you know who I am?"

Lu Tian’s frown deepened. He studied her as though she had suddenly asked him the strangest question in the world.

"You’re my wife."

Yue Ling closed her eyes. She inhaled deeply.

Then opened them again.

"Yes, husband. I’m your wife."

He nodded.

"But I’m also a fashion designer."

Lu Tian blinked.

Yue Ling spread her arms, gesturing toward the spacious office.

"And you’re standing inside a fashion company."

Silence.

She waited.

Lu Tian stared at her.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then—

"Oh."

Yue Ling threw her hands up.

"Finally!"

Lu Tian’s expression changed.

The realization was almost comical.

He had been so preoccupied with getting rid of the offending clothes that he had completely forgotten where he was.

De L’amour.

One of the most renowned fashion companies in the world.

Owned by his wife.

A woman who had spent years designing clothing and overseeing entire collections.

Of course she would have access to men’s formalwear.

Lu Tian suddenly laughed.

Yue Ling stared at him.

"What’s so funny?"

"Nothing."

He shook his head.

"I forgot."

"Clearly."

His laughter deepened.

Yue Ling crossed her arms.

"Honestly, Mr. Lu. Sometimes I wonder how you manage to run Lu Corps."

Lu Tian stepped toward her.

"With great difficulty, apparently."

She snorted.

He slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her close.

Then lowered his head and kissed her.

"Thank you, wife."

Yue Ling smiled against his lips.

"You’re welcome."

He drew back slightly.

"But make sure it’s black."

She blinked.

"What?"

"The suit."

He spoke with complete seriousness.

"Black."

Yue Ling stared at him.

Then burst into laughter.

"Of course."

Lu Tian raised an eyebrow.

"I’m not particularly fond of other colors."

"I know."

She shook her head, smiling helplessly.

"Believe me, husband. I’ve noticed."

Almost every suit he owned was black.

Even his casual wardrobe seemed determined to avoid anything remotely colorful.

She sometimes wondered whether the man considered navy blue an adventurous choice.

"Don’t worry," she assured him. "I’ll find you something suitable."

Lu Tian smiled.

"Good."

Yue Ling gently pushed him away.

"Now let me make a call."

Yue Ling walked toward her desk.

But before reaching the phone, she glanced back at the man.

Lu Tian was still standing beside the couch.

Shirtless.

His broad shoulders and defined muscles were completely exposed beneath the afternoon light.

He appeared perfectly comfortable.

Far too comfortable.

Yue Ling paused.

Then looked toward the office door.

A thought crossed her mind.

She glanced around the room until her eyes settled on a folded throw blanket resting over the armchair. Without a word, she retrieved it.

Lu Tian watched curiously as she approached.

"What’s that for?"

Yue Ling handed him the blanket.

"Here."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

She smiled sweetly.

"Cover yourself."

Lu Tian glanced down at his bare chest then back at her.

"Am I cold?"

Yue Ling laughed.

"No."

"Then?"

She stepped closer and gently pressed the blanket against him.

"Because I prefer to be the only one who gets to see you shirtless."

Lu Tian blinked.

For a moment, he simply stared at her. Soon, a slow smile spread across his lips.

"Oh?"

Yue Ling raised an eyebrow.

"Is there a problem?"

"Not at all."

He chuckled.

"I didn’t realize my wife was so possessive."

She tilted her head.

"Shouldn’t I be?"

Lu Tian’s smile deepened.

"Absolutely."

He accepted the blanket and draped it over his shoulders.

"Anything else, Mrs. Lu?"

Yue Ling studied him then nodded approvingly.

"Much better."

He laughed.

She turned toward her desk and picked up the telephone.

After a few seconds, the call connected.

"Boss?"

Liu Shan’s familiar voice sounded from the other end.

"Liu Shan, I need you to do something."

"Of course. What is it?"

"Have someone from the men’s collection bring a black suit to my office."

There was a pause.

"...A black suit?"

"Yes."

Another pause.

"May I ask what size?"

Yue Ling glanced toward Lu Tian.

Then calmly gave him the measurements.

Liu Shan fell silent.

For several seconds, nothing came through the receiver.

Yue Ling raised an eyebrow.

"Liu Shan?"

"Boss..."

His voice sounded unusually strained.

"Is that for Mr. Lu?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Then—

"I see."

Yue Ling frowned.

"What’s wrong?"

"Nothing!"

His answer came far too quickly.

"Absolutely nothing, Boss."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Then why do you sound strange?"

"I don’t!"

He cleared his throat.

"I’ll have the suit delivered immediately."

"Thank you."

"Of course."

The call ended.

Yue Ling slowly lowered the receiver. She stared at it for a moment before letting out a sigh.

"That man has been acting strange all afternoon."

From the couch, Lu Tian glanced toward her.

"Has he?"

"Mm."

She turned around.

"He looked like he’d seen a ghost earlier."

Lu Tian’s expression remained perfectly indifferent.

"Perhaps he did."

Yue Ling laughed.

"Don’t be ridiculous."

Lu Tian merely smiled.

He knew exactly what had frightened Liu Shan.

And he had no intention of explaining it.

Not yet.

A few minutes later—

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Yue Ling looked toward the door.

"Come in."

Nothing happened.

She frowned.

Another moment passed.

Then Liu Shan’s voice sounded from outside.

"Boss, I brought the suit."

Yue Ling blinked.

"Then come in."

"No need!"

His response was immediate.

"I’ll just hand it to you!"

Yue Ling stared at the door.

"...What?"

Before she could question him further, Liu Shan spoke again.

"Could you open the door, Boss?"

Yue Ling sighed and walked over. She turned the handle.

The moment the door opened—

An arm stretched through the narrow opening.

A shopping bag dangled from its fingers.

"Here you go, Boss!"

Yue Ling froze.

Liu Shan stood outside with his body deliberately turned away from the entrance.

His other hand covered his eyes.

He looked like a man desperately trying to avoid witnessing something that might shorten his lifespan.

Yue Ling’s cheeks instantly turned crimson.

"Liu Shan!"

"Yes, Boss?"

She stared at his covered eyes.

"What are you doing?"

"Delivering the suit!"

"I can see that!"

"Good!"

His arm remained extended.

"Then please take it!"

Yue Ling’s face grew even hotter. She knew exactly why he was behaving this way.

And the realization made her want to disappear into the floor.

"Liu Shan..."

"Boss, I promise I didn’t see anything!"

Her eyes widened.

"I didn’t ask!"

"Right! Of course!"

He swallowed audibly.

"Anyway, the suit is black, just as you requested. It’s from our latest collection, and the measurements should fit Mr. Lu perfectly."

Yue Ling snatched the bag from his hand.

"Thank you!"

"You’re welcome!"

Bang!

The door shut.

Outside, Liu Shan slowly lowered his hand.

He stared at the closed door.

Then exhaled.

"Good heavens..."

He wiped an imaginary bead of sweat from his forehead.

’I survived.’

After the warning he had received in the elevator, there was absolutely no chance he would risk entering that office.

Especially when Lu Tian was inside.

And especially when his boss had suddenly requested a replacement suit.

Liu Shan wasn’t foolish.

He could put two and two together.

He shook his head.

Nope.

Whatever happens behind that door is none of my business.

And he will never forget the day he walked in on them once.

He turned around and hurried toward his own office. The farther he got from Yue Ling’s door, the better.

Inside the office, Yue Ling stood motionless with the shopping bag in her hand.

Her cheeks were still burning. She stared at the closed door.

Then slowly turned around.

Lu Tian was sitting comfortably on the white couch, the throw blanket draped over his shoulders.

He looked entirely too pleased with himself.

Like a king watching a particularly entertaining performance from his throne.

The moment their eyes met, his lips curved into a smile.

Yue Ling narrowed her eyes.

"Don’t."

Lu Tian raised an eyebrow.

"Don’t what?"

"Whatever you’re about to say."

His smile widened.

"I haven’t said anything."

"Exactly. Keep it that way."

He chuckled.

Yue Ling walked toward him and thrust the shopping bag into his hands.

"Here’s your suit."

Lu Tian accepted it.

But instead of immediately examining the contents, he stood and leaned closer to her.

Yue Ling instinctively stepped back.

"What?"

He lowered his head until his lips were near her ear. His voice dropped to a teasing whisper.

"I’m sure we weren’t that loud."

Yue Ling froze.

For one second, her mind went completely blank.

Then—

"LU TIAN!"

Her face turned an even deeper shade of red.

She smacked his chest. Not hard enough to hurt him.

But certainly hard enough to express her embarrassment.

Lu Tian burst into laughter.

Yue Ling glared at him.

"You’re shameless!"

He caught her hand before she could smack him again.

Then gently pulled her closer.

"Only for my wife."

She stared at him.

The man was impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

Yet the affectionate smile on his face made it difficult for her to remain angry.

Lu Tian lowered his head and kissed her cheek.

"Don’t be embarrassed."

Yue Ling gave him an incredulous look.

"Easy for you to say!"

He chuckled.

"Your assistant didn’t see anything."

"That’s not the point!"

"Then what’s the problem?"

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

How was she supposed to explain the problem to a man who clearly saw nothing wrong with his behavior?

Lu Tian watched her flustered expression with growing amusement.

He had always admired Yue Ling’s composure.

Whether she was negotiating a business deal or confronting an enemy, she rarely allowed her emotions to show.

But when it came to him—

She was wonderfully easy to tease.

And he loved every second of it.

Yue Ling finally exhaled.

"Just put on your suit."

Lu Tian smiled.

"Yes, wife."

He opened the shopping bag and examined the contents.

A finely tailored black suit rested inside, accompanied by a crisp dress shirt.

His eyebrows rose slightly.

"Not bad."

Yue Ling crossed her arms.

"Of course not. It’s from my company."

He glanced at her.

"Then I suppose I should thank the designer."

She smiled.

"You should."

Lu Tian set the bag aside.

Then stepped toward her again.

Yue Ling immediately raised a hand.

"No."

He stopped.

"I haven’t done anything."

"You’re thinking about it."

His lips twitched.

"Am I?"

"Yes."

He laughed.

Then gently caught her raised hand and kissed her knuckles.

"Thank you, Mrs. Lu."

Yue Ling’s expression softened.

"You’re welcome, Mr. Lu."

For a moment, they simply looked at one another.

Then she glanced toward the clock.

Her eyes widened.

"Oh, no."

Lu Tian raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"I really need to get back to work."

He smiled.

"Then go."

Yue Ling looked at him suspiciously.

"You’re not going to stop me?"

"No."

"Promise?"

He nodded.

"Promise."

She studied him for another second before turning toward her desk.

Behind her, Lu Tian began changing into the fresh suit.

The black fabric fitted him perfectly.

As expected, it had been chosen well.

He adjusted his cuffs and glanced at his reflection in the glass.

Then he looked toward his wife.

She had already returned to her desk, reviewing the documents she had neglected earlier.

A faint smile appeared on his lips. His gaze softened.

Only moments ago, she had been laughing in his arms.

Now she was once again the composed and capable woman who commanded an entire fashion empire.

Both sides of her fascinated him.

And both belonged to the woman he would soon marry.

Lu Tian quietly approached her desk.

Yue Ling looked up.

"What now?"

He leaned down and kissed her forehead.

"Nothing."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

He smiled.

"I just wanted to thank my wife again before I leave."

Yue Ling laughed softly.

"For the suit?"

He shook his head.

"For everything."

Her expression softened.

Lu Tian brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

Then, with a mischievous glint in his eyes, he added.

"Although I may need another sanitizing session when we get home."

Yue Ling stared at him.

Then grabbed the nearest document folder.

"LU TIAN!"

His laughter filled the office as he stepped out of reach.

And somewhere down the corridor, Liu Shan felt an unpleasant chill run down his spine.

He quickly lowered his head and returned to work.

Whatever was happening behind that door, he wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.
