Chapter 723: Your Parents Are Lying to You?
Chapter 723: Chapter 723: Your Parents Are Lying to You?
Lucy Summers was at a milk tea shop with her friend, drinking and taking pictures.
She made all sorts of funny faces, trying her best to look happy.
But only she knew that she didn’t feel the least bit relaxed.
Half an hour ago, she had seen the WeChat message from Renee Jennings.
But she hadn’t had the courage to open the picture of the test results.
She tried to distract herself, but the results were constantly on her mind.
They would decide whether she was Lucy Summers or Shirley Sawyer.
Another ten minutes passed.
Lucy Summers finally couldn’t resist picking up her phone. She opened her chat with Renee Jennings, her fingertip hovering for a few moments before she finally tapped on the image of the test results.
She read it carefully, then calmly said to her friend, "I’m going to the restroom."
Lucy Summers went into a stall, closed the door, and clutched her chest. Her breathing became difficult and ragged.
She pressed her lips together tightly as hot tears streamed down her face, dripping from the edge of her jaw.
’So I really am Shirley Sawyer.’
’Then who is Lucy Summers?’
Lucy Summers still hadn’t replied. Sheryl Sawyer’s heart was in her throat as she said anxiously, "Hasn’t Lulu seen the results yet?"
Renee Jennings tilted her head to look at Sheryl’s worried face, pursed her lips in thought, and said, "Why don’t we book flights to Jaelara right now and talk to her in person?"
Normally, Sheryl Sawyer would never entertain such a crazy idea, but today, she was tempted.
"But what if we rush over there and she’s not in Jaelara?"
"I don’t think so. Yesterday she said she was going to stay for two more days."
Sheryl Sawyer immediately took out her phone and opened a booking app. "I’ll book the tickets."
Just as she was about to buy them, Renee Jennings’s phone vibrated. A new WeChat message notification appeared on the screen.
She unlocked it to check and announced, "Lulu replied."
Sheryl Sawyer quickly turned to look. On the screen was a single word: [Okay.]
Lucy Summers had only replied with a single "Okay."
The light in Sheryl Sawyer’s eyes dimmed. She asked in a low voice, "Are we still going to Jaelara?"
Her phone was still on the payment screen.
Renee Jennings was decisive. "We’re going."
Just like that, they decided. The two packed a couple of changes of clothes and set off for Zenvia International Airport.
On the way, Renee Jennings received a call from Michelle Fuller and told her what was happening.
"Have you reached the airport yet?"
"Still on the way."
"Wait for me, I’m coming right now!" Michelle Fuller hung up, ran out without even packing, and just shouted a quick goodbye to Ginny.
Renee Jennings had been on speakerphone, so Sheryl Sawyer heard what Michelle Fuller said.
"Renee, does Michelle mean she’s coming to Jaelara with us?" Sheryl Sawyer asked.
Renee Jennings, holding the steering wheel, said with a wry smile, "Yes, that’s just how Michelle is. I hope you don’t mind."
"Of course not." Sheryl Sawyer picked up her phone. "I’ll buy her ticket. Do you have her ID number?"
"Don’t worry," Renee Jennings said. "Michelle will handle it herself."
"Okay." Sheryl Sawyer nodded. "Then I won’t ask her."
Not long after the two arrived at the airport, Michelle Fuller rushed in.
Since she had left in such a hurry, she had, for once, gone out without any makeup on.
"Michelle, how did you get here so fast?" Renee Jennings asked, surprised.
Even if she had left immediately after hanging up, it was impossible to get from the Fullers’ estate to the airport that quickly by car.
Michelle Fuller said smugly, "I had my driver drop me off at the subway entrance, and I took the subway here. Smart, right?"
"Very smart," Renee Jennings teased. "Is our little princess getting used to her first subway ride?"
Michelle Fuller retorted indignantly, "What do you mean, first time? This is my third time!"
"My mistake, then." Renee Jennings’s lips curled into a slight smile.
Michelle Fuller sat down next to Sheryl Sawyer and said softly, "Sheryl, I’m really so happy for you, and I wanted to be with you to witness this important moment. I hope you don’t mind."
"Thank you." Sheryl Sawyer looked gratefully at her and Renee Jennings. "I don’t mind at all. Having you both with me is very reassuring."
"Oh, good, good." Michelle Fuller let out a sigh of relief. On the way over, she had been worried Sheryl wouldn’t welcome her.
「Meanwhile.」
Lucy Summers dazedly followed her friend, checking off attractions from their travel guide.
Her mind was a complete blank, as if she had lost the ability to think.
By dinnertime, it was just her and her friend, Mindy Lynn. Halfway through the meal, Mindy couldn’t help but ask, "Lucy, are you really okay?"
"Huh?" Lucy Summers responded blankly. "Mindy, what’s wrong?"
Mindy Lynn sighed, her face full of worry and concern. "You haven’t been yourself since yesterday afternoon. Did something happen? Is there anything I can do to help?"
Lucy Summers tried to act normal, not realizing her friend had already noticed something was off.
She had originally planned to keep it to herself, but right now, she desperately needed to confide in someone.
Mindy Lynn was a girl she had met while working at a supermarket. They had started around the same time, lived in the same dorm, were about the same age, and quickly became friends.
Even after they both quit and started working in different places, they still made time to meet up for meals.
"Mindy, I..." Lucy Summers lowered her gaze, her voice filled with despair. "Something did happen."
"Do you want to talk about it?" Mindy Lynn was a very considerate person. "It’s okay if you don’t want to."
Lucy Summers replied, "I think... I might not be my parents’ biological daughter."
Upon hearing this, a stunned expression appeared on Mindy Lynn’s face. "Lucy, you’re not kidding me, are you?"
When they were roommates, Lucy Summers had often mentioned her parents, how they’d go to work at a construction site at 5:30 every morning and not get home until eleven or twelve at night, all so she could go to college.
Lucy’s mother also cared for her deeply and was always video-calling her.
’How could such wonderful parents not be her biological ones?’
"It’s true," Lucy Summers said earnestly, looking her friend in the eye. "My biological sister found me. I saw the test results today. It clearly states that we have a biological relationship."
"Oh my god." Mindy Lynn covered her mouth in shock, suddenly at a loss for words.
"Surprising, isn’t it?" Lucy Summers forced a bitter smile. "I was surprised too, because I always heard the adults say my mom had a difficult birth with me, that there was a lot of bleeding..."
"Huh?" Mindy Lynn frowned. "If you’re really not their biological child, why would they talk about having a difficult birth when you were born?"
Lucy Summers was just as confused. "That’s why I think it’s so strange. I can’t figure it out."
Mindy Lynn tilted her head and thought for a moment. "Is it possible your so-called biological sister is lying to you? That the test results are fake?"
Hearing this, Lucy Summers blinked and said hesitantly, "I don’t think... they would lie to me. There’s no benefit in it for them."
’If I wasn’t Shirley Sawyer, Sister Sheryl would just keep looking for her real sister.’
Mindy Lynn pursed her lips and said hesitantly, "Then maybe... your parents are the ones lying to you?"
