Chapter 719: Do a DNA Test?

Chapter 719: Chapter 719: Do a DNA Test?

Renee then introduced Sheryl Sawyer, who was beside her. "This is my friend, Sheryl Sawyer. She’s a police officer."

"A police officer?" Lucy Summers’s eyes lit up instantly, her voice filled with excitement. "That’s so cool! And your name is so pretty!"

’Sheryl Sawyer... what a poetic name.’

"Thank you," Sheryl Sawyer said softly. "Your name is very pretty too."

"Hehe." Lucy Summers gave a shy smile. "Thank you for the compliment. Can I call you Sister Sheryl?"

Sheryl Sawyer struggled to suppress her excitement, pretending to be calm as she nodded. "Of course. And I’ll call you Lulu."

Lucy Summers smiled happily. "Okay~"

The waiter brought over three drinks first.

Renee took a couple of sips and asked softly, "Lulu, where are you from?"

"I’m from Naridia," Lucy Summers replied.

"You look so young. Are you twenty?"

"I’m not that young." Lucy Summers held up two fingers. "I’m exactly twenty. You’re amazing, Renee!"

Hearing this, Sheryl Sawyer’s heart skipped a beat. ’Twenty years old... only one year different from Sweetie. The chances are high!’

She quietly clenched her fists, a fresh wave of anticipation rising within her.

Renee smiled. "So are you still in school, or are you working?"

At the mention of this topic, a hint of sadness unconsciously clouded Lucy Summers’s face. "I... I started working right after high school."

Sheryl Sawyer looked at her, a touch of concern in her eyes. "Why? Entering the workforce right after high school... you were so young."

"Well... my family’s financial situation wasn’t that great. They couldn’t afford to send two kids to school." Lucy Summers feigned a relaxed tone. "So I figured it would be better for me to start working early."

"Two kids?" Renee’s eyes flickered. "You have siblings?"

Lucy Summers nodded. "I have a younger brother. He’s three years younger than me."

The waiter began bringing out the dishes, so Renee didn’t press the topic further.

"Did calling you out today interfere with your travel plans with your friends?"

"Not at all." Lucy Summers shook her head and explained, "There are three of us, so the other two just went to lunch by themselves today."

"That’s good," Renee said with a smile. "I’m glad we didn’t mess up your plans."

As they were finishing their meal, Renee finally brought up the main reason for their meeting. "Lulu, I mentioned I had something important to tell you."

"Right." A puzzled look appeared in Lucy Summers’s eyes. "What is it?"

Sheryl Sawyer’s hands, resting on her lap, tightened into fists, and her heart began to race uncontrollably.

Renee looked into her eyes and said seriously, "I have a post on my homepage looking for a girl named Shirley Sawyer."

"Shirley Sawyer?" Lucy Summers blinked, instantly making a connection. Her gaze shifted to Sheryl Sawyer. "Don’t tell me she’s Sister Sheryl’s..."

"Shirley Sawyer is Sheryl’s younger sister," Renee explained. "Shirley was abducted by human traffickers when she was three years old."

Lucy Summers frowned, an expression of pity on her face, her voice laced with anger. "Those traffickers are despicable! They have no conscience!"

"Shirley was taken sixteen years ago." Renee’s voice was tinged with heartache. "In these sixteen years, there hasn’t been a single moment Sheryl hasn’t missed Shirley. She has never stopped looking for her."

Sheryl Sawyer pressed her lips together tightly. Her eyes burned, and a sour sting of tears welled up, but she fought them back.

Lucy Summers looked at Sheryl Sawyer, her gaze instantly softening, her eyes filled with undisguised sympathy.

Renee continued, "Sheryl became a police officer to find Shirley and to catch the traffickers who took her."

Sheryl Sawyer didn’t have the courage to meet Lucy Summers’s gaze. Her eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly lowered her eyes.

"Although Sheryl hasn’t found Shirley yet, there is some good news," Renee said. "The trafficker who abducted Shirley has been caught."

Lucy Summers let out a sigh of relief and couldn’t help but ask, "Did the trafficker say where she sold Shirley?"

Renee sighed and shook her head regretfully. "We asked. She doesn’t know. Shirley was the first child she ever abducted, and she handed her over to someone else at the time."

"Oh..." Lucy Summers’s lips turned down. She looked sadly at Sheryl Sawyer, her lips parting as if to speak, but she didn’t know how to comfort her.

"But now, we’ve found new hope," Renee spoke up again.

Lucy Summers’s eyes widened with excitement. "Is there a clue about Shirley?"

"Yes." Renee nodded slightly, a faint smile playing on her lips. "It was last night, when Sheryl saw you."

"What?" Lucy Summers froze.

"Sheryl felt that you reminded her of her Sweetie." Renee glanced at Sheryl Sawyer and said gently, "And coincidentally, you have a small red mole on the web of your right thumb."

Hearing this, Lucy Summers looked down at her right hand. There was indeed a red mole there.

’It’s so tiny. I didn’t even notice it until I was older.’

She pressed her lips together tightly as her heart began to pound like a drum, making her feel flustered.

"So..." Renee bit her lip. "We were thinking... is it possible that you’re Shirley Sawyer?"

She added, "This is a bit sudden. I hope we haven’t offended you."

Lucy Summers’s eyes widened. She clenched her fists, unable to process this sudden news for a long time.

Sheryl Sawyer mustered her courage and raised her eyes to look at her.

It was strange.

’The expression on Lucy’s face right now... it somehow overlaps with how Sweetie looked sixteen years ago.’

In the silence, the sound of her own heartbeat grew louder and louder, thrumming in her ears.

After what felt like an eternity, Renee spoke again, breaking the silence. "Lulu, did we scare you?"

Lucy Summers took a deep breath, trying to make her voice sound calm. "I’m... I’m actually okay."

Hearing this, both Renee and Sheryl Sawyer let out a sigh of relief.

"That’s good," Renee said.

Lucy Summers nervously picked up her drink and took a few sips, staring at the lemon slice inside as she began to speak slowly. "It’s because... I’ve also suspected that I might not be my parents’ biological child."

Sheryl Sawyer’s gaze wavered, and she asked urgently, "Why? Were they not good to you?"

"It’s not that they were bad to me." Lucy Summers frowned, conflicted. "It’s just... compared to how much they dote on my younger brother, it feels like I’m not their real child. But a lot of people say I look like my mom."

"I see." Renee thought for a moment and then suggested, "Lulu, if you don’t mind, should we do a DNA test first?"

Sheryl Sawyer stared at her, her eyes filled with anticipation.

Lucy Summers’s reply was surprisingly quick. "Of course, we can."

’After all, a DNA test wouldn’t cost me anything.’

"It’s just..." She looked worriedly at Sheryl Sawyer. "I’m afraid the results will disappoint you. My parents always talk about when I was born, so... I don’t think it’s possible that I was adopted."
