Chapter 709: They Put on Another Act
Chapter 709: Chapter 709: They Put on Another Act
"Why should I?" Diana Young said, looking annoyed. "Why should I get dragged into this mess?"
Hearing this, Harold Goodman sneered, "Don’t you even think about who he died for!"
"You—" Diana Young glared at him, furious. "You’ve got to be kidding me. You killed someone, and you’re blaming someone else? Why don’t you blame yourself for having such twitchy hands and just having to stab someone with a knife?"
"Honey, listen to the things she’s saying!" Harold Goodman said, his face dark.
Dana Young turned and shot him a glare. "Can you just shut your mouth?"
Harold Goodman took a deep breath, gritted his teeth, and nodded.
Dana Young looked back at Diana Young. After hesitating for a few seconds, she dropped to her knees. "Danna, I’m begging you..."
Diana Young was startled. She frowned and said, "What are you doing? I’d say yes to anything else, but this is no small matter!"
"I know, that’s why I’m begging you." Dana Young’s face was streaked with tears. "I really don’t want my child’s father to be a murderer..."
"Sis, get up first!" Diana Young pulled her to her feet. Glancing at Holden Lee collapsed on the sofa, she felt a chill creep up her spine. "Why don’t we call an ambulance and send him to the hospital first? If they manage to save him, then Harold won’t be a murderer."
"No!" Dana Young immediately rejected the idea. "Even if he doesn’t die, Harold will still go to jail. I don’t want him to go to jail!"
She knelt again, looking at Diana Young pleadingly. "Danna, please. If you just help me this one time, I’m willing to give up this apartment."
The apartment was left to them by their parents, and it was currently in both sisters’ names.
"You’re willing to give up the apartment?" Diana Young asked, surprised.
"Yes!" Dana Young promised earnestly. "I don’t want the apartment. I just want Harold to be okay, to be with me when our child is born."
Diana Young pursed her lips, hesitation clear in her eyes.
’This apartment may be old and shabby, but it’s spacious. If it gets demolished in the future, we could get a big payout...’
Diana Young pondered for a moment. "Sis, are you sure I won’t go to jail for killing in self-defense against rape?"
"I’m very sure," Dana Young said with conviction. "My lawyer friend was very clear. You have to insist that he was trying to rape you, and that’s why you..."
Diana Young was still worried. "But what if I do have to go to jail? Wouldn’t my life be ruined?"
"Danna, trust me," Dana Young said earnestly. "That lawyer is very good. If he says you won’t do time, you definitely won’t."
"But..."
"Stop hesitating," Dana Young said. "If we’re really doing this, we need to stage the scene now."
"Stage the scene?" Diana Young was a bit lost. She frowned and asked, "What do you mean?"
Dana Young explained, "The fruit knife has Harold’s fingerprints on it. We have to wipe them off. And the footprints on the floor—we have to wipe away Harold’s and you have to make new ones."
"I... I need to think about it some more."
"Stop thinking, Danna. Trust me. I would never hurt you."
In the end, for the sake of the apartment, Diana Young agreed to take all the blame for Harold Goodman.
The Little Sparrows’ Great Uncle said, "CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP! No wonder when we sparrows arrived, we saw those two humans mopping the floor."
Renee Jennings never imagined the truth could be so outrageous.
Holden Lee had died protecting Diana Young, only to be framed by her as a rapist!
"Great Uncle, when you arrived, did you only see the deceased and the two sisters?" Renee Jennings asked.
Great Uncle: "CHIRP! That’s right!"
Blossom: "CHIRP CHIRP~ The harmful male left, and then the two sisters started mopping the floor. They also put on shoes and walked back and forth on it."
Great Uncle: "CHIRP CHIRP! And then they put on a show!"
Dana Young opened the door and let out a scream. "AHH—"
Diana Young said through her tears, "Sis, what do I do? I didn’t mean to..."
"Call an ambulance!" Dana Young’s voice was urgent.
Great Uncle: "CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP! At the very end, a group of people in white clothes carried a bed and took away the human who was covered in blood."
"I understand. Thank you," Renee Jennings said gratefully.
Blossom added, "CHIRP CHIRP! Oh, right, that harmful male lives upstairs!"
"Okay." Renee Jennings nodded gravely. "I have a clear picture now. Next, I’ll treat you all to something to eat. What would you like?"
The Little Sparrows all chirped at once.
Renee Jennings jotted it down in her phone’s memo app, then turned to Carmen Lane. "Carmen, I’ll have to trouble you to make another run and help me buy these things."
"No trouble, no trouble at all," Carmen Lane said. "Just send it to me, and I’ll go buy it right away."
"Okay." Renee Jennings copied the list and messaged it to her.
After Carmen Lane left, she chatted with the Little Sparrows about this and that, not mentioning the case again. After all, the real murderer lived in this very building.
Carmen Lane returned quickly with the items.
Renee Jennings scattered the food the Little Sparrows loved under a tree. Watching them happily lower their heads to peck at it, she remembered something else and turned to warn the nearby cats and dogs not to come close, so the sparrows could eat in peace.
She stayed for a little while longer before speaking up, "Take your time eating, everyone. I have to get going, I have things to do. I’ll see you all next time."
After she finished speaking, Renee Jennings turned around and said to the others, "I’ve got a clear picture. Let’s go back."
On the way back to the police station, Renee Jennings recounted the details.
Carmen Lane said indignantly, "This Diana Young is too much! Someone saved her out of the goodness of their heart, and she repays his kindness with malice, not only getting him killed but also slapping him with the label of a rapist!"
"Exactly," Sheryl Sawyer spoke up as well. "I just don’t get why Diana Young would agree to help the man who wanted to assault her and frame the man who wanted to save her, all for half an apartment."
Shawn Cheney’s hands tightened on the steering wheel, his voice clearly filled with anger. "Holden Lee’s death was such a terrible injustice!"
"Yeah," Carmen Lane sighed. "So what exactly was the relationship between him and Diana Young?"
Renee Jennings frowned. "I forgot to ask the Little Sparrows if they’d ever seen Holden Lee and Diana Young interact before."
"It’s okay, it’s okay," Carmen Lane said quickly. "We’ll find out when we get back and interrogate Diana Young."
Back at the station, a colleague told Carmen Lane that Holden Lee’s relatives had arrived, wanting to seek justice for him.
「In the conference room.」
Holden Lee’s sister was a mess of tears and snot. "My little brother has followed the rules his whole life. He’s a delivery driver who’s too scared to even run a red light... How could he possibly do something like that to a girl?"
"My brother’s death was so unjust! He was framed! I don’t believe he would rape someone..."
"Ms. Lee, I understand how you feel..." Carmen Lane comforted her softly before saying, "I have a few questions to ask you about Holden Lee."
"What questions?" Ms. Lee asked, choking back sobs.
Carmen Lane asked, "Do you know Diana Young?"
"No." She shook her head, her eyes blurry with tears.
Carmen Lane: "Did your brother usually like to watch livestreams?"
"I rarely saw him on his phone. He always got home very late after his delivery runs..."
