Chapter 694: Where There’s Life, There’s Hope

Chapter 694: Chapter 694: Where There’s Life, There’s Hope

Henry Stark’s car and Sylvia Brooks’s arrived at the scene, one right after the other.

When Zephyr saw Henry Stark, he considered him something of an acquaintance.

"You’re here. Guess my job is done," Zephyr muttered. It spread its wings, gave them a couple of flaps, and lifted its talons from Sidney Gomez’s scalp to circle low overhead.

Henry Stark glanced at Zephyr, then his gaze fell upon Sidney Gomez.

Seeing the ghastly wound on the man’s scalp, Henry Stark asked calmly, "What happened?"

Sidney Gomez was slumped on the ground, his face deathly pale. He spoke weakly, "Officer, am I... am I going to die?"

Sylvia Brooks got out of her car and greeted Henry Stark. Her eyes suddenly landed on Sidney Gomez, and she couldn’t help but frown before quickly walking over to Phoebe Sawyer.

"Phoebe, Sawyer."

"Sylvia." Phoebe threw herself into Sylvia’s arms, the tears she’d been fighting back finally uncontrollable.

Sylvia held her, gently patting her back and soothing her. "Phoebe, don’t be afraid. We’re all here. Everything’s okay now."

"Sylvia..." Phoebe sobbed quietly. "A little swallow... it got hurt trying to help me..."

"Renee has already taken it to get treated," Sylvia said. "It should be fine. Don’t worry too much."

"Can you take me to see the little swallow?"

"Okay, I’ll take you."

"I’ll go with you," Sawyer said quietly. "I just need to let my boss know."

Sylvia looked at her and nodded. "Okay."

「The Pet Hospital.」

After examining Inky’s injuries, the veterinarian turned to Renee Jennings and explained, "The little swallow’s wing appears to be fractured, and its breathing is abnormal, which suggests trauma to the chest cavity. There’s also discharge from its mouth and nasal passages, possibly indicating organ damage. We need to run more detailed tests as soon as possible."

"Okay. Please, Doctor," Renee Jennings said, her slender brows tightly knitted, her tone pleading.

"Don’t worry, Miss Jennings. We’ll do everything we can." With that, the veterinarian wheeled Inky into the examination room.

Renee Jennings waited in the hallway, her heart pounding with anxiety.

A little over ten minutes later, the veterinarian returned, wheeling Inky back to her.

"Miss Jennings, it’s as I suspected. The little swallow has a fractured right wing, and its chest and internal organs were injured from the impact," the vet explained. "There’s some minor internal bleeding, so we need to stop that and manage the pain first."

Renee Jennings nodded. "Okay."

The vet continued, "To prevent any infection from its internal injuries, we’ll also give it a course of antibiotics. It can’t eat on its own right now, so we’ll be providing assisted feeding..."

Renee Jennings listened intently. "Okay."

The vet added, "It will need to stay here for a few days of rest and observation. If its condition doesn’t improve, or if it worsens—for example, if there’s major hemorrhaging—we’ll have to operate immediately. We’ll call and notify you beforehand if that happens."

"I understand." Renee Jennings nodded gravely. "Thank you for everything."

She gave the vet a deep bow.

"Oh, no need for that," the vet said quickly. "It’s our job, after all."

"Thank you," Renee Jennings said one more time.

She walked to the front desk to pay for Inky’s examination and boarding fees.

Just then, the glass door at the entrance was pushed open from the outside, accompanied by the clear chime of a bell.

The receptionist looked over and smiled. "Good evening."

Renee Jennings glanced over as well. Catching sight of three familiar figures in her periphery, she turned her head fully. "Sylvia, Sawyer, Phoebe. You’re here."

"Oh, they’re your friends, Miss Jennings," the receptionist said with a knowing smile.

Phoebe asked anxiously, "Renee, how’s Inky?"

"A broken bone, and some damage to its chest and internal organs," Renee said quietly. "There’s also some bleeding, so it needs to stay here for treatment and observation."

Although it sounded serious, Phoebe quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

’Thank goodness.’

’At least it’s still alive.’

’As long as it’s alive, there’s hope.’

"How much are the medical fees?" Phoebe asked. "I’ll pay."

Renee shook her head. "You don’t have to."

But Phoebe insisted. "No, I have to. It’s my responsibility."

Sylvia said gently, "Renee, let Phoebe do it. It’ll make her feel better."

Renee looked at Phoebe’s red, swollen eyes and nodded. "Alright."

After paying at the front desk, Phoebe couldn’t help but ask, "Can I go see Inky?"

"Let me ask the doctor." Renee went to ask at Exam Room 4, then returned to take Phoebe to see Inky.

Phoebe looked at the motionless little swallow, remembering how it had bravely flapped its wings to protect her. Her eyes grew red all over again. "You have to get better, little swallow."

After a few minutes, Renee said, "Phoebe, we should go for now. We can come back to see Inky tomorrow."

Phoebe nodded firmly. "Okay. We’ll come see it tomorrow."

Once they were outside the pet hospital, Sylvia spoke up hesitantly. "Phoebe, I think I saw Sidney Gomez back there. That was him, wasn’t it?" Phoebe had been too upset when they arrived, so Sylvia hadn’t pressed her about it.

"It was." Phoebe nodded. She thought back for a moment before explaining, "He didn’t realize it was me at first. He just came over to hit on me..."

Sidney Gomez was her ex-boyfriend. She had caught him cheating on her with another woman during their relationship and had broken up with him on the spot.

He had pestered her for a while afterward, but she’d been adamant about the breakup, so he eventually gave up.

Sylvia frowned. "That Sidney Gomez is so shameless."

"I know," Phoebe agreed. "He even asked to get back together."

"Disgusting," Sylvia said, completely at a loss for words. Then she changed the subject. "By the way, why were you there all by yourself?"

Phoebe opened her mouth, but then fell silent.

No one said a word, and the atmosphere suddenly turned awkward.

Sawyer spoke up softly, breaking the silence. "Should we find a place to get some sweet soup? I think there’s a good dessert shop around here."

Renee Jennings nodded. "Sounds good."

Sylvia looked at Phoebe. "Is that okay with you, Phoebe?"

"Okay," Phoebe answered quietly.

"I’ll pull up the directions," Sawyer said, opening a map app on her phone and leading the way.

The dessert shop was small, but it was popular. The inside was completely full, so they had set up lots of camping-style tables and chairs out front, which created a nice ambiance.

The group picked a slightly quieter table and sat down.

There was a menu on the table. Sawyer handed it over. "See what you want. I’ll go up and order."

Renee studied the menu. "I’ll have a bowl of black sesame with milk paste."

Sylvia: "I’ll have the black sesame paste too."

Phoebe: "I’ll have the black sesame paste as well, then."

"Black sesame paste for everyone, then?" Sawyer’s lips curved into a slight smile. "I’ll get a bowl too."

She got up and went to wait in line to order.

Renee quickly stood up to join her.

Seeing her approach, Sawyer smiled. "Renee, you can just stay seated."

"I’ll keep you company." Renee raised an eyebrow slightly. "This line is so long. It’d be boring to wait by yourself."
