Chapter 690: Has the Killer Been Found?
Chapter 690: Chapter 690: Has the Killer Been Found?
After getting home in the wee hours of the morning, Renee Jennings lay in bed, tossing and turning. Unable to sleep, she edited and published another post.
When she woke up the next day, it was already nearly noon.
Renee raised her hand and pressed the switch for the curtains. The seamless drapes slowly drew apart, and brilliant sunlight flooded in through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
She sat up, leaning against the headboard, and scrolled through her private messages, making sure not to miss a single one.
A user named "The Dream-Chasing Deer" had sent her a lot of messages.
[Ms. Jennings, there’s something that scares me now whenever I think back on it.]
[A few days ago, I took my Lucky out for a walk, and he started acting a little strange when we were crossing a bridge!]
[When we got to the middle, Lucky kept getting in front of me, as if he was trying to stop me from going any further!]
[Several times, when I tried to keep going, he tugged on his leash, trying to pull me back.]
[He seemed really agitated that day, so after a moment, I decided to just take him home.]
[Lucky went back to normal on the way home. But then, the next day, I saw a message in my building’s group chat that a girl had been murdered that night in the grove on the other side of the bridge!]
[Ms. Jennings, do you think Lucky sensed something that day? Is that why he kept trying to stop me?]
Renee finished reading the messages from The Dream-Chasing Deer and typed a reply: [That’s very likely. I can communicate with Lucky over video chat. Has the killer been caught?]
After sending the reply, Renee went back to reading her messages.
A message from a user named "The Wisdom Tree" caught her attention.
[Hey, streamer. I know a girl who looks a lot like the one in the photo you posted.]
Renee immediately replied to The Wisdom Tree: [Really? Would you be able to share her photo and name?]
After sending the message, she kept her eyes glued to the chat window.
Ten minutes passed, then twenty...
Half an hour later, there was a knock on her door, followed by Willow’s sweet voice. "Renee, are you up? It’s time to eat."
"Coming!" Renee called out. "I’m up."
She got out of bed and went to open the door. "Willow, you guys go ahead and eat. I’ll be down as soon as I’ve washed up."
"Okay, Renee," Willow agreed sweetly, pulling the door closed behind her.
After Renee came out of the bathroom, she checked her phone again. The Wisdom Tree still hadn’t replied.
By the time she finished lunch, Renee still hadn’t heard back from The Wisdom Tree. The Dream-Chasing Deer, however, had replied.
[Ms. Jennings, when are you free? Let’s do a video call!]
Renee immediately replied, "I’m free now."
She went up to the study on the second floor and, seeing The Dream-Chasing Deer’s reply, immediately initiated a video call.
"Ms. Jennings, good afternoon!" The Dream-Chasing Deer greeted her with a big, friendly smile, waving her hand.
"Good afternoon, Bambi." Renee noticed a thumb-sized scar on the young woman’s forehead and asked softly, "Bambi, is that a birthmark on your forehead?"
"Oh, this?" The Dream-Chasing Deer touched the scar on her forehead with her index finger. "It’s not a birthmark. I fell off a motorcycle when I was little and hit a rock."
Renee nodded slightly. "That sounds dangerous. It’s a good thing it’s on your forehead and not the center of your face."
"Yeah." The Dream-Chasing Deer nodded vigorously. "That’s what I think, too. If I don’t want to see it, I can just get some bangs to cover it up."
"True." A faint smile touched Renee’s lips. "But it’s fine. It doesn’t detract from your looks at all. You’re still very pretty."
The Dream-Chasing Deer suddenly got a little shy and awkwardly ran a hand through her hair. "Thank you for the compliment, Ms. Jennings. Hehe. To be honest, I was self-conscious about this scar for a long time, but I’ve come to accept it now."
"You should be confident," Renee said softly. "Where’s Lucky?"
"Lucky’s right here." The Dream-Chasing Deer crouched down, pointing the camera at a small, white dog with a yellow face lying by her feet.
She petted Lucky’s head and said with a smile, "Lucky, say hi to Ms. Jennings."
Lucky obediently barked, "Ms. Jennings."
The Dream-Chasing Deer praised him with a beaming smile, "My Lucky is such a good boy."
The corners of Renee’s lips turned up in a small smile. "Yes, he’s very impressive."
"Ms. Jennings, did he really say your name?" The Dream-Chasing Deer asked in surprise.
Renee nodded. "Lucky is very obedient."
"Oh my gosh!" The Dream-Chasing Deer was overjoyed. "Lucky, you’re amazing! You really are my good boy!"
Lucky, thrilled by the praise, let his tongue loll out and squinted his eyes in a dopey, happy smile.
The Dream-Chasing Deer quickly asked, "Lucky, can you tell Ms. Jennings why you didn’t let me go any further on our walk the other day? Did you know there was a bad person up ahead?"
Renee also spoke softly, "Lucky, is that what happened?"
"WOOF WOOF WOOF!" Lucky began to vividly recount the events of that night. "I didn’t spot the bad person at first. I heard about him from another dog."
"The other dog said there was a strange male human in the little grove, all bundled up so you couldn’t see what he looked like! And the scariest part was, the other dog said the male human had a knife hidden in his pocket!"
"Knives are so scary!" Lucky said excitedly. "Lulu uses a knife to chop thick pieces of meat, but she never takes a knife outside. That means it was wrong for that male human to be carrying one!"
Lucky continued, "When I heard what the other dog said, I started looking around, and sure enough, I saw a figure in the grove on the other side of the bridge!"
"I was scared Lulu would be in danger, so I kept trying to stop her from going any further."
"So that’s what happened." Renee nodded gently. "You did a great job, Lucky. You saved Lulu’s life."
Hearing this, The Dream-Chasing Deer’s eyes widened. "Ms. Jennings, is that really what happened? Lucky found the bad guy!"
Renee relayed what Lucky had said, then added with a gentle smile, "He’s a dog who’s repaying your kindness. He deserves some extra treats tonight as a reward."
"Okay!" The Dream-Chasing Deer nodded emphatically. "I will! Lucky really is my little good luck charm!"
The smile on Renee’s lips deepened. "Bambi, are there any other questions you’d like to ask?"
The Dream-Chasing Deer tilted her head in thought before saying, "Ms. Jennings, could you ask Lucky if there’s anything I’m not doing well enough, or if there’s anything I buy for him that he doesn’t like?"
"Alright." Just as Renee agreed, she heard Lucky start barking.
"WOOF WOOF WOOF! No, Lulu is wonderful to me! Everything she buys for me is delicious, and I love it all! Ms. Jennings, please help me tell Lulu that I love her very much!"
Renee raised an eyebrow. "Okay."
’It’s been a while since I’ve seen such a harmonious, loving home.’
After hearing Lucky’s thoughts, The Dream-Chasing Deer couldn’t resist hugging him and nuzzling his fur. "Lucky, you’re a little angel!"
After saying that, she remembered she was still on the video call and quickly added, "Ms. Jennings, I’m sorry to have troubled you today. Thank you so much for your help!"
"You’re welcome." Renee smiled slightly and asked one more question. "By the way, have they found the killer who was hiding in the grove?"
