Chapter 655: "Woof! Save Dad!
Chapter 655: Chapter 655: "Woof! Save Dad!
"If you dare tell Keenan, I’ll call him right now and say Dad tried to sleep with me while he was gone!"
Maeve Sloan must have been afraid Ethan’s Dad hadn’t heard, because she screamed at the top of her lungs.
Ethan’s Dad stopped dead in his tracks. Rage instantly surged from his chest to the top of his head, his temples throbbing violently.
He whipped his head around angrily. Just as he was about to speak, his heart felt as if it were being squeezed by a giant hand. A sharp, piercing pain shot through him, making it hard to even breathe.
CLANG—
The hammer in Ethan’s Dad’s hand suddenly fell to the floor. His body went limp and he collapsed, his vision blurring.
Lucky paced anxiously beside him, whimpering, "WOOF WOOF WOOF! Dad, what’s wrong? Dad, get up..."
Maeve Sloan heard the commotion outside and frowned suspiciously, thinking her father-in-law was taking out his anger by banging the hammer on the floor.
She wrapped the blanket around herself and picked up the clothes scattered on the floor. As she was getting dressed, Lucky suddenly burst in, barking furiously at her.
"WOOF WOOF WOOF! You evil woman, you made Dad fall! Go help him up!" Lucky was frantic.
Maeve Sloan’s expression turned vicious. "What are you screeching for, you little beast? Get out!"
Lucky turned and ran back to Ethan’s Dad’s side. Finding his eyes closed, he frantically nudged him with his furry head. "WOOF WOOF! Dad, wake up!"
Maeve Sloan finished dressing and walked out of the room. She was startled to see her father-in-law collapsed in the hallway. "Oh my god, you scared me to death!"
Lucky kept nudging Ethan’s Dad with his head, but he didn’t react at all.
Seeing this, Maeve Sloan started to panic a little. "Dad... Dad, stop playing games. Get up."
After speaking, she stared intently at her father-in-law. When he remained unresponsive, she took a couple of steps forward and nudged him with the tip of her foot. "Dad, are you okay? Don’t scare me!"
"WOOF WOOF WOOF! Save Dad! Hurry up and use your phone to call for help!" Lucky barked urgently.
Maeve Sloan’s heart pounded. She muttered to herself, ’Could the old geezer really be in trouble?’
A panicked look appeared on her face. She turned and rushed back into the room, grabbing her phone. Her fingers trembled as she keyed in the emergency number, but just as she was about to press the call button, her finger froze.
Maeve Sloan looked back, a new hesitation in her eyes. An idea was quietly taking root in the depths of her mind.
A moment later, she turned, grabbed a Chanel bag from the closet, and walked out of the room, phone in hand.
As she passed through the hallway, she didn’t even glance at Ethan’s Dad, simply stepping right over his body.
Seeing she was leaving, Lucky barked at her retreating back, "WOOF! Save Dad!"
Maeve Sloan sneered, "Little beast."
When Lucky saw her heading for the door, he chased after her again, trying to pull her back and make her call for help for Ethan’s Dad.
"Don’t touch me, get lost!" Maeve Sloan kicked at him in disgust, then slammed the door shut.
Lucky scrambled up from the floor and lifted his front paws, trying to open the door. But after several attempts, it was no use, and he nearly exhausted himself.
He let out a dejected whimper and returned to Ethan’s Dad’s side, curling up helplessly to stay with him.
Lucky’s recollection ended there, and he started barking excitedly, "Renee, please, you have to tell my sister! My brother’s wife is an evil woman! She’s the one who killed Dad!"
After hearing Lucky’s story, Renee Jennings’s slender brows knitted together. Her lips pressed into a tight, thin line, her simple, pretty face filled with anger.
’This Maeve Sloan is completely inhuman!’
She relayed Lucky’s words verbatim to Windswept Whimsy.
"It was Maeve Sloan?" Windswept Whimsy’s voice was full of disbelief. She clenched her fists so tightly her knuckles turned white, grinding her teeth until her jaw ached. "My dad was so good to her! He always thought of her first! How could she! How could she just leave him to die!"
The more Windswept Whimsy thought about it, the angrier she became, her voice filled with a seething hatred. "She killed my father. I’m going to kill her! I’m going to kill her..."
As she spoke, she clutched at her chest, sobbing her heart out.
On the other side of the screen, Renee Jennings and Michelle Fuller listened to her cries, their own eyes starting to burn. An indescribable, bitter tightness constricted their chests.
Lucky’s dark eyes also glistened with tears. He moved closer to Windswept Whimsy, rubbing his furry head against her arm, comforting her silently in his clumsy way.
Windswept Whimsy hugged Lucky, choking out, "Lucky, I miss Dad so much... I miss him so much..."
Lucky let out a low whimper. "WOOF! I miss Dad, too!"
Dad used to prepare yummy food for him every day, play with him and his toys, and take him out to play... After Dad died, the evil woman kicked him out.
Windswept Whimsy suddenly remembered something. "Lucky, Maeve Sloan said before that you were always barking at her and trying to bite her. Is that true?"
Lucky: "WOOF WOOF WOOF! I curse at her for making me lose my dad, but I’ve never bitten her! She’s lying! Dad said not to bite people, and I remember!"
Lucky was Ethan’s Dad’s dog. Ethan’s Dad lived with his son, and Lucky lived with them, too.
After his father passed away, his son, Keenan, took over caring for Lucky.
But Lucky knew the truth about Ethan’s Dad’s death. He knew Maeve Sloan was cheating, and he knew she’d killed Ethan’s Dad. Every time he saw her, he was reminded of his deceased master.
He couldn’t help but bark at her, calling her an evil woman, but he had never bitten her.
Because Dad had taught him that good dogs don’t bite people.
Before long, Maeve Sloan told Keenan that Lucky was going crazy during the day and was always trying to bite her. She demanded that Keenan get rid of him.
When Windswept Whimsy found out, she couldn’t bear the thought of getting rid of the dog her father had raised, so she took him into her own home.
Renee Jennings relayed Lucky’s answer to Windswept Whimsy.
"Lucky, you’ve suffered." Windswept Whimsy’s heart ached for Lucky, but at the same time, she was utterly enraged by Maeve Sloan’s actions. "She’s just so despicable! She cried the loudest at my father’s funeral. We all thought she was so devoted..."
She wiped away her tears, a new look of determination hardening her tear-streaked face. "I will not let Maeve Sloan get away with this."
"Windswept Whimsy, calm down first. Don’t be rash." Renee Jennings, worried she would act on impulse, soothed her gently. "Your brother probably listens to everything Maeve Sloan says. Do you think he’ll believe you if you tell him this?"
Windswept Whimsy frowned, frustrated. "My brother is terrified of that venomous woman. I don’t know what kind of spell she has him under."
Lucky suddenly started barking excitedly, "WOOF WOOF! I know! The evil woman is tricking my brother!"
Hearing this, a curious light entered Renee Jennings’s eyes. "Lucky, what is she tricking your brother about?"
Lucky: "WOOF WOOF WOOF! If my brother doesn’t listen to the evil woman, she threatens to kill herself! He gets scared every time, but I’ve seen her smirking in secret!"
