Chapter 649: Starving Oneself to Get Revenge
Chapter 649: Chapter 649: Starving Oneself to Get Revenge
Renee Jennings heard Hope’s thoughts and frowned in confusion.
’Who tricked Hope?’
As she was thinking, that silly, innocent voice sounded again.
’Liar! How dare you trick me! I’m going to starve myself and make you regret it! Hmph!’
Renee wanted to ask Hope who had tricked it, and what about.
But this was the Trenwick Cutie-pie Zoo, after all, not Zenvia.
After a few seconds of thought, Renee Jennings took out her phone and called Faye Wyatt.
As soon as the call connected, Faye Wyatt’s cheerful voice came through the receiver. "Renee, are you at the zoo by any chance?"
Renee Jennings laughed as well. "Faye, you’re half right. I’m at the Trenwick Cutie-pie Zoo."
"What are you doing all the way over there?" Faye Wyatt asked, surprised. "Is something up?"
Renee Jennings said, "I came to see the panda, Hope."
"Hope?" Faye Wyatt frowned for a moment. "I think I’ve come across videos of it online. Very skinny, and won’t eat."
"Yes. A follower DMed me about it yesterday. I searched for a few videos and felt something was off, so Michelle and the others took the high-speed rail with me first thing this morning."
"Sweetie, you’re so incredibly responsible." Faye Wyatt’s voice was filled with admiration. "Do you need any help from me?"
A smile touched Renee’s lips. "My beautiful and brilliant Faye, do you happen to know the person in charge of the Trenwick Cutie-pie Zoo?"
"I get it," Faye Wyatt said with a grin. "Give me a few minutes."
With that, she hung up.
About seven or eight minutes passed.
Faye Wyatt called Renee Jennings back. "Renee, you’re at the Panda Pavilion now, right? I’ve sent them your number. Someone will contact you shortly."
Worried she’d keep the line busy, Faye Wyatt didn’t say much more and quickly hung up.
A minute later, Renee Jennings’s phone rang again.
The caller ID showed an unknown number.
Renee Jennings answered the call, and a woman on the other end immediately began to introduce herself.
"Hello, Ms. Jennings. I’m the deputy director of the Trenwick Cutie-pie Zoo. My surname is Gomez. Director Wyatt just called and said you were at the Panda Pavilion. I’ve just arrived. Could you tell me what color you’re wearing?"
"I’m wearing white," Renee Jennings said as she stepped out of the crowd. "I’m waving. Can you see me, Director Gomez?"
"I see you! I’m coming over," Director Gomez’s voice brightened.
Renee Jennings saw two women walking toward her. A middle-aged woman in a pink shirt was in the lead, followed by a young, short-haired girl.
She extended her hand. "Director Gomez, hello."
The middle-aged woman took her hand, her voice filled with unconcealed excitement. "Ms. Jennings, thank you so much for being so concerned about Hope’s situation!"
"You’re too kind, Director Gomez," Renee Jennings replied with a slight smile.
A look of relief appeared on Director Gomez’s face. "Ms. Jennings, to be honest, the director and I had already discussed that if Hope’s condition didn’t change by next month, we were planning to ask for your help."
Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow. "What a coincidence. No need to wait until next month, then."
The cheers of tourists were all around them. Director Gomez quickly said, "Ms. Jennings, why don’t we talk in my office first?"
"Just a moment, let me tell my friends." Renee Jennings looked back at Michelle Fuller and the other two. "Why don’t you guys go look around? I’m going to Director Gomez’s office to talk."
Michelle Fuller replied obediently, "As you command, my queen."
Henry Stark’s deep gaze swept over Michelle Fuller and Zachary Conway, his tone calm. "Let them go look around. I’ll go to the office with you."
Renee Jennings nodded. "Okay, let’s go."
Zachary Conway watched their figures disappear into the crowd, then turned to Michelle Fuller, asking nervously, "Michelle, what animal do you want to see next?"
"How about we go see the giraffes?" Michelle Fuller still remembered what Renee Jennings had said before, about giraffes bullying antelopes.
"Sure," Zachary Conway said with a shy smile. "Wherever you want to go is fine. I have no objections at all."
Michelle Fuller nodded in satisfaction. "Alright then, let’s go see the giraffes."
As the two of them left to see the giraffes, Renee Jennings and Henry Stark arrived at Director Gomez’s office.
Director Gomez asked with a smile, "Ms. Jennings, Mr. Stark, would you prefer coffee or tea?"
"No need to trouble yourself, Director Gomez. We brought water." Renee Jennings got straight to the point. "Just now at the Panda Pavilion, I heard Hope’s inner thoughts. It said a liar had tricked it, and it’s going to starve itself to make the liar regret it."
A look of surprise and bewilderment instantly appeared on Director Gomez’s face. She frowned and said, "Hope was tricked by a liar?"
The assistant, also unable to hide her shock, chimed in, "And Hope is going to starve itself to get revenge?"
Renee Jennings gave a slight nod and said calmly, "That’s all I know for now. That’s why I’d like your assistance so I can communicate with Hope up close and find out the specific reason."
"No problem," Director Gomez agreed at once. She said to her assistant, "Contact the head of the Panda Pavilion and ask him to come over."
"Okay."
About three minutes later, the head of the Panda Pavilion arrived at the office, out of breath.
"Director Gomez, you were looking for me?"
Director Gomez explained, "Director Tate, this is Ms. Jennings. She’s here to help with Hope’s problem..."
"So we should have the breeder take Ms. Jennings to see Hope?" Director Tate, who had seen Renee Jennings online before, agreed with a chuckle. "I understand. Ms. Jennings, do you want to go over now?"
Renee Jennings nodded with a solemn expression. "Yes, right now."
The group went back to the Panda Pavilion.
Following the Breeder, Renee Jennings methodically went through the preparations to enter the enclosure: a temperature check, putting on shoe covers, and full-body disinfection.
There were three pandas in total in the activity area.
They were Felicity, Joy, and Hope.
They were all sub-adult panda cubs. Felicity was Joy and Hope’s older half-sister.
"People online are saying we’re abusing Hope, but we’re suffering in silence." The Breeder complained as they walked. "When we first noticed something was wrong with Hope, we immediately gave it a full physical examination. The results showed that Hope is perfectly healthy."
"But after a few days, Hope’s symptoms didn’t improve, so we had an animal psychologist conduct a psychological..."
As he spoke, the Breeder’s gaze drifted to a spot not far away, where Hope lay on the ground like a boneless heap. He frowned, sighing with a mix of heartache and helplessness. "We’ve tried every method we can think of, but nothing has worked."
However, the Breeder quickly regained his spirits. He turned to stare at Renee Jennings, his tone firm with conviction. "But now that you’re here, Ms. Jennings, we have hope again!"
Renee’s lips curved into a small smile. "I’ll do my best. I hope Hope gets better soon."
"He definitely will!" The Breeder lightened his steps as he approached Hope, calling out softly, "Hope, how are you feeling today? Still not good?"
Hearing the Breeder’s voice, Hope gave him a sidelong glance, then treated him like he was thin air.
"Come on, Hope, be good. How about some tender bamboo shoots?" The Breeder coaxed, his voice gentle as if placating a child. "They’re so fragrant. Just try a little."
