Chapter 646: Completely Changing Destiny
Chapter 646: Chapter 646: Completely Changing Destiny
Renee Jennings listened to Rhea Dempsey, a slow smile spreading across her lips. "Mom, that’s actually what I was thinking too. I wanted to ask what you, Dad, and my sister think. If you all support me, I’ll talk to Henry Stark and see if Willow and Glenn can stay with us for now. I’ll cover all the expenses."
"Of course I have no objection." Rhea Dempsey felt a wave of relief. "I’d be happy to help Willow and Glenn. But the financial pressure on you..."
Renee Jennings put an arm around Rhea Dempsey’s shoulder. "Mom, don’t worry about the money. I’m confident I can support Willow and Glenn all the way through college without it affecting our own lives."
"That’s good, then." Rhea Dempsey let out a sigh of relief and patted her hand, her voice filled with pride. "Renee, you’re becoming more and more capable."
Renee Jennings smiled. "Alright, I’ll call Dad now and ask him."
Rhea Dempsey nodded. "Okay."
Dalton Jenson’s opinion was simple. He had just one thing to say: "If your mother agrees, I have no objection."
Renee Jennings then called Diana Jennings, who was also very supportive of her decision.
The whole family was on board.
The smile on Renee Jennings’s lips deepened. "Okay, I’ll call Henry Stark now."
Henry Stark had just entered his office. He set his car keys on the desk and strode to the window on his long legs to take the call.
He didn’t seem surprised to hear about Renee Jennings’s idea.
Holding his phone, Henry Stark arched a dark brow, his tone growing more serious. "Renee Jennings, are you sure? Willow and Glenn are children with their own thoughts and feelings. They’re not like little animals. This is a heavy responsibility."
"I know," Renee Jennings said with a light laugh. "Don’t worry. My family and I made this decision after careful consideration."
Henry Stark: "Alright, I understand. I’ll talk to Willow and Glenn. If they’re willing to stay, we can move on to the next step."
Renee Jennings: "Okay. I already told them about the welfare agency last night."
"Got it." Henry Stark chuckled. "I’ll let the welfare agency know, then. Sawyer and I will head over in a bit to talk with the siblings."
Willow and Glenn sat in the living room watching TV, but nothing registered. Their hearts were filled with anxiety.
’Are the people from the welfare agency coming soon?’
Rhea Dempsey returned with a big smile on her face, having just come from the kitchen with a platter of cut fruit. "Willow, Glenn, come and have some fruit."
Ever since Willow and Glenn had moved in, the fruit was usually cut by Glenn Zane. This was the first time the siblings were eating fruit cut by Rhea Dempsey.
Willow stared at the fruit platter, a thought weighing on her mind. ’Is Aunt Rae making a special effort to cut fruit for us because my brother and I are about to leave?’
The cantaloupe, usually crisp and juicy, tasted bland and flavorless today.
An unknown amount of time passed before a familiar voice called out.
"Willow, Glenn, Henry and Miss Sawyer are here." Renee Jennings came over to them and said softly, "They’re out in the courtyard right now. They’d like to have a private chat with you."
Willow felt her heart skip a beat. She pressed her lips together and gave a stiff nod, her voice trembling slightly. "Okay, Renee. Glenn and I will go out now."
With that, she turned to Glenn. "Let’s go."
The two siblings left the living room, one after the other.
Rhea Dempsey watched their backs disappear through the doorway before murmuring to herself, "I wonder if Willow and Glenn will be willing to stay."
The sun was shining brightly. As Willow stepped out of the villa, she could see Henry Stark and Sawyer in the distance, playing with the cats and dogs.
She clenched the hand hanging at her side, every step feeling as heavy as if her feet were filled with lead.
"Henry, Miss Sawyer, hello." Willow stopped and tried to keep her voice steady as she greeted them.
Glenn followed his sister’s lead. "Henry. Miss Sawyer."
Henry Stark glanced over at them, a gentle smile softening his expression. "Willow, Glenn, have you been settling in okay here?"
"Very well." Willow nodded, a faint smile appearing on her tense little face. "Everyone has been incredibly nice to me and Glenn."
"Yeah, I really like it here," Glenn added, nodding eagerly, his eyes shining. But a second later, his expression fell, and he began picking at his fingers. "Henry... c-can my sister and I stay here? Instead of going to the welfare home?"
Hearing this, Willow whipped her head around to glare at him, her voice sharp with anger and panic. "Glenn, don’t talk nonsense!"
She actually understood why Glenn said it, but she knew that they were a burden. Even his own father, James Yelric, thought so—let alone strangers.
Renee Jennings was a complete stranger, yet she had taken them in for so many days and been so kind to them. That was already an immense debt of gratitude. She couldn’t be so greedy.
Willow clenched her hands, her body rigid. She suppressed the stinging in her eyes and said with forced conviction, "Henry, Miss Sawyer, Glenn and I are going to the welfare home. We’re ready."
"Willow, don’t be nervous." Sawyer walked over to the little girl and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Relax. We’re not here today to take you to the welfare home."
Glenn’s eyes widened in surprise. "Then where are you taking me and my sister?"
A slight smile played on Henry Stark’s lips, his deep voice tinged with amusement. "We’re here to ask you a question."
Hearing this, Willow frowned in confusion. "What do you mean? Ask me and Glenn a question?"
Henry Stark bent down slightly to meet their eyes, his tone wrapped in sincerity. "Willow, Glenn, your Renee called me this morning. Do you know what she said?"
Willow’s eyelashes fluttered. A thought flashed through her mind, but she quickly suppressed it.
Her fingertips curled slightly. She looked at Henry Stark, her eyes filled with a dazed uncertainty. "What did Renee say?"
Henry Stark’s lips curled into a smile. "Renee Jennings and her family are very fond of you and Glenn. She asked me to come and ask you: would you be willing to stay and become part of their family, instead of going to the welfare agency?"
Willow was completely stunned. She stared with wide eyes, her mouth slightly agape, as if she couldn’t process what she’d just heard.
Beside her, however, Glenn jumped in excitement and shouted, "I’m willing! I’m willing!"
Willow finally snapped out of her trance, her eyes filled with disbelief. "Is this real? Does Renee really want me and Glenn to stay?"
Henry Stark nodded with a smile. "It’s real. Are you willing?"
Afraid his sister might refuse, Glenn grabbed her hand and shook it frantically. "Sister, hurry up and say yes! I love it here! I even promised Zane and Jasmine that we’d play hide-and-seek after school!"
Willow’s eyes reddened as crystalline tears instantly welled up. She was crying and laughing at the same time, nodding her head vigorously. Her voice was choked with sobs, but her words were firm. "I’m willing! I’m so, so willing!"
Henry Stark straightened up and looked into the distance, where a slender figure stood among the dappled light and shadows.
An unconscious smile spread across his features, and he gave the figure a thumbs-up.
He knew very well that this decision of Renee Jennings’s would completely change Willow and Glenn’s destiny.
