Chapter 549: I’m Not Staying Here Anymore, I’m Not
Chapter 549: Chapter 549: I’m Not Staying Here Anymore, I’m Not
Blueberry watched Renee from afar, meowing at her, "Renee, I sense something really scary is here!"
His voice was filled with a noticeable panic—the primal animal instinct for danger.
"Blueberry, don’t be nervous," Renee called out. "He won’t hurt you guys."
Hearing this, Blueberry, trusting her completely, mustered his courage and walked forward. "What scary guy did you invite to help?"
"It’s Kaiser," Renee said, looking down at the handbag in her hands.
Kaiser slowly poked his head out, his brownish-gold eyes studying the cat not far away.
When Blueberry saw him, his body went stiff, and his fur, which had just relaxed, instantly stood on end again.
"This is my cat. His name is Blueberry," Renee introduced them. "Blueberry, you can call him Uncle Kaiser, just like Zane and Jasmine do."
Faced with a powerful opponent, Blueberry, knowing that discretion is the better part of valor, immediately switched to a cutesy voice. "Meow~ Uncle Kaiser, hello there."
Kaiser replied coolly, "Hello."
"Th-then I’ll just go inside," Blueberry said, backing away cautiously.
He didn’t even dare turn his back on Kaiser, retreating all the way to the door while facing him.
Back in the living room, Blueberry cried out nervously, "Quick! Renee got reinforcements to deal with the bad human, but he’s too scary! Everyone, hide!"
None of the other pets doubted Blueberry’s words, as they too had faintly sensed an unusual scent.
So, everyone scrambled to run upstairs.
Slider wailed from his terrarium, "You guys are so mean! The turtle is still here!"
Blueberry paused and tossed back, "You’re safe in your glass tank."
In less than a minute, the living room was empty of furry kids, with only a few light, downy hairs leisurely twirling in the air.
Seeing this, Rhea Dempsey raised an eyebrow, her face full of curiosity.
’What’s going on? Why did they all run away?’
The great-aunt started howling again. "I’m starving! Hurry up and get the maid to cook! After we eat, take me out to buy some new clothes."
Rhea Dempsey ignored her. The easiest way to deal with annoying people was simply to ignore them.
She was about to go back to watching TV, but her phone rang.
Rhea Dempsey glanced at the caller ID and immediately answered, "Renee, what? Huh? Okay, okay, okay, I get it."
After hanging up, she was still a bit dazed. She glanced at the door and swallowed nervously.
’No wonder the fur babies all ran off. A big shot is here!’
Rhea Dempsey was terrified. Even though Renee had repeatedly told her on the phone not to panic, this was, after all, the infamous Kaiser.
She couldn’t focus on whatever was on TV; her mind was completely filled with thoughts of Kaiser, who was about to enter the living room.
"I’m so hungry! Why isn’t anyone cooking? Does no one in this family eat? Are you all cultivating immortality or something? Or are you deliberately trying to starve me to death?" the great-aunt was still grumbling, a glint of cunning flashing in her murky eyes. "If you don’t want me to live here, you know, you could just say so."
Rhea Dempsey rolled her eyes. "Didn’t I tell you already? To take your rotten fruit and get lost? So why don’t you?"
The great-aunt was speechless.
She sat up and said in a heartfelt, earnest tone, "If I weren’t mindful of our bond as aunt and niece, I wouldn’t be sitting here today."
Rhea Dempsey sneered, "What a phony."
"If you really don’t want me to stay, I won’t force it," the great-aunt said, rubbing her hands together with a shifty look. "Just treat me like one of those poor relatives and give me a few hundred thousand, maybe a million, to get rid of me. I won’t go around telling people you’re unfilial either."
Rhea Dempsey stared at the space behind her and squeezed out a strained, bright smile. "You’re here."
The great-aunt heard this and asked nosily, "Who’s here?"
Seeing Rhea Dempsey still smiling, she assumed Dalton Jenson had arrived and turned to look—
The sight nearly scared her soul right out of her body.
The great-aunt’s face was deathly pale. Her mouth was open, but not a single sound came out.
’A snake... a king cobra!’
The great-aunt swallowed hard and began to inch her body toward her feet on the floor.
Once she’d moved to a relatively safe position, the great-aunt said in a trembling voice, "Quick! Rhea, call someone to catch the snake! That’s a king cobra! A bite from that is fatal!"
"That’s not a king cobra." Renee Jennings’s leisurely voice sounded. "This is a forest cobra. It’s different from a king cobra."
Kaiser slithered up to the great-aunt, holding his triangular head high. His scales glinted with a cold light, and his brownish-gold eyes stared at her as he flared his neck into a sharp, flat hood.
The great-aunt shrank into the corner of the sofa, wishing she could dig a hole and crawl into it.
She stared at Kaiser in terror, her voice high, panicked, and on the verge of tears. "I don’t care what kind of snake it is, it’s venomous! Catch it, quick!"
"You don’t understand, ma’am," Renee Jennings said, sitting down on the armchair, crossing her legs, and giving a half-smile. "This is my pet. Didn’t I just tell you? We have a lot of pets in this house. If you get scared and get bitten, we won’t be held responsible."
"What?" The great-aunt’s face was deathly white, her eyes filled with shock. "Th-th-this... This venomous snake is your pet? A-a-are you crazy? Keeping a venomous snake as a pet?"
"HISS~" Kaiser flicked his forked tongue and moved a little closer to the great-aunt.
The great-aunt was shaking all over, terrified that he would lunge and bite her.
She was filled with regret. If she had known Rhea Dempsey’s daughter kept a venomous snake at home, she never would have come.
’Forget about not getting any money; I can’t just lose my life here, can I?’
"Don’t you think Kaiser is cute?" Renee Jennings asked with a grin. "He seems to have taken a real liking to you."
"Wh-what’s so cute about him?" The great-aunt was stiff as a board, not daring to move a muscle, her voice trembling as she spoke. "Q-quick, make him go away! Far away from me!"
"Can’t be helped," Renee Jennings said with a helpless shrug, spreading her hands. "He does whatever he wants."
Just then, Kaiser leaned in closer to the great-aunt and flicked his tongue at her face.
The great-aunt was so scared she nearly died on the spot. She squeezed her eyes shut in terror, muttering brokenly, "This is going to be the death of me, the death of me!"
Renee Jennings put on an innocent, harmless smile. "How about we let him sleep with you tonight? He could wrap around you, be your blanket."
"N-no!" The great-aunt forced a weak, feeble sound from her throat. "I’m not staying here! I’m not staying! I want to go home! I want to go home!"
Hearing this, Kaiser slowly turned his head toward Renee. "Renee, the bad human has given up."
Renee Jennings gave him a thumbs-up. "You really are a good friend."
Kaiser backed away a little. The great-aunt eyed him, not daring to breathe. She cautiously placed her feet on the floor. Seeing he didn’t move, she used the sofa armrest to slowly pull herself up.
As soon as she stood up straight, her legs began to tremble uncontrollably. Not daring to delay, she forced her rubbery legs to carry her as she stumbled toward the door.
