Chapter 387: I Have Firmly Memorized Their Scent
Chapter 387: Chapter 387: I Have Firmly Memorized Their Scent
Kyle Morgan was in his police uniform. Hearing what he said, the old woman looked over at Renee Jennings. "Is this young lady a cop, too?"
"Yes," Henry Stark said gravely. "Your grandson was almost bitten by that Kaiser. It was our colleague who saved him."
Sawyer held out their phone. "See for yourself."
She had started recording a video from the moment she arrived at the park, and she had happened to capture the perilous scene.
The old woman saw the Kaiser slithering up behind her precious grandson, its head raised and tongue flicking, clearly about to strike.
She shuddered with belated fear and quickly apologized to Renee Jennings. "I’m so sorry, miss. I misunderstood..."
Renee Jennings gave her a cold glance and walked behind the tree.
The Kaiser, intimidated by her aura, had already retreated, coiling up the trunk of a small tree and turning its head toward Renee Jennings.
Renee Jennings looked up and met its gaze, speaking softly. "I’m Renee Jennings. What are you doing here?"
The Kaiser only stared at her warily, offering no response.
Renee Jennings thought for a moment, then exchanged for the "Hundred Times Animal Affinity" item.
The Kaiser sensed the change in her aura. The vigilance and fear in its eyes faded, replaced by a hint of confusion.
In the Kaiser’s eyes, Renee Jennings now seemed like a powerful yet friendly human.
Renee Jennings spoke again. "Are you a forest cobra? Your kind doesn’t usually come to human settlements. Did something happen?"
As her words fell, she could clearly sense the sorrow that flooded the Kaiser’s eyes.
"Can you tell me about it?" Renee Jennings said gently. "Maybe I can help you. The police officers behind me will help, too."
The Kaiser finally spoke. "You’re human. Would you really help a snake?"
"I will," Renee Jennings nodded, her tone sincere. "We’ve helped many animals. Forest cobras like you are a protected species."
"Then why do humans still want to harm snakes?" the Kaiser accused. "We didn’t attack any humans, but they were so cruel!"
"What did the humans do to you?" Renee Jennings asked.
Recalling the painful memory, the Kaiser’s dark brown eyes grew moist. "Those humans killed my wife and children!"
Last Friday, Elias Yardley and three male friends went hiking and found a clutch of snake eggs.
The men thought the eggs would be highly nutritious, so they took them to add to their meal.
The female Kaiser discovered the eggs were missing and tracked them, only to see the humans roasting them over a fire.
The female Kaiser immediately slithered over, trying to get her eggs back, but the humans got another wicked idea.
After a brief discussion, they worked together to capture the female Kaiser, killed her, and roasted her over the fire.
The Kaiser had been out hunting. When it returned home, it found its wife and children gone.
It smelled the lingering, unfamiliar scents and immediately realized there had been intruders.
The Kaiser was frantic, rushing out in a panic to search for them.
Along the way, it met another of its kind and learned that its wife and children had been killed.
The Kaiser hurried over, only to find the ground littered with remains.
Filled with rage, it followed the human scent, crawling into the undercarriage of a car.
It memorized the scent of those humans, determined to avenge its wife and children.
Renee Jennings’s guess was correct. The Kaiser had come for revenge.
"So you’re the one who bit and killed Elias Yardley, right?"
"Yes," the Kaiser admitted readily. "He deserved to die!"
In fact, before killing Elias Yardley, it had tried to get revenge on another one of the humans.
But that man had gotten lucky. His family rushed him to the hospital, and he survived.
The second time it bit someone, the Kaiser was smarter. It saw Elias Yardley trying to use that talking device to call for help and stopped him.
Just as it had wished, Elias Yardley died.
"That child from before..." Renee Jennings said pensively. "He’s the child of one of those men, isn’t he?"
"That’s right!" The Kaiser looked at the child with hatred. "They killed my wife and children! I want them to feel the pain of losing a child, too!"
Renee Jennings sighed internally. ’If I can make them pay the price and apologize to you, would you give up on revenge?’
"Impossible!" the Kaiser said firmly. "I must have my revenge! I don’t care about an apology! I’ve memorized their scents! I won’t let a single one of them go!"
Renee Jennings could understand the Kaiser. After all, humans had provoked and harmed them first.
If she were in its position, she would make the same decision.
After a moment of thought, Renee Jennings said in a solemn tone, "Then I’ll help you find them."
The Kaiser asked in astonishment, "You... you’re going to help me?"
"Yes," Renee Jennings nodded. "They went too far. As a fellow human, even I can’t forgive such brutal behavior."
The Kaiser couldn’t believe a human was willing to help it.
For days, it had been navigating the human world, and every human it encountered had screamed and tried to kill it.
"You’ll really help me?" It still found it hard to believe.
Renee Jennings: "I will. But I have one condition."
"What condition?"
"Aside from the men who did this, you can’t harm any other innocent humans."
"I haven’t harmed any other humans," the Kaiser retorted. "As long as humans don’t attack me, I won’t harm them."
"Good," Renee Jennings said. "You’re a reasonable snake. That means the child from before is also innocent. You can’t bite him."
The Kaiser couldn’t understand. "They killed my wife and children. Why can’t I bite their child?"
Renee Jennings explained, "The child is innocent. His father is the one who did wrong. If you want revenge, you can only bite his father. The child doesn’t know anything."
The Kaiser thought for a moment and agreed. "Fine. I promise you, I won’t bite any human young."
Renee Jennings let out a sigh of relief and continued, "I’m going to find those men for you now. Don’t leave this spot. I’ll bring them to you when I find them, okay?"
The Kaiser nodded. "Okay, but I’ll have to go hunt if I get hungry."
"I’ll have someone bring food to you."
The Kaiser had noticed over the past few days that many humans were afraid of it, so it agreed. "Alright, then."
"Thank you," Renee Jennings said earnestly. "I’ll find the other three men as quickly as I can."
With that, she slowly backed away.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when they saw her return.
Kyle Morgan looked at her with admiration. "Renee Jennings, you’re something else. You can even handle a Kaiser."
"I haven’t handled it," Renee Jennings said, her brow furrowing slightly. Worry was written in her clear eyes.
"What’s the situation now?" Zachary Conway asked.
The others also looked at her.
Renee Jennings’s lips, pressed into a thin line, moved as she spoke softly. "It’s the same Kaiser that killed Elias Yardley. During a hike, Elias Yardley and three of his friends killed its mate and children. It hid in their car and followed them down the mountain."
