Chapter 283: Is She Pregnant?
Chapter 283: Chapter 283: Is She Pregnant?
[LMAO, is that really what a rabbit sounds like?]
[Hahahaha, the rabbit sounds like a whistling kettle.]
[Watching the rabbit chew is so therapeutic.]
This was also Renee Jennings’ first time communicating with a rabbit, and the smile on her face deepened. "Dudu, do you know who Maisy’s boyfriend is?"
Dudu started squeaking again. "Maisy’s boyfriend is Jay."
"Maisy, is your boyfriend’s name Jay?" Renee Jennings asked.
Maisy said excitedly, "Yes, I call him Jay at home all the time. Dudu has really been listening to us talk."
She had been worried that since she had a rabbit, which wasn’t as smart as a cat or a dog, she might not get any answers at all.
Renee Jennings continued her conversation with Dudu. "Dudu, besides knowing that Jay is Maisy’s boyfriend, do you know anything else?"
"I also know Maisy is going to marry Jay!" After answering, Dudu urged, "I’ve answered so many questions. Can I have another tasty treat now?"
"Of course." Renee Jennings said to Maisy, "Dudu is doing great. Give it a little snack as a reward."
"Okay!" Maisy fed Dudu another small treat.
The little rabbit chewed its snack, its cheeks puffing in and out. Its floppy ears twitched slightly with the rhythm of its chewing, looking utterly adorable.
[So cute! I want to get a rabbit now too!]
[My friend’s rabbit looks just like StellaLou.]
[Oh my god, I’m dying from the cuteness.]
After Dudu finished its treat, Renee Jennings smiled and said, "Dudu, do you know that when humans get married, the male needs to give the female a bride price and buy her gold?"
Dudu: "I don’t understand, but I’ve heard everyone talking about it."
Renee Jennings’s gaze softened. "When Maisy wasn’t home yesterday, did Jay and his parents chat?"
"Yes!" A look of disgust flashed in Dudu’s eyes, which were like two black pearls. "They were so loud! Every time I was about to doze off, they’d wake me up. They’re so annoying!"
Dudu grew angrier as it spoke, even tattling, "Jay’s mom also said Maisy is wasting money by keeping a rabbit. She wanted to take me away and make me into delicious spicy rabbit heads! She has no manners at all! I’m so mad!"
[Is the little rabbit throwing a tantrum?]
[Hahaha, it’s trying to be fierce but just looks cute.]
"Renee, what’s wrong with Dudu?" Maisy asked with concern.
Renee Jennings pressed her lips together and explained, "Dudu said that Jay’s mother thinks you’re wasting money raising a rabbit and wants to take Dudu away to make spicy rabbit heads. It’s very angry."
Anger instantly flooded Maisy’s baby-fat face. "That’s outrageous! How could Jay’s mom say that?"
She raised a hand to stroke Dudu’s head, her voice full of apology. "I’m so sorry, Dudu. You’ve been wronged."
[Girl, if Jay’s mom is making your rabbit suffer now, she’s going to make you suffer later.]
[Spicy rabbit heads are delicious, I won’t lie. But I stopped eating them ever since I got a pet rabbit.]
Renee Jennings also felt that Jay’s parents weren’t very reasonable elders; otherwise, they wouldn’t have done something like suddenly reducing the bride price.
"Dudu, did you hear Jay and his parents talking about reducing Maisy’s bride price?"
"Of course I heard!" Dudu said angrily. "That’s what they were talking about when they woke me up! No, you have to get Maisy to feed me something else."
Renee Jennings chuckled. "Alright."
After getting another delicious little treat, Dudu wasn’t quite so angry anymore.
Once it finished eating, Renee Jennings asked the same question again.
Dudu blinked its eyes and fell into a memory.
Yesterday morning, after Maisy went to work, Jay’s parents checked out of their hotel and came over with their luggage to have lunch with Jay.
After lunch, Jay’s parents went into Maisy and Jay’s room for an afternoon nap.
By the time Dudu was ready for its own nap, Jay’s parents were already awake. They had turned on the TV but weren’t watching it, talking loudly on the phone instead.
Dudu was very annoyed and made protesting noises several times, but it was no use.
Jay’s mother pointed at it and said, "Why are you still keeping a rabbit?"
"Maisy’s the one who wanted it," Jay explained.
Jay’s mother frowned, displeased. "Why keep a rabbit? Such a spendthrift, wasting money."
Jay: "Girls just like having little pets."
"This thing would be better as a meal," Jay’s mother said. "Why don’t I take it home and make spicy rabbit heads? They’re incredibly delicious."
Jay looked helpless. "You can’t do that. Maisy would be furious if she found out."
"Honestly, raising such useless things," Jay’s mother said with a look of disdain. "You’d be better off saving that money to raise a child."
"Speaking of which, I don’t think Maisy has had her period in a while." Jay frowned slightly. "I wonder if she’s pregnant."
"Pregnant?" Jay’s mother’s eyes lit up, and she immediately said, "Jay, I don’t think we can give Maisy’s family the bride price we promised yesterday."
"Why?" Jay asked, confused.
"Think about it. When your older brother married your sister-in-law, we only gave 68,000," Jay’s mother said with a troubled expression. "If we give Maisy 168,000, I’m worried your brother and his wife will have a problem with it."
"But we already promised Maisy’s parents yesterday," Jay frowned. "Besides, I’m the one paying the bride price. My brother and his wife have no reason to object."
Jay’s mother said exasperatedly, "Are you stupid? If we can give less, of course we should give less. And didn’t you just say she might be pregnant? If she is, she has even less ground to negotiate with us."
Jay was still conflicted. "I don’t think we can put it that way."
"Just listen to me. We’re changing the bride price to 88,000, and for the gold, buying 80,000 or 100,000 worth is fine," Jay’s mother said. "If you’re too embarrassed to tell Maisy, I’ll do it."
"Let me think about it," Jay said, his brow deeply furrowed.
’How am I supposed to tell Maisy they’re cutting the amount by so much?’
After a while, Jay’s mother pressed him, "Jay, have you made up your mind?"
"I’m worried Maisy won’t accept it." A hint of disapproval showed on Jay’s face. "It’s only a difference of a hundred thousand yuan. There’s no need to do this."
"You!" Jay’s mother looked angry. "A hundred thousand is not a small amount! I’ve already figured it out for you. Just tell her you need to save the money to buy an apartment in Zenvia."
"Fine," Jay said helplessly. "Then you guys can tell Maisy."
Dudu’s recollection ended there. It looked at Maisy. "And that’s what happened. After that, Maisy came home."
Maisy found this completely absurd, her brows knitting together tightly. "Dudu, are you saying Jay’s parents slept in our room yesterday afternoon?"
Dudu nodded its head. "Yes."
"Jay didn’t even tell me!" Maisy couldn’t accept them sleeping in her bed. "I didn’t even change the sheets last night."
[Yeah, that’s pretty gross, but the important issue right now is the bride price!]
[No no no, the most important question is, girl, are you actually pregnant???]
