Chapter 277: "Don’t Touch My Sister.
Chapter 277: Chapter 277: "Don’t Touch My Sister.
The car sped down the road as Diana Jennings’s phone rang again.
The roast duck shop owner was calling again.
"Put it on speaker," Renee Jennings reminded her, then freed a hand to tap on her own phone a few times.
Diana Jennings answered the phone and put it on speaker. "Hello?"
The roast duck shop owner’s urgent voice came from the phone. "So, what’s the deal? Hurry up and send me the money, or I’m calling the cops!"
"What’s the rush?" Renee Jennings said coolly. "Go ahead and call the police if you have the guts."
The roast duck shop owner was silent for a few seconds before saying, "Look, you’re young. I don’t want to make things ugly. I’m trying to give you a chance."
"Hang up," Renee Jennings said.
Diana Jennings immediately hung up the phone and opened her payment app’s transaction screen. "But I know I just paid."
"It’s okay, sis. We’ll find out when we get there," Renee Jennings said in a calm voice. "Something’s definitely wrong with that roast duck shop."
Diana Jennings bit her lip, looking apologetic. "I’m sorry, Renee. I can’t believe I had to call you and make you come all the way back."
"Sis, what are you talking about?" Renee Jennings gave her a helpless look. "If you keep talking like that, I’m actually going to get mad."
"Okay, okay, don’t be mad. I’ll stop," Diana Jennings said, then sighed quietly to herself, feeling both guilty and ashamed.
’I’m such a useless older sister.’
Renee Jennings found a parking spot and stopped the car. She said to Diana Jennings, "Sis, I’ll go into his shop first and pretend to buy something. When it’s time to pay, you come over."
"Okay." Diana Jennings nodded seriously. "I understand."
Renee Jennings put on a mask, got out of the car, and walked straight toward Wright’s Roast Duck.
She had the owner weigh out a portion of duck meat, and as she scanned the code to pay, she made a point of confirming with him, "Is the receiving account Wright & Co.?"
"It’s Wright’s," the roast duck shop owner replied.
"Are you sure the money is being paid to Wright & Co.?" Renee Jennings asked again.
The roast duck shop owner frowned and said vaguely, "It’s Wright’s. Are you buying this or not?"
Renee Jennings: "Wright’s, or Wright & Co.?"
The roast duck shop owner stared at Renee Jennings, a bad feeling slowly creeping into his heart. "Forget it, forget it. I’m not selling to you."
He reached out, preparing to take back the QR code sign.
But Renee Jennings beat him to it, snatching the QR code sign. Her gaze was icy as she stared him down. "This is your shop’s QR code, right?"
"What are you doing with my QR code?" The roast duck shop owner frowned, feeling more and more like something was wrong. "Are you here to buy something or to cause trouble?"
Diana Jennings came to Renee Jennings’s side and confronted the owner, her face cold. "You kept calling me, saying I didn’t pay, but I have the payment record right here."
She held up her phone, the screen showing the transaction on her bill. "Open your eyes and see for yourself."
"Hold on," the roast duck shop owner said quickly. "We’ll talk about your issue in a minute."
He sized up the masked Renee Jennings and rudely tried to shoo her away. "Give me back the QR code now. Don’t stand here and interfere with my business."
"It looks to me like you don’t want to be in business anymore." Renee Jennings’s brow furrowed, her fair face filled with displeasure. "To think you’d scam your customers like this."
"What are you talking about?" The roast duck shop owner’s eyes flickered slightly as he said irritably, "I don’t know what you mean. Just get out of here."
He even came out from behind the counter and reached out to shove Renee Jennings.
"What do you think you’re doing?" Diana Jennings hurriedly pushed him away, her face flushed with anger. "Don’t you touch my sister!"
"Your sister?" The roast duck shop owner looked at her in surprise. "She’s your sister?"
Diana Jennings glared at him, furious. "Cut the crap. Why did you keep saying I didn’t pay?"
A moment ago, the owner had been worried about Renee Jennings’s identity, afraid she might be an undercover officer running a sting operation.
Now, learning she was Diana Jennings’s sister, he relaxed instantly, his attitude becoming even worse and more arrogant than before. "How can someone so young have such poor character? So delinquent, trying to freeload off my roast duck! Absolutely shameless!"
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Diana Jennings was furious, retorting, "I paid! When did I not pay?"
"You say you paid, so how come I didn’t get it?" the roast duck shop owner said with self-righteous indignation. "You’re obviously just trying to get free roast duck. Is your family that broke?"
Renee Jennings said coldly, "The receiving account on this QR code is Wright & Co. The receiving account on my sister’s payment confirmation is also Wright & Co. You’d better figure out who’s really broke here."
"You’re lying!" A guilty look flashed across the roast duck shop owner’s face. "This is your conspiracy!"
"Weren’t you the one on the phone threatening to call the police?" Renee Jennings eyed him, her gaze cold. "Go on. Call them."
The roast duck shop owner was speechless.
His expression changed. ’Looks like I’m not getting that ninety-eight yuan,’ he thought.
"Forget it, forget it. I can’t be bothered to argue with poor people like you. I’ll just consider it charity for some beggars." The roast duck shop owner reached out to snatch the QR code from Renee Jennings’s hand. "Give it back and get the hell out of my sight. The farther, the better."
Renee Jennings let him snatch the QR code back, her tone light. "Oh, that’s fine. I’ve already called the police for you. They’ll be here soon."
"Why would you call the police?" The owner’s heart skipped a beat. His face changed again, his brow furrowing in anger. "I already said I’d take the loss! What are you calling the police for? Cancel the call, now!"
Renee Jennings sneered. "What are you so afraid of?"
"Nonsense!" The roast duck shop owner felt a growing sense of unease. "What do I have to be afraid of? You’re insane!"
He walked back into the shop, muttering curses, and untied his apron. He was already preparing to close up and run.
"What do you think you’re doing?" Renee Jennings eyed him with a half-smile. "Weren’t you trying to get your ninety-eight yuan back? Weren’t you going to call the police if you didn’t get it? Now that I’ve called them for you, why are you trying to run?"
"Didn’t I already say to just forget it?" the roast duck shop owner said, deeply regretting his actions.
Renee Jennings’s expression was stern. "We can’t just forget it."
The roast duck shop owner frantically packed his things.
Renee Jennings ignored him, glancing down at her phone screen with a slight lift of her brow.
She looked up, and about ten seconds later, a police car pulled up in front of the roast duck shop.
The roast duck shop owner heard the siren, and his hands suddenly trembled. He turned to look, his face instantly turning pale.
’How did the police get here so fast?’
Kyle Morgan and Zachary Conway got out of the police car, walked over to Renee Jennings, and smiled. "Renee, what’s going on?"
"This roast duck shop is scamming customers," Renee Jennings said. "He has a QR code in his shop, but after a customer pays, he calls them and says he never received the money, telling them to pay again."
"Officer," the roast duck shop owner said, extremely nervous, stuttering out a rebuttal, "That’s not true. Sh-she’s lying. I’ve never done anything like that."
"Where’s the payment QR code?" Kyle Morgan’s expression turned serious as he sized up the owner.
The roast duck shop owner quickly brought out the QR code from before. "Officer, this is my shop’s QR code. It’s the same merchant account as the one on her phone. I never said those things."
