Renee Jennings and Sawyer drove to the ecological farm together.
She had called Kyle Morgan ahead of time, and just as the car stopped, he was walking out.
He brought the little mouse, Jerry, out from the car, cradling him in his palm as he handed him to Renee.
"Thank you." Renee took the little mouse, Jerry, wrapping him in her jacket. "How are things on your end?"
Kyle Morgan said, "Don’t worry, we’ve pretty much handled it."
"Okay." Renee nodded. "I’ll take Jerry to the vet first then."
"Alright." Kyle Morgan looked at Sawyer. "You go with Renee."
"Got it." Sawyer agreed. "You guys be safe."
The nearest veterinary hospital was seventeen kilometers away.
The whole way there, Renee comforted the little mouse. "Little Jerry, does it hurt?"
The little mouse, Jerry, replied, "It hurts a little... but I can bear it."
Renee furrowed her brow and said softly, "Don’t be scared. We’re almost at the vet’s."
Sawyer sped up a little.
When they arrived at the hospital, Sawyer went to find a parking spot while Renee rushed inside with Jerry.
The receptionist heard the wind chime tinkle, looked up to see someone arrive, and stood with a smile. "Hello, how can I help you?"
Renee said urgently, "Hello, my mouse was hit by a stool. He’s in a lot of pain, and I’d like to get an X-ray to check for fractures or internal injuries."
"Of course." The receptionist nodded. "I’ll register you now. What’s the mouse’s name?"
"Jerry."
"Okay." The receptionist handed her a form. "Please scan the code to pay, then wait outside the X-ray room for your number to be called."
As she finished speaking, she stared at the mouse Renee was holding, a flash of surprise in her eyes. "Is this the mouse you’re keeping?"
’Isn’t that a common shrew? The kind of stinking vermin everyone wants to kill on sight?’
"Yes." Renee took out her phone, scanned the code to pay, and turned to walk toward the X-ray room.
The receptionist watched her go, her eyes full of doubt.
’What is this girl thinking? Of all the pet mice out there, she chooses to keep a shrew?’
Sawyer parked the car and came to find Renee.
When they took Jerry into the X-ray room, the vet was also taken aback for a moment. "This... Is this a shrew you’re keeping as a pet?"
"Not exactly," Renee said calmly. "Could you please examine him first?"
"Alright." The vet didn’t say anything else and took Jerry in for the examination.
Renee and Sawyer waited outside.
After the X-rays, the vet explained that Jerry had suffered internal injuries from a heavy impact and needed to be hospitalized for observation.
"Okay." Renee nodded slightly. "Let’s get him admitted then."
She looked at Jerry and said softly, "Little Jerry, you just stay here and get better, okay? There’s no need to be scared."
"I know," Jerry responded in a weak voice. "Don’t worry about me, Renee."
"You’re so brave." After paying the hospital fees, Renee and Sawyer headed back to the police station.
On the way, she received a call from Henry Stark.
"Renee, I heard from Kai that a mouse was injured. How is he?" he asked from the other end of the line.
Renee said gently, "Jerry has internal injuries. He’s being kept at the veterinary hospital for observation."
Henry Stark: "Okay. Are you still at the vet’s?"
"We’re on our way back to the station. What about you?"
"Same. See you in a bit."
Several police transport vehicles brought the poached wild animals back to the station.
The first thing Renee did was go look for the baby macaque, Yumi.
She found Yumi in one of the vehicles.
She was in a cage, her little body trembling.
Renee had someone take the cage down.
After the cage was opened, Yumi remained huddled inside, motionless.
Renee knelt in front of the cage and spoke in the gentlest voice she could manage. "Hello, Yumi. I’m a friend of your mother, Annie."
"Mommy..." Yumi murmured, looking at her and asking cautiously, "Where is my mommy?"
Renee said softly, "Annie has been looking for you everywhere. How about I take you to her?"
"Really?" Yumi’s eyes were filled with unease. "You won’t trick Yumi, will you?"
Renee replied, "No, I won’t trick you. What can I do to make you believe me?"
Yumi blinked, and her small, furry body inched forward. "Yumi... Yumi trusts you."
Renee’s eyes brightened as she reached out a hand to her. "Thank you."
She held Yumi in her arms and asked, "After the bad people took you, did they keep you in a cage the whole time?"
"Yes." Yumi nodded her little head. "It was so scary. They even took Yumi to a human’s house."
Renee frowned slightly, puzzled. "Why did they take you to a human’s house?"
Remembering it, Yumi was still frightened, and her little body began to tremble slightly.
"They were going to eat Yumi..."
"It’s okay, don’t be scared." Renee gently stroked her. "You’re safe now."
"Yumi knows." She nuzzled Renee with her furry head. "You’re a good human. You smell so nice."
"Is that so?" Renee smiled, then continued to ask, "And what happened after that? How did Yumi get away from the human’s house?"
Yumi said, "Some humans started arguing, I think about money. Then they took Yumi away again."
Renee guessed that the two parties couldn’t agree on a price.
’It’s a good thing they couldn’t agree, or else Yumi would probably be... ’
After a moment, Yumi asked in a small voice, "When can you take Yumi to find Mommy?"
"I can take you right now." Renee carried her into the main office.
Henry Stark was just coming out of an interrogation room when he saw her holding a baby macaque. "Is that Yumi?"
"Yes." Renee nodded. "I’m about to take her to the wildlife protection base to find Annie."
Hearing this, Henry Stark raised his wrist to check the time. "It’s ten o’clock. That’s a bit late. I’ll go with you."
"It’s fine," Renee said. "Don’t you still have people to interrogate? I can go by myself."
"No." Henry Stark didn’t feel comfortable with her driving on such a remote road alone. "I’ll have Sawyer and Zachary Conway go with you."
Seeing his insistence, Renee agreed. "Okay."
The three of them drove to the wildlife protection base.
When Annie saw her baby, Yumi, her eyes filled with tears.
The mother and child held each other and cried for a long while.
Watching this scene, Sawyer couldn’t help but start crying too. "This is so touching."
She turned her head to look at Renee and said through her tears, "Renee, you’re amazing!"
"It wasn’t me." Renee’s eyes were also a little misty, a faint smile touching her lips. "It was everyone."
"Don’t be so modest." Sawyer affectionately linked her arm with Renee’s. "I think you’re absolutely amazing."
Zachary Conway also said softly, "I think so too."
Sawyer laughed. "Did you hear that, Renee? Kian Cole thinks you’re amazing too."
Annie brought her baby, Yumi, over to Renee.
Renee knelt to look at them and said with a smile, "You have to be happy from now on, no more crying."
"Renee..." Annie and Yumi threw themselves forward to hug her. "Thank you!"
