The Rising Phoenix

Chapter 1090: Thought Bai Xifeng Disappeared

Chapter 1090: Chapter 1090: Thought Bai Xifeng Disappeared

Cerberus instinctively adjusted his gait the moment he felt his master lay down, making his steps even steadier and smoother so that she could sleep without feeling a single bump along the dirt road.

Bai Xifeng happily wrapped both arms around one of Cerberus’s thick, fluffy necks like a giant sleeping pillow before closing her eyes. Within only a few short breaths, she had already drifted completely off into a deep, peaceful sleep. Cerberus simply continued moving forward quietly at the front of the line, keeping his rhythmic pace careful and steady so as not to disturb her peaceful rest.

"...Honestly, I can’t even see Xifeng anymore." Ning Shoukai suddenly commented from atop his wolf, looking toward Cerberus with a smirk.

Zhang Zhenyu, who happened to overhear those words through the open window of his carriage, immediately lifted the small silk curtain and looked outside in concern.

"What do you mean by that, Young Master Ning?" Zhang Zhenyu asked, looking genuinely worried.

He quickly searched around the group before his anxious gaze landed directly on Cerberus. Sure enough, from his position in the carriage, he could not see Bai Xifeng sitting on the three-headed wolf’s massive back at all! His expression immediately changed, his eyes widening in panic.

"Y-Young Lady Bai... Where on earth did she go?!" Zhang Zhenyu asked nervously, half-expecting her to have fallen off into the brush.

Seeing his intensely anxious reaction, Xie Lanying could not help but chuckle softly, shaking her head.

"Sir Zhang, you really don’t need to worry yourself." Xie Lanying pointed toward Cerberus with a reassuring smile. "She is still right there."

"Huh? She is?" Zhang Zhenyu asked in surprise.

"She is fast asleep." Xie Lanying laughed amusedly. "She is lying completely flat down on Cerberus’s back. From your lower angle inside the carriage, you just can’t see her behind his high shoulders."

Only then did Zhang Zhenyu let out a long, heavy sigh of relief, patting his chest.

"Oh... I see now." Zhang Zhenyu could not help but smile bitterly to himself.

Young Lady Bai truly was entirely different from ordinary, high-tier cultivators. While everyone else remained hyper-alert and on guard during the wilderness journey, she was peacefully sleeping on the back of a terrifying, king-rank three-headed wolf as though she were resting on the softest feather bed in the world!

The group continued travelling peacefully through the quiet forest trail. Several more relaxing hours passed without a single incident or monster attack along the road.

Eventually, as noon approached, Zhang Zhenyu instructed his coachman to pull over and stop beside a clear, bubbling stream. The horses pulling the heavy carriage had been running continuously for hours and desperately needed time to rest their legs. They also needed fresh water and feed before continuing the second leg of the trip.

The young cultivators’ contracted beasts also welcomed the brief, relaxing break after maintaining such a slow, restrained pace for so long. Cerberus gradually came to a smooth stop right beside the cool water.

Feeling the continuous movement cease beneath her, Bai Xifeng slowly began waking up from her deep, cozy sleep. She lazily sat up on Cerberus’s back, letting out a soft hum before looking around the sunny clearing with half-lidded, drowsy eyes. She casually scratched the back of her messy hair, rubbed both of her eyes several times with her knuckles, and let out a long, unrestrained yawn.

"Mmm..."

Her soft expression was still full of adorable drowsiness, making her look completely different from the cold, calm, and decisive young woman who had effortlessly annihilated a group of hardened mercenaries only a few short hours earlier.

Seeing Bai Xifeng’s deeply sleepy yet undeniably adorable appearance, Xie Lanying and the others could only exchange helpless, fond smiles. Their unbelievably powerful, almost legendary friend was truly an invincible sleepyhead whenever she had the precious chance to catch up on her rest.

"Is it time to eat yet?" Bai Xifeng asked, rubbing her eyes as she lightly hopped down from Cerberus’s broad back.

"You can have a few quick snacks first." Xie Lanying replied with a warm smile, reaching into her bag. "We are only taking a brief thirty-minute break here. There is a decent trading town not far ahead on the map, and we plan to stay there in a proper inn for the night."

"Oh... That’s fantastic!" Bai Xifeng’s eyes immediately lit up with bright enthusiasm. "There should definitely be a good restaurant in a town like that. I want to order a huge feast, buy lots of takeout, and store it all inside my spatial storage rune. That way, we would not have to cook every single meal from scratch during the rest of our long journey!"

"Honestly, I think that is a brilliant idea."

"I second that."

Everyone nodded in enthusiastic agreement, already anticipating the delicious town food.

After resting beside the clear stream for about half an hour and letting the carriage horses drink their fill, they packed up their gear once more and resumed their journey along the forest road.

This time, having caught up on her sleep, Bai Xifeng no longer felt groggy. Sitting comfortably and upright on Cerberus’s back, she quietly observed the scenic wilderness while occasionally, instinctively scanning their surroundings out of pure habit.

Suddenly, her calm expression drastically changed! Her sharp, razor-focused eyes caught sight of a faint, unnatural metallic glint almost completely hidden beneath a pile of fallen leaves on the dirt road directly ahead.

"Stop right now!" Bai Xifeng shouted, her clear voice ringing through the quiet forest like thunder.

The sudden, urgent warning startled everyone in the group. The alertness of the carriage driver kicked in immediately as he pulled hard on the leather reins, straining his arms to force the heavy horses to a sudden halt.
