On the official road outside the mountain pass, Gu Jiao waited until she saw Shangguan Yan’s carriage approaching.

She patted the Black Wind King gently, then strode forward and stepped onto the carriage.

Shangguan Yan’s eyes were red, clearly from crying earlier out of worry for Shangguan Qing.

However, her emotions had since stabilized, and she was able to speak calmly with Gu Jiao now.

She reached out, took Gu Jiao’s hand, and had her sit down beside her. “JiaoJiao, tell me, what exactly happened?”

Gu Jiao glanced back.

Without missing a beat, Shangguan Yan said with a composed expression, “General Xiao, mount up. I have matters to discuss with both you and General Xiao.”

Marquis Xuanping also boarded the carriage.

Gu Jiao explained everything about Ghost Mountain to the two of them, focusing on three critical points——Shangguan Qing’s current situation, Xuanyuan Qi’s survival, and the thousand lives waiting beneath the underground tunnel.

In the letter, Gu Jiao had only mentioned Shangguan Qing, so Shangguan Yan was completely unprepared to hear that Xuanyuan Qi was involved as well.

“My second uncle is still alive… he’s actually alive… and he even had a son…”

Shangguan Yan had never known about the Shadow Division. She had truly believed Xuanyuan Qi had died all those years ago.

“He’s Jing Kong’s master.” Gu Jiao said.

“So Jing Kong is also… a child of the Xuanyuan Family…” Although Shangguan Yan had long harbored suspicions, she had never been able to confirm it in her heart. “Where is Zheng’er now?”

Gu Jiao replied, “He set out ahead of us with twenty thousand troops and a portion of the city’s supply wagons.”

Shangguan Yan lowered her voice and asked, “Second Uncle… he’s still not out of danger, is he?”

Gu Jiao nodded regretfully. “That’s right.”

“Gongsun Yu!” Shangguan Yan clenched her fists tightly, her voice turning cold with rage.

Marquis Xuanping, who had remained silent until now, suddenly spoke up. “Two questions. First, where did Old Gu go? Second, how did Qing’er end up at Ghost Mountain? Shangguan Yan, didn’t you say he was safely staying at the estate outside Shengdu?”

“I…” Shangguan Yan opened her mouth to explain.

Marquis Xuanping raised his hand and made a gesture to stop her. “That’s enough. No need to explain. I understand now.”

The two looked at him in utter confusion. What exactly do you understand?

Marquis Xuanping could barely contain his emotion as he said, “The bond between father and son is unbreakable. He must have come all this way to find me.”

To search for his father across a thousand miles, what a devoted and filial son!

Gu Jiao: “……”

Shangguan Yan: “……”

It was only at daybreak that Wang Man sounded the gong to signal the end of battle, and at this moment, he was still on his way to join them.

Mu Qingchen was under his command as well.

While waiting for the two to arrive, Marquis Xuanping and Shangguan Yan swiftly familiarized themselves with the deployment of the Jin army and drafted a preliminary battle plan.

Gu Jiao’s Black Wind Cavalry, along with Liao Chen’s Shadow Division, would launch a surprise attack on the thirty thousand Black Cavalry from the Han Family, with the battle site designated as the southern city gate.

Marquis Xuanping would lead fifty thousand infantry, including the archery units, to assault the eighty thousand Jin troops stationed at the northern city gate.

Wang Man would command thirty thousand troops to strike the eastern city gate, where they would face forty thousand Jin soldiers.

Lastly, Chang Wei would take thirty thousand city guards and make a detour to attack Pucheng’s western gate, where twenty thousand Jin troops were positioned.

The rest of the forces would remain in Quyang City, both to defend against a possible counterattack by the Liang army and to guard against a surprise assault should the Jin army suffer defeat.

In the borderlands during the tenth month, the wind blew cold and desolate, whistling through the barren landscape.

After finalizing the entire battle strategy, Shangguan Yan stayed behind to wait for the arrival of Wang Man’s main army, while Gu Jiao and Marquis Xuanping led their troops ahead to advance first.

The moment the two of them mounted their respective warhorses, a tall and imposing figure charged forward on horseback, exuding an aura of fierce energy and unrestrained boldness.

“Hey! You two are completely lacking in loyalty! Heading off to battle all on your own! Just left me abandoned in the infirmary camp! That’s just plain heartless!”

It was Tang Yueshan.

“You were injured.” Gu Jiao said matter-of-factly.

Tang Yueshan shot back irritably, “You call that an injury? That was just a mosquito bite!”

Gu Jiao's face darkened as she glared at him coldly.

Little henchmen, watch your tone, or I’ll give you a shot you won’t forget!

Tang Yueshan cleared his throat awkwardly and said, “The poison’s already been neutralized, so I’m totally fine now. I don’t care what you say. I’m going too!”

By nature, he was a battle-hungry kind of person. Letting him idle around in the infirmary camp? Not a chance!

“Then you can follow me.” Marquis Xuanping said without fuss.

Tang Yueshan hesitated for a moment, then complained with a note of disdain, “You've already got Chang Jing with you, what do you need me for? When I’m with you, I can’t even unleash my full power as the Supreme Commander——ahh!”

His reins were suddenly yanked away by Marquis Xuanping.

……

In Pucheng, at the City Lord’s residence.

Yue Liuyi had gone out to the courtyard early that morning to play with her newly acquired Black Cavalry mount.

Despite the name, not all the Black Cavalry horses were black. For instance, the one ridden by her Lord was dark brown, while hers was a vibrant chestnut.

She happily rode her new steed and took a full lap around the City Lord’s residence, basking in delight.

When she saw Gongsun Yu returning from the military camp with Zhu Zhangkuang and several commanding officers in tow, she cheerfully dismounted and called out, “My Lord!”

Gongsun Yu gave a small nod. Since she was a young girl, he naturally treated her with more leniency than the rough and gruff men under his command.

He said, “It’s still early. Why not sleep a little more?”

“Nope! I want to go riding!” she said mischievously, her eyes sparkling. “I heard you caught a few more prisoners. So... could I possibly have them?”

Gongsun Yu responded generously, “Once we’ve finished interrogating them, they’re yours.”

Yue Liuyi beamed. “Wonderful! More new recruits to test my traps!”

Zhu Zhangkuang involuntarily shivered.

Judging by that innocent, carefree smile, anyone would think she was a harmless and naïve little girl.

However, he had personally witnessed her use mechanical devices to slowly torture people to death.

She was a little devil in human form.

Suddenly recalling something, Yue Liuyi stomped her foot in frustration and huffed, “Why hasn’t Xie Hangzhou returned yet? Just three hundred ghost soldiers and he’s taking forever to handle it? So useless! My Lord, I’ll go help him!”

“Mm.” Gongsun Yu replied, granting her permission.

Yue Liuyi grinned with excitement, swung herself onto her horse, and was just about to gallop out of the manor when a guard hurriedly entered, his face filled with urgency. He saluted Gongsun Yu and reported, “Reporting! Our scouts have spotted movement from the Yan army along the official road! A large cavalry force is headed straight toward Pucheng!”

Before Gongsun Yu could respond, Yue Liuyi was already laughing coldly, “The Yan army? They’ve got guts, I’ll give them that! We just killed their Grand General Xuanyuan yesterday, and today they already show up to seek revenge? Truly fearless!”

Gongsun Yu asked calmly, “How many troops?”

“Approximately... thirty thousand.” the guard replied.

Yue Liuyi scoffed dismissively. “Only thirty thousand cavalry? My Lord, give me twenty thousand men, and I’ll ride out and slaughter them!”

Gongsun Yu didn’t rush to give an answer. Instead, he turned back to the guard and asked, “Is it the Xuanyuan Family’s Black Wind Cavalry?”

“It appears so!” the guard said. “They’re flying the Xuanyuan Family’s eagle banner!”

Yue Liuyi’s eyes lit up with excitement. “My Lord, let me go cut down their eagle banner!”

Gongsun Yu said calmly, “There’s no need to use the State of Jin’s forces for such a matter. The Han Family has long wanted to prove themselves against the Black Wind Cavalry, so let the Han Family show me what they’re capable of.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
