"He's... dead?"

Yue Liuyi stared at the lifeless Xuanyuan Qi lying on the ground, then unsheathed the dagger from her waist with a sharp and irritable huff. "He wounded me. I'm cutting off his hand!"

"Little Liu." Gongsun Yu called out to her mildly, stopping her in her tracks.

Yue Liuyi halted in midair with the dagger raised, her hand frozen. "What is it, my Lord?"

Hearing the intensifying sound of hooves pounding closer in the distance, Gongsun Yu said calmly, "We’re leaving."

Yue Liuyi turned her gaze toward the far end of the official road, where a man was galloping toward them at full speed, followed closely by a massive army. She furrowed her brows in frustration and reluctantly sheathed her dagger. "Letting that bastard off easy!"

With a swift movement, she leapt onto her horse.

Gongsun Yu had not come with a large army, only twenty archers accompanied him, so they were at a clear disadvantage in terms of military strength.

But the man they had just taken down had appeared to be formidable. Killing him was undoubtedly a heavy psychological blow to the forces of Great Yan.

As Yue Liuyi rode alongside Gongsun Yu, she asked curiously, "My Lord, who was that big guy just now?"

Gongsun Yu looked up toward the sky, where dark clouds were rolling in like crashing waves. "The Grand General of the State of Yan... Xuanyuan Qi."

"Xuanyuan Qi? Weren’t all the Xuanyuan Family members supposed to be dead?" Yue Liuyi murmured to herself.

When she looked up again, Gongsun Yu and the twenty archers had already ridden ahead.

She hurriedly lashed her whip against her mount, quickly catching up and calling out to Gongsun Yu, "My Lord, your horses are amazing! I’ve never seen ones like them before!"

Gongsun Yu replied in his usual mild tone, "They’re Black Cavalry mounts from the Han Family of the State of Yan."

With a mischievous sparkle in her eyes, Yue Liuyi chirped, "Black Cavalry? The Xuanyuan Family had a Black Wind Cavalry, and the Han Family has a Black Cavalry? How interesting! My Lord, I want one too!"

Gongsun Yu said simply, "There are more at the City Lord’s residence. You can pick one when we return."

Yue Liuyi beamed brightly. "Alright!"

Their group rode off, disappearing into the dust behind them.

As the last sliver of daylight faded from the sky, the thick black clouds swallowed the night whole. Thunder rolled across the heavens, lightning cracked suddenly through the darkness, and a sharp west wind transformed in an instant into a violent storm.

The grasses and trees at the mountain pass swayed wildly, as if the countless heroic spirits of the borderlands were silently weeping in sorrow.

Soaked to the bone and shivering in the cold rain, Yue Liuyi let out a snort of disdain. "This isn’t a good day for siege warfare. Let’s come back and fight them another day!"

Gongsun Yu, astride his horse, remained silent, his expression cold and stern, like a deity descending from the heavens.

The final Grand General of the Xuanyuan Family had ultimately fallen by his hand.

With his death, the legendary tale of the Xuanyuan Family came to a complete and final end.

The great State of Yan, sooner or later, would fall into the hands of Jin.

By the time Liao Chen's horse reached the mountain pass, Gongsun Yu and the Jin army had already retreated.

He nearly threw himself off the horse, stumbling and scrambling through the mud drenched by the rain, crawling on his knees toward the lifeless body of Xuanyuan Qi.

As he looked upon the man covered in blood, pierced through the chest by a long spear, tears burst uncontrollably from his eyes.

"Why... why..."

The wound that had taken twenty years to begin to heal was torn open once more, mercilessly, and it felt as though his heart was being ripped in two.

He reached out, wanting so desperately to hold his father, to embrace him, but he was afraid... afraid it would hurt him.

The injury was so severe... it must have hurt so much...

He knelt before his father’s body, his entire frame trembling uncontrollably.

Suppressing the deep agony that clawed at his soul, his tears fell heavily to the ground, one after another.

"Why... when I finally get to see you..."

"Why couldn’t you wait just a little longer..."

"Why is it that every time... you have to leave me behind..."

"Open your eyes... look at me..."

"Look at Zheng’er... Zheng’er has grown up..."

Liao Chen wept bitterly on his knees, his fingers digging so hard into the mud that blood began to seep from beneath his nails, spreading in crimson rivulets across the ground.

The heavy rain broke apart a tree at the mountain pass that had been slashed by sword qi. With the tree gone, no longer blocking the view, everyone atop the city tower could now see everything that was happening below.

They had all believed that the mountain pass was defended by a small military force, which was why not a single Jin soldier had managed to break through.

Who could have known... it had only been one man.

That man had used nothing but his own flesh and blood to defend the pass, holding off a full force of nine thousand Jin troops by himself!

His body was riddled with arrows, pierced by countless blades, and in the center of his chest, a long spear had run straight through.

What kind of indomitable, unyielding willpower did it take for one person to forget about life and death, to transcend even the fear of death itself?

Every single person watching was moved to tears.

They did not know who that man was, but each of them could feel the overwhelming force of his spirit, an unshakable will radiating from him.

It was the undying battle soul of the State of Yan!

Ye Qing stood atop the city tower, staring intently at the two figures kneeling in the heavy rain, father and son, who had not even had the chance to speak a final farewell.

His heart swelled with an overwhelming tide of complex emotions.

Master, the divination you performed has come to pass.

Every part of it has come true, without a single deviation.

The soul of Xuanyuan has fallen beneath the sword of Gongsun Yu.

But Master, if you already foresaw the outcome, why did you send me to the borderlands in the first place?

Was it just so I could witness this tragedy unfold with my own eyes?

With my abilities, I couldn’t change anything, not even prevent a single part of it.

“Xuanyuan’s soul... was not meant to perish.”

The melancholy voice of the Imperial Advisor echoed in his mind, and Ye Qing's eyes grew sharp with sudden determination, as though something had shifted in his heart.

He clenched his fists tightly, then launched himself into the air, leaping down from the city tower.

“Master Ye!”

General Ji’s expression darkened with shock.

He reached out to grab him, but it was too late; he didn’t even manage to touch the edge of Ye Qing’s robe.

The flowing blue robe of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall billowed like a lotus dyed in ink as it danced against the wind and rain.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
