Gu Jiao was dressed in the armor of the Jin army, so the other party was likely just conducting a routine inquiry.

Gu Jiao gently patted the Black Wind King’s back. The imposing beast, sensing her signal, withdrew its dominant, regal aura and drooped its head, appearing utterly exhausted and worn out.

When it came to acting skills, no one could deliver a performance quite as painfully eye-catching as Gu Jiao.

Except, perhaps... for Xuanyuan Qi.

A cavalryman quickened his pace and rode straight toward Gu Jiao, coming to a halt about six feet away from her. He scrutinized her from head to toe before asking in a questioning tone, “Which battalion are you from? Under whose command?”

Coincidentally, the Jin dialect phrases Gu Jiao had just memorized earlier happened to include this very line.

Maintaining an expression as calm and steady as still water, Gu Jiao replied confidently to the second question, “I serve under General Liu.”

As for which battalion she was with, she had no idea; her greatest fear was that the man would follow up with, “Which General Liu?”

The cavalryman narrowed his eyes at her suspiciously. “Do you mean General Liu Wei? I don’t recall seeing you before.”

Gu Jiao responded smoothly, “I was just reassigned from General Min Hongyi’s unit. General Min was recently killed in action.”

That last part was the key.

Sure enough, the moment the man heard this piece of news, his expression changed dramatically. “What? General Min was killed?”

Min Hongyi had been ambushed and killed just two nights ago. Clearly, word of it had not yet reached Xincheng.

Gu Jiao said simply, “Yes.”

The cavalryman pressed further. “How did he die?”

Keeping her tone cold and detached, Gu Jiao replied, “I’m not at liberty to say.” In truth, the main reason was that her hastily crammed Jin dialect would likely give her away if she spoke too much.

The cavalryman was a seasoned soldier and not so easily fooled. He furrowed his brows once more and asked suspiciously, “Then what are you doing here? Are you pursuing the killer?”

If she admitted to being on a manhunt, wouldn’t this force of ten thousand troops insist on joining her to hunt down the murderer?

And then how on earth was she supposed to return to Quyang City?

Gu Jiao offered a terse response, choosing her words carefully, “Classified mission. I cannot disclose more.”

Once the word “classified” was invoked, it lent an air of unquestionable authority and secrecy to the matter, making it seem sacred and untouchable.

Combined with Gu Jiao’s open and unflinching demeanor, not a trace of guilt or hesitation to be seen, the cavalryman decided to believe her.

He was just about to say, “Then be on your way,” when another cavalryman rode up.

Judging from the red tassel on his armor, this one was a minor officer.

“What’s going on here?” He asked.

The first cavalryman saluted him and reported, “Deputy General Zhang, sir, this soldier is from General Min’s unit. General Min has been killed, and he’s now been reassigned under General Liu’s command. He’s currently carrying out a classified mission outside the city.”

Deputy General Zhang’s gaze sharpened, turning icy. “Classified missions must be carried out by no fewer than two individuals!”

Was that actually a rule?

The Jin army really operated at such a high level of formality?

As fate would have it, Xuanyuan Qi and Tang Yueshan arrived just in time.

Xuanyuan Qi’s very presence exuded an aura that warned strangers to stay away. He swept a cold, penetrating glance over the two Jin soldiers, and they instantly felt as though a mountain had come crashing down on their shoulders.

“General Liu!” Gu Jiao saluted Xuanyuan Qi with cupped hands.

The visor on Xuanyuan Qi’s helmet was lowered, obscuring his face, but given the identities of the two men, they wouldn’t have dared to look directly at General Liu’s features anyway.

The two of them cupped their hands in salute.

Xuanyuan Qi simply said two words, “Let’s go.”

Gu Jiao promptly and in sync replied, “Yes!”

The three of them then returned the way they had come.

The two cavalrymen were completely baffled, like monks lost in a fog, but didn’t dare to stop them.

They turned their horses around and rode back to rejoin the main force, reporting the situation just now to the commanding officer, General Di.

General Di noted two key points: Min Hongyi had met with an accident, and his subordinate had been taken away by General Liu Wei.

“That’s impossible!” General Di exclaimed.

The two men were momentarily stunned.

General Di frowned deeply and said, “Liu Wei is from the reconnaissance camp, his unit specializes in gathering intelligence. He serves as the eyes and ears of Grand General Gongsun. Why would he want soldiers from Min Hongyi’s command?”

Min Hongyi’s troops were trained for direct combat; they weren’t professional scouts. Even if Liu Wei took them in, they would be of little use to him in intelligence work.

What was even more baffling was why Liu Wei would show up in Quyang City in person. What kind of classified mission could he possibly be carrying out?

He had clearly been riding directly toward them, but after encountering their cavalry, he suddenly turned around and left?

Something about the entire situation felt off and suspicious.

“Are you two absolutely certain that man was General Liu Wei?” General Di questioned with a sharp gaze.

“This…” The two exchanged a hesitant glance.

Deputy General Zhang furrowed his brows and recalled carefully, “He was wearing a helmet, and the visor was down. We couldn’t clearly see his face… but… his build did seem to be noticeably more robust than General Liu Wei’s.”

Ordinarily, subordinates wouldn’t dare question their superiors, but since it was General Di, Liu Wei’s equal in rank, raising the suspicion, Deputy General Zhang felt safe enough to voice that slight inconsistency.

General Di immediately declared, “Something’s not right… Zhang Ren, take the cavalry and pursue them at once!”

“Yes, sir!”

Deputy General Zhang wasted no time, taking five hundred cavalrymen to lead the charge, fanning out along both the main road and the smaller side paths to encircle their targets.

The moment the thunder of hoofbeats echoed from behind them, the three realized with a jolt that their cover had likely been blown. Unfortunately, this stretch of road offered no forest to take shelter in, only a sparse, scattered village lay ahead.

Gu Jiao tightened her grip on the reins. “We can’t head into the village.”

The Jin army was ruthless and utterly unscrupulous, there was no telling what they might do to innocent civilians.

Tang Yueshan said urgently, “But we can’t keep riding straight either. If we do, we’ll end up back at Pucheng! And then we’ll be trapped between enemy forces on both sides. We’ll be doomed for sure!”

Gu Jiao understood that as well. The current situation was extremely disadvantageous to the three of them.

Inside the tunnels, nearly a thousand lives were awaiting reinforcements. With every passing second, the danger to them increased.

They had journeyed all this way with great difficulty, could they really allow themselves to be driven back by ten thousand Jin soldiers?

Gu Jiao yanked hard on the reins. “We can’t go forward anymore!”

And truth be told, escape was no longer an option.

Their horses had traveled all day, braving fatigue and terrain. They were thoroughly spent. It was only a matter of time before the well-rested cavalry of the Jin army caught up.

All three of them brought their mounts to a halt.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
