Shangguan Qing looked at Little Ying beside the woman, snoring softly in her sleep, then turned to glance at the other villagers, fast asleep and unaware. After a brief moment of silence, he made a decision in his heart.

He said solemnly, “I’ll take you somewhere else to deliver the child. Just bear with it a little longer.”

Lady Zhang sobbed, “Won’t… won’t that expose us?”

Shangguan Qing replied, “Many premature babies don’t cry very loudly. If we go far enough, there’s a good chance they won’t hear. And if… if it truly comes to that point, I will personally end it.”

Tang Yueshan was stunned.

He had actually understood what the boy meant.

He looked at Shangguan Qing in disbelief, hardly able to reconcile such cruel words with the youth standing before him.

To this boy, choosing ruthlessness must be far harder than choosing kindness.

But if he didn’t, then over a thousand innocent lives would be lost.

Compared to letting Lady Zhang’s hands be stained with the blood of her own child, he would rather do it himself, shouldering a lifetime of guilt and psychological torment, enduring a shadow that would never be erased for the rest of his days.

Lady Zhang nodded tearfully, unable to speak but clearly understanding the weight of his decision.

Shangguan Qing gently roused an elderly woman from the village, then summoned several ghost soldiers. After giving them a few quiet instructions, the ghost soldiers retrieved an emergency stretcher that had been prepared in advance within the cave and carried Lady Zhang away.

Then Shangguan Qing woke up a middle-aged woman and asked her to look after Lady Zhang’s two children, so that when they woke up, they wouldn’t feel frightened or anxious upon discovering their mother was no longer by their side.

“Did something happen?” The middle-aged woman asked, her voice tinged with unease.

By this time, a few more villagers had gradually awakened. Given their current confinement inside the mountain cave, everyone’s nerves were stretched taut. The slightest noise or disturbance was enough to send their minds spiraling into fear.

Standing calmly under the cool, pearlescent light, Shangguan Qing responded with unwavering composure, “I’ll handle it. Everyone should go back to sleep.”

There was a quiet yet commanding aura about him that instilled trust and belief. The villagers, reassured by his presence, asked no further questions, simply nodding and obediently lying back down to rest.

Tang Yueshan followed him to the place where Lady Zhang was to give birth. It was a small stone chamber situated at least a hundred feet away from the main cavern, originally used as a storage room.

Lady Zhang now lay flat on a stretcher placed on the ground.

The elderly woman was not a professional midwife, but as a woman with more life experience than the men, she at least had some basic knowledge of childbirth.

She remained inside to assist with the delivery, while Shangguan Qing and the others stood vigil outside the stone chamber, maintaining their silent watch.

“Do you have any wood?” The old woman asked, emerging from within.

“What size do you need?” Shangguan Qing inquired immediately.

“Nothing too big.” She replied, “Just something she can bite down on, to muffle the sounds and prevent her from hurting herself during labor.”

Shangguan Qing pulled out the wooden stopper from his water flask. “Would this work?”

The old woman shook her head. “That won’t do.”

He then removed the wooden hairpin from his head. “How about this?”

She shook her head again. “Still no good.”

After a brief hesitation, Shangguan Qing reached into his robe and brought out a very old, worn little wooden dagger, then handed it over to her.

The old woman smiled approvingly. “This one should do just fine.”

With that, she took the dagger and turned back into the small stone chamber to continue assisting the birth.

Tang Yueshan, watching closely, noticed a fleeting trace of wistfulness pass over Shangguan Qing’s expression.

Was that little wooden dagger something precious to him?

It didn’t appear valuable at all, but perhaps it held sentimental worth. Well then, if he liked it that much, once the boy became his godson, he would personally carve ten or even eight more for him!

Lady Zhang’s labor pains had started back in the daytime. Now, even though her cervix was fully dilated, the baby still wouldn’t come.

“Oh dear, this isn’t looking good…”

The old woman came out, her face filled with worry. She turned to Shangguan Qing and said, “It’s a difficult labor…”

Giving birth was like walking through the gates of hell, and once complications like obstructed labor arose, it often meant the risk of losing both mother and child.

Tang Yueshan clenched his fist and struck his palm in frustration, muttering, “If only that girl were here!”

“What happened?”

A familiar youthful voice suddenly rang out from the far end of the passage. The two ghost soldiers immediately went on high alert, drawing their weapons instinctively.

“It’s me.” Gu Jiao said.

Shangguan Qing waved his hand, signaling the ghost soldiers to stand down and make way.

Gu Jiao pushed open a hidden stone door and crawled out from behind it.

She patted the dust off her clothes and said softly, “This place is ridiculously hard to find.”

Shangguan Qing looked at her with suspicion. “Did you come through the back mountain?”

“Of course.” Gu Jiao replied. “What, did you think I walked in through the Jin army’s camp?”

Shangguan Qing couldn’t hide his surprise. “There’s a tunnel in the back mountain? And it leads here?”

“What, you didn’t know?” She said with a slight shrug. Well, to be fair, she hadn’t known either.

She had been wandering around Xuanyuan Qi’s lair out of boredom when she accidentally triggered a mechanism and fell into a hidden tunnel.

She had originally planned to head back the way she came, but as she wandered, she unexpectedly stumbled upon this group.

Tang Yueshan grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward him. “You came at the perfect time! A woman is in labor, and it’s a difficult birth! Go in and have a look!”

“First time or not?” Gu Jiao asked. When the two of them just stared at her blankly, she let out a small sigh and rephrased, “Has she ever given birth before?”

“There were two children before.” Shangguan Qing said in a low voice.

Gu Jiao asked calmly, “When did the symptoms start?”

Shangguan Qing replied, “Not sure about the exact timing. She’s been enduring the pain all along without saying a word.”

“All right, I understand.” Gu Jiao responded and stepped into the small stone chamber where Lady Zhang was giving birth.

Lady Zhang’s face was ashen, and she was biting down hard on a small wooden dagger clenched between her teeth.

There wasn’t a single dry spot left on her body; even the stretcher beneath her had been soaked through by the sweat pouring from her.

“Do you feel like you need to have a bowel movement?” Gu Jiao asked in a soft, steady tone.

Lady Zhang gave a slight nod, her expression taut with pain.

After conducting a quick but thorough examination, Gu Jiao found that the cervix was fully dilated. However, the baby was in an abnormal position.

A cesarean section was out of the question under the current conditions.

Fortunately, the amniotic sac hadn’t fully ruptured yet, and the baby was still able to move inside the uterus. Gu Jiao had once learned a fetal repositioning technique from an old traditional physician in her previous life, and now was the time to put that knowledge to use.

“I hope this works for you.” She whispered.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
