What Gu Jiao had just used was the fifth move of the Xuanyuan Seven Forms. She was more skilled with the first four, while the later ones, though practiced, were rarely used in real combat.

Min Hongyi eyed Gu Jiao warily. “Kid! Who are you from the Xuanyuan Family?!”

Gu Jiao gripped her spear, swept it sideways, and raised it behind her in a slant. She stared at him like a war god, responding, “The one here to take your life.”

Min Hongyi’s temple twitched.

That look in her eyes…

He was only in his early thirties and had visited the State of Yan over a decade ago. Though many years had passed, he still remembered the Xuanyuan warriors vividly.

This kid looked nothing like any member of the Xuanyuan Family, yet that fierce aura on her felt exactly like their bloodthirsty spirit!

In raw power, Gu Jiao was clearly no match for Min Hongyi. But somehow, standing in this forest, she suddenly felt a strangely familiar force.

It sounded mysterious, but perhaps… it came from the remnants of the ghost soldiers’ armor.

That’s right!

Those broken armors!

Realization struck Gu Jiao.

Those soldiers were wearing the battle armor of the fallen Xuanyuan army!

Ghost Mountain… was the Xuanyuan army’s burial ground!

The brave warriors who died in battle never returned home. Their heroic spirits remained forever at the border.

Sorrow welled up in her heart.

But it wasn’t her own emotion.

It was the grief of thousands of Xuanyuan soldiers.

Gu Jiao tightened her grip on the spear and looked across at the general from the State of Jin. “Min Hongyi, offer your life.”

Your death shall honor the countless souls of the Xuanyuan army!

A sense of dread rose in Min Hongyi’s heart.

I’m clearly stronger, so why do I suddenly feel uneasy?

What’s with that look in the kid’s eyes?

Calm on the surface, yet filled with an indescribable killing intent——

“It must be an illusion. There’s no way this kid can kill me!”

He shook off his doubts and swung his blade toward Gu Jiao again.

Gu Jiao unleashed the final two forms. On the seventh strike, her spear pierced his right thigh!

Min Hongyi couldn’t believe this kid had broken through his defense and actually stabbed him!

And she didn’t stop there, she twisted the spear for good measure.

She was clearly getting the hang of this. Smooth and brutal.

Min Hongyi was a powerful warrior, and most of his strength came from his legs. An injured leg meant half his techniques and power were now useless.

But luck hadn’t completely left him. Just as Gu Jiao prepared to finish him off with one final strike, a swordsman suddenly emerged from the forest.

The attacker was highly skilled, his sword aura intense. He seized the moment while Gu Jiao was focused on Min Hongyi and launched a sneak attack!

“Big brother! Watch out!”

Little Black Impermanence shouted with a clenched fist.

Too late. Her spear had already thrust forward. There was no time to react——

The attacker had chosen the exact moment when she couldn’t split her focus!

At the critical moment, a whip lashed out, coiling around Gu Jiao’s flexible waist and yanking her violently backward.

Gu Jiao vanished, just like that Ghost King earlier!

The swordsman landed beside Min Hongyi, glanced at the still-breathing man, then focused intently on his surroundings.

He was a seasoned swordsman. After a brief moment of confusion, he suddenly darted in the direction Gu Jiao had disappeared and slashed midair!

With a loud tearing sound, a black curtain blended into the night was split cleanly down the middle.

The illusion vanished. Gu Jiao, His Highness the Ghost King, the Black and White Impermanence, and even the forest behind them were fully revealed.

“So it was just a trick of the eye!”

The swordsman let out a cold snort. Not giving them any chance to escape, he pushed off a branch and charged at them with his sword drawn!

Gu Jiao sensed his strength was nearly on par with An Hun. He was clearly from the same sect!

It seemed the Sword Lodge wasn’t just allied with the State of Liang. It had ties to the State of Jin as well.

Or perhaps... The Sword Lodge was part of the State of Jin all along, a terrifying hidden force!

A fierce battle was inevitable...

She stepped forward with her spear in hand.

But the Ghost King calmly raised his arm to block her. “Step back.”

Gu Jiao looked at him in shock.

The swordsman said coldly, “None of you will leave here alive tonight!”

His sword flashed like lightning as he slashed toward the man’s head.

“Die!”

The man looked at him calmly, utterly unafraid, and said quietly, “As you wish.”

The swordsman frowned.

In the next instant, the man lifted the firelance hidden beneath his wide sleeve, aimed at the swordsman’s chest, and fired, blasting him off his feet!

Gu Jiao suddenly understood.

Firelance, a basic musket.

Its power couldn’t be resisted by flesh or armor. No wonder he was so confident.

This was probably the first firearm she had seen since arriving in this world.

In fact, firelances had existed since the Southern Song, but she was in a fictional dynasty, so it was hard to say when firelances would have been invented here.

Firelances had great destructive power but poor accuracy. Though they had longer range than bows, skilled archers could still shoot with pinpoint precision, while firelances lost effectiveness beyond fifty paces.

Their effective range was very limited.

But the swordsman had charged in too close, right into the muzzle. Thus, no aim needed.

He collapsed in a pool of blood, dead on the spot.

The man slung the firelance over his shoulder and walked over, oozing arrogance. He kicked the dying swordsman over and looked at him with clear disdain.

“Heaven has a path and you ignored it. Hell has no gate, yet you barged in. It’s called Ghost Mountain for a reason, you just had to tempt fate. Who else should die if not you?”

He glanced the swordsman over and said casually, “Tsk. No saving you now, no point interrogating either. Just die. Don’t expect this Ghost King to make it quick for you.”

But the swordsman wasn’t alone.

Another had used the chaos to flee with the wounded Min Hongyi.

Gu Jiao watched them fade into the night, then suddenly grabbed her rusted spear and hurled it forward with force.

The spear tore through the air with a thunderous whoosh and struck Min Hongyi squarely in the back, piercing his heart!

“Ah——”

That anguished scream was Min Hongyi’s final sound in this world.

I told you, your life stays here.

The Jin army was wiped out. Those who could be killed were killed; the rest were captured. The ghost soldiers began clearing the battlefield.

The man was about to leave too.

With the firelance over his shoulder, he glanced coolly at Gu Jiao and said. “Normally, trespassers in Ghost Mountain die. But since you saved people of the underworld, I’ll spare you. Leave. Don’t ever return.”

He walked past her.

Gu Jiao suddenly called out, “Shangguan Qing!”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
