Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The scout and Chang Wei were tasked with keeping watch for the patrolling soldiers.
For those equipped with snow silkworm thread, cutting through war chariots and siege ladders wasn’t difficult. The real challenge was ensuring that the pieces didn’t crash to the ground and make any noise afterward.
This was Wen Renchong’s area of expertise.
He pointed to several key spots. “Cut along here and here. This way, the war chariot won’t collapse immediately.”
Gu Jiao and Mu Qingchen each held one end of the snow silkworm thread. Mu Qingchen used his qinggong to leap to the opposite side of the war chariot. The two exchanged a glance, then together, sliced down with the thread.
Silent. Effortless. Like cutting through a sponge cake. It was so smooth it was surreal.
Gu Jiao whispered, “Wow.”
Even someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder would have felt healed by that.
Gu Jiao was having an absolutely delightful time…no, wait, she meant the mission was progressing exceptionally smoothly.
“Someone’s coming! Fall back, now!” Chang Wei lowered his voice as he warned them urgently.
Gu Jiao smacked her lips with unfinished satisfaction. “Feels like we barely cut anything.”
Everyone was utterly speechless.
So many war chariots and siege ladders, and we only got in a few cuts. Some of us didn’t even get a turn because you hogged all the cutting for yourself!
“We’re going.” Mu Qingchen once again used his qinggong to leap over, handed the snow silkworm thread back to Gu Jiao, and had her put it away.
Gu Jiao replied, “Oh.”
She slowly began putting it away, and just as everyone relaxed their guard, with a ‘shing’, she sliced one more line into a war chariot!
Mu Qingchen: “…”
By the time the soldiers of the State of Liang patrolled over, they had already made their escape.
Among this group, only Gu Jiao didn’t know how to use qinggong, so Mu Qingchen wrapped an arm around her slender, flexible waist and carried her as they weaved deftly through the various tents in the camp.
Due to his injuries, Chang Wei also couldn’t use qinggong, so Li Shen and Zhao Dengfeng took turns carrying him.
As they passed by a tent lit with a dim oil lamp, Gu Jiao suddenly patted Mu Qingchen’s arm, signaling him to stop.
Mu Qingchen gently landed on the grass.
What is it?
He asked with his eyes.
Gu Jiao pointed toward a tent roughly thirty feet away, silently indicating that she had seen someone enter it.
The rest of the group also came to a halt beside them.
They concealed themselves in the shadows, watching the tent Gu Jiao had pointed out. After thinking it over, she gestured to the group, signaling for the others to leave first while she, Mu Qingchen, Li Shen, and Chang Wei stayed behind.
Though they were reluctant to leave, military orders had to be obeyed.
Zhao Dengfeng, Wen Renchong, and the others melted silently into the night. Meanwhile, Gu Jiao’s group of four quietly moved closer to the tent.
The four of them crouched behind the tent. Gu Jiao, Mu Qingchen, and Chang Wei pressed their ears against the fabric wall.
Li Shen kept watch for any movements nearby.
Inside, voices of men in conversation could be heard.
They were speaking the State of Yan’s language, but clearly, one of the speakers didn’t sound entirely fluent.
The less fluent speaker said, “…Is this your so-called sincerity? Your Great Yan’s Emperor is hunting you down. Without the protection of our State of Liang, you’ll soon become prisoners under his throne.”
Everyone understood immediately.
One was a general of the State of Liang, the other was a rebel from the State of Yan. It had to be either the Han Family or the Nangong Family, though clearly, the latter seemed more likely.
“I want to see your General Chu.”
None of the others recognized that voice, but Chang Wei immediately did. It was the fourth master of the Nangong Family, Nangong Jue.
Both Nangong Ze and Nangong Jue had been stationed at the borders for many years, so Chang Wei was very familiar with them.
The State of Liang general responded, “General Chu has had a long, tiring journey and is already resting.”
Gu Jiao’s internal translator: You’re not important enough, talking to me is already a favor.
Nangong Jue’s tone carried a flash of anger, though it was quickly suppressed. “Do you really think the Black Wind Cavalry is that easy to deal with? I’ll tell you plainly, without assistance from our Nangong Family, with the strength of your troops alone, you’re bound to be defeated by that Xiao Liulang!”
Gu Jiao clenched her little fist. Let’s go! I really am that awesome!
As expected, it was someone from the Nangong Family.
Gu Jiao gave Chang Wei a look of sympathy.
No wonder his face had turned so sour. Just look at that. That was the lord of Great Yan he had sworn loyalty to, a traitor secretly colluding with the enemies from the State of Liang.
The State of Liang general, full of arrogance, snapped, “Spare me your alarmist nonsense. Just because you lot were weak and lost doesn’t mean our State of Liang’s great army is made up of the same ragged, broken remnants as the Nangong Family! That so-called General Chang Wei, if he came to our State of Liang, we wouldn’t even make him a company captain!”
Gu Jiao nodded appreciatively. Beautifully said. Keep going. Tonight, you’re one of us!
The State of Liang general added coolly, “We of the State of Liang have absolutely no need to cooperate with your Nangong Family.”
Nangong Jue let out a cold snort and said, “Aren’t you only looking down on us because we’ve lost our military strength? But as far as I know, our Nangong Family’s General Chang Wei is not dead; he was merely captured, and he’s currently being treated in the city of Quyang. There are nearly sixty thousand troops stationed in Quyang. If Chang Wei leads them and coordinates with you from within, your State of Liang’s plan to capture the city will undoubtedly yield twice the results with half the effort!”
Gu Jiao once again cast a sympathetic glance toward Chang Wei.
On the surface, Chang Wei appeared calm and unshaken, but the blood slowly seeping through the fabric over his chest betrayed the turmoil he was truly feeling inside.
The State of Liang general seemed quite intrigued by this proposal, yet he restrained himself, not wanting to reveal his interest too soon, and instead responded with the utmost tact and negotiation strategy, “Chang Wei deserved to die but didn’t. How can you be so sure he hasn’t already defected to the Black Wind Cavalry?”
Nangong Jue replied with unwavering certainty, “Chang Wei would never betray the Nangong Family!”
The State of Liang general let out a light chuckle. “Oh?”
Nangong Jue could no longer conceal the mockery in his tone. “He was born into a poor, humble background. When my father found him all those years ago, he was a beggar on the side of the street. It was my father who picked him up, took him in, and gave him the chance to join the army. The man may be obstinate, inflexible, and incapable of adapting to changing situations, but at least he is unfailingly loyal to the Nangong Family. You could say he is the most loyal dog we’ve ever raised. Wherever the Nangong Family points, that’s where he bites; he’d throw himself into death and destruction without hesitation!”
Gu Jiao almost rushed out then and there to present Nangong Jue with a bouquet of flowers.
Well said!
Tonight, the title of honorary ally definitely goes to you!
Under normal circumstances, Nangong Jue would never speak so arrogantly and unrestrainedly in front of outsiders. But right now, he had been so thoroughly provoked by the smug arrogance of the State of Liang general that he desperately needed to restore his sense of pride and superiority by belittling others.
Unfortunately, while the speaker might not have meant harm, the listener had certainly taken it to heart.
Outside the tent, Chang Wei’s face had gone completely ashen, as if cast in iron.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
