At the City Lord’s residence, the Nangong Family head was just about to retire for the night when an urgent report from a scout suddenly echoed from outside the courtyard, “City Lord! Something terrible has happened, something terrible!”
Frowning, the Nangong Family head threw on his outer robe and stepped out of his room. Seeing the scout tumble into the courtyard in a panicked mess, he asked in a deep voice, “What has happened to make you panic like this? Have you forgotten all discipline?”
Tears welled in the scout’s eyes as he looked at the family head. “City Lord! General Chang Wei… General Chang Wei…”
The Nangong Family head’s gaze darkened. “What about General Chang Wei?”
Wiping his tears, the scout choked out, “General Chang Wei was killed…by the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry!”
“What?” The Nangong Family head’s expression changed drastically, and he stood frozen for a moment before rejecting the report outright, his voice filled with disbelief. “You must be mistaken. How could General Chang Wei possibly be killed by some boy?”
Such words now seemed hopelessly arrogant. Was that boy an ordinary youth? He had already killed Nangong Li, captured Nangong Ze alive. Was it really so surprising that General Chang Wei fell at his hands too?
Still, the scout understood that the family head wasn’t questioning the boy’s individual strength; it was about the larger picture. This was a full-scale war. The Nangong Family had a clear advantage in military strength. How could they have lost so easily?
Not to mention, General Chang Wei had claimed he had found a way to deal with the Black Wind Cavalry——
The scout spoke anxiously, “City Lord, I’m not mistaken! It’s the absolute truth! Xiao Liulang killed General Chang Wei, and tens of thousands of our troops have been taken prisoner! Xiao Liulang has seized our war chariots and is heading straight for our east city gate! City Lord! Allow us to escort you to safety!”
The Nangong Family head barked coldly, “Nonsense! Who said I’m leaving?”
The scout, bitterly trying to persuade him, pleaded, “City Lord! All of Quyang’s forces have been deployed, and there are barely three thousand guards left in the city; they’re no match for twenty thousand cavalry! As long as the green hills remain, there will always be firewood to burn! City Lord, leave now while there’s still time!”
The Nangong Family head clenched his fists tightly, the veins at his temples bulging, and shouted, “Where is the fourth child!”
Fourth Master Nangong held command over five thousand cavalry; if he could return from the northern gate in time and make use of Quyang City's naturally defensible terrain, there was still a chance they could hold off the Black Wind Cavalry.
And they didn’t need to hold out for long, just three more days, and the State of Liang's grand army would cross Yanmen Pass and head straight for Quyang City!
By then, with forces attacking from within and without in concert with the State of Liang's army, they would surely be able to crush the Black Wind Cavalry without leaving a single one alive!
Hoooooon———
From the distant sky came the deep, rumbling sound of a war horn, slicing through the silence that blanketed Quyang CIty like a blade and stirring the city into an overwhelming atmosphere of impending battle.
The scout, now in tears, sobbed, “It’s too late, City Lord… Fourth Master won’t make it back… and we can’t wait any longer… Please, flee now——!”
On the eastern watchtower, the rebel soldiers on patrol heard the horn of war and the thunder of battle drums. Like a tide of iron crashing through mountains and rivers, the dark-clad cavalry surged forward through the night like the army of the King of Hell, bringing with them an unstoppable, overwhelming murderous aura as they descended upon the city!
Terrified, the rebel soldiers on the walls collapsed backward in fright!
“It’s… it’s the Black Wind Cavalry…! The Black Wind Cavalry is attacking the city——!”
They knew exactly how many defenders were left in the city.
It couldn’t be held…
Quyang City could no longer be held…
Gu Jiao raised her hand, her gaze as cold as the moonlight falling on the towering city walls. “Archers, ready! Siege chariots, attack!”
The cavalry pushed the siege chariots forward at full speed, their massive iron rams pounding again and again into the heavy gates. Each deafening impact seemed to shake the heavens and earth, striking fear into the hearts of the defending soldiers.
A rebel officer stationed on the wall roared, “Loose the arrows! Kill them all!”
A rain of arrows poured down from the walls toward the advancing siege chariots.
But the cavalry beside the chariots had long been prepared. They raised their shields in unison, forming a seamless, iron-clad canopy overhead.
Arrows slammed against the shield dome with a clanging chaos, and a few with exceptional force even pierced straight through the iron guards.
“Damn!” One cavalryman cried, staring wide-eyed at the arrowhead sticking through the gap between his fingers, his whole body tensing in fear.
“Bring out the catapults!” The rebel officer roared again.
But before the catapults could be deployed, Gu Jiao loosed an arrow that pierced straight through the officer’s skull!
Just as the battle seemed poised to explode into full-scale combat, the rebel forces atop the walls suddenly withdrew.
Gu Jiao vaguely caught the words “orders from the City Lord” being passed around.
Soon after, a Black Wind Cavalry scout galloped up, reined in his horse before Gu Jiao, and cupped his fist in salute: “Reporting to the Commander, the Nangong Family’s people have fled through the south gate!”
Cheng Fugui glanced up at the now eerily quiet city walls and remarked, “No wonder they stopped fighting. Turns out they were just buying time to escort the Nangong Family out.”
There was no surprise in Gu Jiao’s eyes.
The Nangong Family abandoning the city was exactly what she had anticipated.
Their appearance at the city gates in the dead of night, dragging exhausted bodies into one last confrontation, had never been about truly engaging in a final, head-on battle with the remaining rebels inside.
Even if the enemy numbers inside were few, they still held the advantage in defensive conditions.
More importantly, the Black Wind Cavalry could no longer push forward; they were completely spent.
The war drums, the horns, the siege assault, they were all a bluff.
If the Nangong Family had possessed just a little more courage and had chosen to fight to the bitter end, the result could have been drastically different.
Following the brutal clash with Chang Wei's eighty thousand men and then marching straight into a siege, all of it wasn’t just to pressure the Nangong Family; it was to send a message to the prisoners they had taken as well.
——Don’t think we’re too tired to fight. As long as even one of you traitors remains, the Black Wind Cavalry will never fall!
It was a reckless military gamble, one that could have ended in total annihilation if even the smallest detail had gone wrong.
But if they hadn’t taken the risk, and Fourth Master Nangong had made it back with his army, another bloody massacre would have followed, and the price in lives would have been unbearable.
Fortunately, her gamble had paid off.
Gu Jiao lifted her head and looked up into the vast night sky, a silent breath of relief releasing from deep within her heart.
She gave her final command calmly, “Everyone, you may rest now. Send in the reserve forces to break down the gates, but remain vigilant against any surprises.”
The scout, choked with emotion, responded immediately, “Yes!”
Thud!
A cavalryman collapsed from his horse.
Moments later, the steed beside him also fell to the ground.
And this was no isolated incident.
Even without looking back, Gu Jiao knew that many more had already collapsed behind her.
Everyone, every single one of them had long passed their limits.
Yet until the moment she uttered the words “you may rest,” every single soldier had remained standing in battle formation.
Gu Jiao dismounted, her limbs aching with exhaustion. It was only then she realized how sore and heavy her entire body felt; her legs didn’t even seem like her own anymore.
Her red-tasseled spear was soaked in blood. Whether it was hers or the enemy’s, she could no longer tell.
She patted Black Wind King’s neck. The warhorse, just as exhausted, lowered its head in perfect understanding.
Man and horse pressed their foreheads together, breathing slowly, recovering together.
They had won.
The Black Wind Cavalry had achieved victory in a battle that by all odds should have been unwinnable.
They had lived up to expectations and seized Quyang City before the State of Liang’s army arrived.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
