Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The cavalrymen were inwardly reluctant, but there was nothing they could do as their mounts all wanted to follow the Black Wind King.
Horses were highly sensitive creatures; otherwise, they wouldn’t remain vigilant even while sleeping on their feet. Changes in their environment had a significant impact on them.
Fortunately, these were no ordinary horses. They were the strongest and most fearless horses of the Black Wind Cavalry among the six nations.
Having undergone the most rigorous obstacle training in the military camp, this width posed no real challenge to them. With a running start, they could leap across with ease.
However, some of the young colts, just three years old, had not received enough training and were still struggling to adapt to such a complex environment.
A few colts positioned at the end of the formation, tasked with hauling supplies, hesitated to move forward. After repeated commands from the horse trainer, one colt finally lifted its hooves and leaped.
Yet, it lacked confidence and failed to exert itself cleanly, its front hooves landed on the opposite side, but its hind hooves slipped into the void.
The colt panicked!
The Black Wind King turned back, leaping into the trench and using its head to push the struggling colt up.
Seeing this, the younger Black Wind Cavalry horses seemed to find reassurance. Gathering their courage, they followed suit, leaping across one after another. The Black Wind King remained in the trench, standing guard, ensuring each one made it safely to the other side.
Only after all the young Black Wind Cavalry horses had crossed did the Black Wind King finally climb out of the trench, now covered in mud and scratches from the thorns.
Its legs bore several wounds from the brambles. Gu Jiao treated its injuries before they continued on their journey.
The marching order of the three battalions was as follows: the Vanguard Battalion led the way, followed by the Charge Battalion, with the Reserve Battalion bringing up the rear. Wen Renchong belonged to the Reserve Battalion and rode at the back of the formation.
As he rode, he used a charcoal pencil to sketch the terrain and map the forest routes.
"Hey, give me some water."
Zhao Dengfeng rode up beside him and stretched out a hand.
"None." Wen Renchong replied without even looking up.
"You bastard!" Zhao Dengfeng shot him a glare, then turned to another cavalryman. "Li Shen—"
Li Shen completely ignored him, urging his horse forward without so much as a glance.
Zhao Dengfeng gritted his teeth. "The hell is wrong with you two? Who outranks whom here? Since when did you all start ignoring me?"
Back when Gu Jiao first sought to recruit these three, not one of them was present in the camp—or even willing to return to it. Yet now, here they were, having come back of their own accord, starting over from the lowest ranks.
Gu Jiao rode at the front, leading the way.
Advisor Hu and Mu Qingchen followed behind her under the scorching sun.
Gu Jiao suddenly stopped and scanned her surroundings.
Mu Qingchen asked, "What are you looking for?"
"A brook." Gu Jiao replied. "There should be a small stream nearby. If we follow it upstream, we can cross the mountain range."
After a pause, she added, "Go catch a deer. It has to be alive. Don't hurt it."
Catching a deer wasn’t difficult, but catching one completely unharmed was another matter entirely.
Mu Qingchen ended up covered in dust and dirt before he finally managed to tie up a young deer and bring it back.
Gu Jiao let the fawn lick some salt for a while before releasing it.
She patted the Black Wind King’s neck. "Big Boss, follow it."
They had to trail it discreetly without startling it. Black Wind King lightened its steps, carefully tracking the fawn’s scent from a distance. Before long, it led them to a brook.
The fawn had stopped to drink from the water.
Gu Jiao led the entire force forward, following the stream upstream. Along the way, she occasionally picked wild fruits or pulled up medicinal herbs.
The entire army was waiting for their young commander to get lost and cry in frustration.
In their minds, they had long pictured the young commander’s reaction to be:
"Ah! What do we do? What do we do? I can’t find the way! We’re doomed, doomed! It’s getting dark! Wolves are coming! I’m so scared! Snakes! There are venomous snakes in the trees!"
But in reality, what they saw was—
Their commander knocking out a fierce tiger with a single punch, using venomous snakes as makeshift ropes, riding the Black Wind King while waving a torch to drive away a pack of wolves.
Leading them safely through the swamp, successfully bypassing the miasma-filled forest.
Even the most seasoned soldiers had never seen anyone with her level of jungle survival skills.
Near the brook, Gu Jiao found a suitable clearing. "Alright, we camp here tonight. Cheng Fugui, Zhao Lei, you two will lead the night watch in shifts."
Cheng Fugui and Zhao Lei were the left and right commanding officers of the Vanguard Battalion.
The two of them cupped their hands in salute and responded, “Understood.”
Gu Jiao then added, “Also, pass down the order—no fires are to be lit.”
The two once again answered in unison, “Yes, understood!”
Without fire, they had no choice but to gnaw on cold, hardened flatbreads. The western region of Great Yan had a significant temperature difference between day and night. During the day, it was nearly as hot as summer, but to prevent food from spoiling, the cooks had baked the flatbreads until they were dry and tough. After just a few bites, one’s jaw would ache from the effort, and swallowing was a struggle, as the rough texture scraped against the throat with every gulp.
Everyone ate in silence, washing down the coarse flatbread with the cold water from the stream. No one complained, nor did anyone waste a single bite.
Gu Jiao sat by the stream, eating the same food as the soldiers.
However, while the soldiers huddled together, keeping to their own groups, they did not draw close to her. This left her looking rather alone.
As the others glanced at her small, solitary figure on the riverbank, frail yet resolute, a strange feeling stirred within their hearts.
……
After two days of travel, the Black Wind Cavalry finally reached the upper reaches of the river.
Here, the river stretched wide, and at its distant end, a towering waterfall cascaded down from a height of a hundred feet.
The closer they got to the waterfall, the narrower the river became. The water also grew shallower, making it easier to cross.
However, today, the current was noticeably swift. A single misstep, and one could be swept away by the rushing waters.
“Big Boss.” Gu Jiao tugged at the reins and asked, “Can we make it across?”
The Black Wind King took a few steps back, tensed its muscles, and suddenly leaped into the river.
The water wasn’t deep, it barely reached past its knees. With steady and composed strides, it waded across.
One after another, the rest of the Black Wind Cavalry horses followed suit, leaping into the river like dumplings dropped into a pot. Under the careful guidance of their riders, they managed to cross the turbulent waters without incident.
Yet, just as the last few young Black Wind Cavalry horses were about to make the crossing, the river’s current suddenly became even more violent. A powerful wave surged forth, knocking one of the small supply-carrying horses off balance and sweeping it downstream.
In an instant, the Black Wind King sprang into action, dashing forward and clamping its teeth onto the young horse’s reins!
Bracing itself against the fierce current, the Black Wind King fought with all its strength, inch by inch pulling the young horse back to safety.
Once both horses were safely ashore, everyone let out a collective sigh of relief.
Though the young Black Wind Cavalry horse had survived, the grain it carried had been lost to the river. Lowering its head in dejection, it looked utterly crestfallen.
The Black Wind King nudged it gently with its damp muzzle, a silent gesture of comfort.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
