Both Tianshan Pass and Yanmen Pass lay on Great Yan’s western front. The Black Wind Cavalry could reach them in fifteen days on a forced march, while the infantry and supply wagons would take a full month.
That meant that by the time they arrived, it would likely already be the ninth month.
Outside the imperial audience hall, Shangguan Yan gazed blankly toward the western horizon. "The wind at Tianshan Pass will already be bitterly cold by the ninth month. Make sure the soldiers bring enough winter garments."
Xiao Heng gave her a long, searching look. "What are you planning to do?"
Shangguan Yan said softly, "I need to request another imperial decree."
This war was too uncertain. The morale of Great Yan’s forces was not high. If they wanted to win, they needed the presence of the Son of Heaven to inspire the troops.
But the Emperor was already aged and had just suffered a stroke. He was clearly unfit for a long campaign.
That very day.
The Emperor issued an imperial decree, conferring the title of Crown Princess upon the Third Princess, Shangguan Yan. She would take command of the army on behalf of the Emperor, leading the western campaign as the supreme commander!
Along with them, there would also be fifty thousand Black Wind Cavalry and one hundred twenty thousand imperial troops.
This was all the forces that Shengdu could currently mobilize.
The remaining troops had either been taken away by the Han Family and the Nangong Family or were stationed at various borders and different cities, unable to be easily transferred.
At the Duke Estate, Gu Jiao was helping the Black Wind King try on its battle armor. It had its own armor as well. The previous set had fallen into the hands of the Han Family, and this new set had been specially crafted by Duke An’s order.
Gu Chengfeng walked over, pursing his lips. “Our forces aren’t even half of theirs. How are we supposed to fight this war?”
He hadn’t even realized that he had unconsciously used the word “our.”
Gu Jiao adjusted the Black Wind King’s armor and said, “We fight however we need to fight.”
Gu Chengfeng was just about to say something when he suddenly caught sight of Gu Changqing at the door. “Elder brother!”
Gu Changqing’s condition had improved significantly, and he looked much more spirited.
He had a long sword hanging from his waist and a bundle strapped to his back; it seemed he was also preparing for a long journey.
Gu Changqing looked at his younger sister and said, “This is such a dangerous mission. Were you planning to go alone?”
Gu Jiao glanced at him and replied, “You have a more important task.”
……
The western campaign was scheduled to depart on the twentieth of the eighth month.
The night before departure, Gu Jiao decided to make a trip to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.
Just as she pulled open the door, she saw Xiao Heng standing right outside.
“Do you need something?” She asked, momentarily taken aback.
Xiao Heng opened his mouth slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but hesitated.
“If there’s something you want to say, just say it directly,” Gu Jiao said.
Xiao Heng lowered his gaze and handed her two small boxes.
“What is this?” Gu Jiao asked.
Xiao Heng seemed a little uneasy. Taking a deep breath, he said, “The box on top is your birthday gift from last year. I had prepared it in advance, but you left for the border in a hurry, so I never got the chance to give it to you. This time, I probably won’t be able to spend your birthday with you either, so I’m giving you your gift in advance.”
Gu Jiao opened the box.
Last year’s birthday gift was a golden charcoal pencil.
Its casing was made of pure gold, and the interior had a rotating mechanism that allowed for replacing the charcoal lead.
Wow, an ancient version of a mechanical pencil.
This year’s birthday gifts were a small gold-leaf notebook and a pair of hairpins.
Speaking of which, her current notebook was indeed almost full.
It wasn’t strange to receive a pen and a notebook, but hairpins were quite unexpected.
He had truly grown up——his gifts no longer missed the mark like before.
Gu Jiao’s fingertips lightly touched the white jade hairpin. “I really like it. Thank you.”
Seeing how much she cherished it, Xiao Heng knew that he had finally chosen the right gift this time.
He let out a quiet sigh of relief and said, “Weren’t you about to head out? Go ahead.”
“Oh, alright.” Gu Jiao turned, put the gift box away, and stepped out of the room.
As he watched her departing figure, Xiao Heng steadied himself, suppressed the nervousness in his heart, and called out to her, “Gu Jiao, when you return, let’s get married.”
Gu Jiao turned around, looking at him in complete confusion. “Huh? Aren’t we already… married?”
Xiao Heng smiled gently. “Not as Xiao Liulang and the old Gu Jiao, but as Xiao Heng and the current Gu Jiao.”
I want to marry you, in my own name.
Gu Jiao’s lips curved slightly. “Alright.”
When I return, I will marry you.
……
When Gu Jiao walked out of Maple Courtyard, she caught sight of a small figure peeking out from behind a large tree.
Gu Jiao walked over and said, "Jing Kong?"
Little Jing Kong was momentarily stunned. He scratched his small head before stepping out and saying, "Ah, I got caught."
Gu Jiao reached out and ruffled his little head. "Were you waiting for me?"
"Mm… mm!" Little Jing Kong hesitated for a moment before nodding earnestly in admission.
He lifted his delicate little face, his large eyes blinking as he looked up at Gu Jiao. His thick, curled eyelashes made him resemble a tiny, fluttering eyelash fairy.
"JiaoJiao, are you going off to war again?"
His voice carried a tinge of distress and reluctance as he asked, "Why do you always have to go to war?"
This was a question that even Gu Jiao didn’t quite know how to answer.
She knelt on one knee before him and suddenly realized that Little Jing Kong had finally grown taller. Before, in this position, she could easily see the top of his head, but now, she was truly at eye level with him.
To be able to watch you grow up.
How wonderful.
Gu Jiao gently plucked a fallen leaf from his shoulder and softly said, "Everyone has their own responsibilities to fulfill. Saving lives, protecting the nation, and ensuring the people’s safety—these are all duties that must be carried out."
Little Jing Kong seemed to understand yet not fully comprehend. He thought for a moment, then clenched his small fists tightly and declared, "Then my duty must be to protect JiaoJiao! I will learn martial arts! I will grow up! In the future, I’ll go to war instead, so JiaoJiao won’t have to!"
Gu Jiao patted his little head, smiling as she said, "War is not a game."
Little Jing Kong furrowed his brows. "But war is very exhausting. I don’t want JiaoJiao to suffer!"
Gu Jiao replied, "I am not suffering."
Yet, Little Jing Kong still couldn’t bear to part with her. He was on the verge of tears, his grievance evident.
Gu Jiao held him in her arms for a long time before finally coaxing him back inside to sleep.
Only after the little one had drifted into slumber did Gu Jiao board a carriage and head to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.
……
In the purple bamboo grove, the Imperial Advisor was seated inside the main hall, playing a game of chess.
With the downfall of the Crown Prince and Han shi, as well as the revelation of the fake Emperor, the Imperial Advisor’s Hall had been cleared of suspicion, and the lockdown had been lifted.
Old Master Meng had already left, and the Imperial Advisor was playing a game against himself.
The disciples on duty had gone out to handle some affairs, leaving Ye Qing kneeling respectfully to the side, awaiting his master’s orders.
"I’m done playing." The Imperial Advisor suddenly said, returning the chess piece in his hand to the box.
Ye Qing quickly moved forward to sort the black and white pieces into their respective containers before carefully putting the board away.
Just then, Yu He’s voice came from outside the courtyard. "Master, Lord Xiao has arrived."
"Let him in." Lord Imperial Advisor instructed.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
