Two death warriors leaped into the courtyard.

Lady Nan turned to Master Lu and said, "Take them away first! I'll hold them off for a while!"

Master Lu retorted, "No! You take them and go! I'll hold them back!"

Lady Nan snapped angrily, "If you keep arguing, I'll divorce you!"

Although Lady Nan had lost her martial arts abilities, she was still an expert in poisons and hidden weapons. Compared to Master Lu, who couldn't even defeat the horse king, her chances of holding the enemy at bay were significantly higher.

"Humph! None of you are leaving!" One death warrior struck without hesitation.

Lady Nan immediately flung six throwing darts, creating an opening for Master Lu and the others. "Go, now!"

Gritting his teeth, Master Lu grabbed Gu Xiaoshun with one hand and Gu Yan with the other, then pushed off the ground and vaulted over the wall.

Unfortunately, they didn't get far before several more death warriors caught up to them.

A total of eight enemies surrounded them, blocking off every possible escape route from both the front and back.

The leader of the death warriors sneered, "Hand over the two brats, and I'll leave your corpses intact."

"Pah!" Master Lu spat coldly. "If you have the guts, come at me! Let’s see what you're made of!"

After his defiant words, he whispered to his two disciples, "Do you remember how to use the mechanical boxes?"

The mechanical boxes he referred to were not the half-finished ones made by Gu Xiaoshun but ones he had crafted himself—real life-saving devices.

However, making them was extremely time-consuming, and to this day, he had only completed two, both of which he had given to the children. Neither he nor Nan Xiang carried one.

The two nodded in understanding.

Lowering his voice further, Master Lu instructed, "In a moment, I'll hold them off. You two split up, find a place to hide, and use the breathing techniques I taught you to conceal your presence."

He had always disapproved of Nan Xiang’s reckless actions—like making enemies of the State of Zhao’s imperial family, coming to the State of Yan despite the dangers, and acting like a mother when she was only the Master’s wife.

But now, at the brink of life and death, he didn't hesitate to sacrifice himself to give the children a chance to survive.

Gu Xiaoshun gripped Gu Yan’s wrist tightly, "Understood, Father."

That single word "Father" made Master Lu’s nose sting and his throat tighten with emotion.

Xiaoshun usually called him "Master," and only occasionally "Adoptive father."

This was the first time he had ever called him “Father.” And most likely, it would also be the last.

A glimmer of moisture flashed within Master Lu’s eyes.

Age truly made one prone to tears.

He chuckled and shouted at the death warriors in front and behind, "Come on! If you have the skills, attack together!"

The death warriors wasted no words with him. Without hesitation, they raised their swords and charged straight at him.

Old Master Meng, forgive me! There’s no way the two children can escape while carrying you. I have no choice but to leave you behind to keep me company!

Master Lu untied the rope around his waist.

Old Master Meng had just begun to regain consciousness when Master Lu tossed him to the roadside, knocking him out again.

Old Master Meng: "..."

Master Lu was no match for these death warriors, but he fought with reckless abandon, forcing his way through and carving out a bloody path with sheer desperation.

Originally, it was Gu Xiaoshun who was holding onto Gu Yan’s wrist. But all of a sudden, Gu Yan twisted his hand around, reversing their grip so that he was the one now holding onto Gu Xiaoshun’s wrist instead.

"Go!" He made a swift decision.

The two of them dashed out of the street and disappeared into the empty night, fleeing for their lives.

Master Lu, determined to keep them from hesitating, didn't make a sound even when a sword pierced him. He clenched his teeth, swallowing the pain.

Yet, several death warriors still pursued them.

"There's a well ahead!"

Gu Yan spotted an open space and shouted, "Let’s hide in there!"

Gu Xiaoshun was an excellent swimmer.

He yanked open the well cover and jumped in first. Then, looking up, he wiped the water from his face and reached out to Gu Yan. "Jump! I’ll catch you!"

Gu Yan stood beside the well, gazing at Gu Xiaoshun’s encouraging eyes. The corners of his lips curled slightly before he suddenly grabbed the well cover.

Gu Xiaoshun panicked and whispered, "Gu Yan! What are you doing?!"

"Stay quiet." Gu Yan replied.

Gu Xiaoshun paddled in the water, trying to climb up. "Hey! Get down here!"

"I’m the older brother." Gu Yan said.

This time, it was his turn to protect him.

His body was frail, and his strength was limited. It took every ounce of energy he had in his arms just to lift the heavy well cover and seal it shut.

Then, without hesitation, he turned and bolted.

As he sprinted, he shouted toward another street, "Let’s split up! You go that way!"

The death warriors who had just arrived at the scene instantly dismissed the well, choosing instead to divide into two groups and give chase.

Gu Yan ran with all his might.

For sixteen years, he had been a sickly invalid, panting after just a few steps. It was only after his surgery that he finally understood how light and free a normal body could feel.

Never in his life had he run like this before.

He felt his heart pounding fiercely, as if an immense power was surging through him.

So this was what a normal body felt like?

How wonderful.

For the first time, he truly felt it.

“Stop right there! Or I’ll strike!”

A death warrior stood on the rooftop not far ahead, shouting sharply at Gu Yan

Gu Yan, of course, didn’t stop. He ran with all his strength, like a child who had never tasted candy and wanted to devour it all at once.

It was as if he wanted to run as much as he possibly could in one single moment.

The death warriors' mission was to capture him alive. And capturing didn’t mean inviting him politely.

Injuries didn’t matter, as long as he was still breathing.

Seeing that Gu Yan had no intention of cooperating, the death warrior’s gaze turned cold. Without hesitation, he leaped forward and struck, his palm hurtling straight toward Gu Yan’s back!

The death warrior had no idea that Gu Yan was physically weak. That single palm strike was powerful enough to damage his recently healed heart once again!

At that critical moment, the night air was shattered by the thunderous sound of galloping hooves. Almost simultaneously, a blood-red spear shot through the darkness, piercing the death warrior’s shoulder!

A bloodcurdling scream tore from the death warrior’s throat.

The sheer force behind the spear was far beyond what he had expected. He had no chance to resist and his body was sent flying backward, crashing heavily onto the scorching-hot bluestone pavement.

Gu Jiao, riding the Black Wind King, arrived with an icy expression.

She pulled the reins tight, shielding Gu Yan as she coldly stared at the bleeding death warrior. "Who gave you permission to touch my little brother with your filthy hands?"

The death warrior coughed up blood and reached for his dagger, but before he could strike, the Black Wind King stomped down on his chest, killing him instantly!

Gu Jiao yanked her spear free.

Another death warrior, realizing the situation was dire, turned to flee.

But could he escape?

Gu Jiao’s spear was like the Grim Reaper’s scythe. She gave him no chance to run, impaling his heart in an instant!

Retrieving her spear, she rode back to Gu Yan.

Gu Yan was a mess, his signature tuft of hair drooping lifelessly.

He stared blankly at Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao extended her hand.

Feeling guilty, Gu Yan took it. She pulled him up onto her horse, seating him behind her.

Gu Jiao sternly asked, "So you're playing big brother now?"

Gu Yan’s eyes flickered guiltily. He hugged her waist and rested his head against her. "Ah, I think I ran too fast... My head feels dizzy... My heart hurts too... Maybe my heart condition is acting up again..."

Gu Jiao closed her eyes and tightened her grip on the reins.

My own brother. My real, biological brother. Don’t get mad. Don’t get mad...

Gu Jiao then spurred her horse forward to find Master Lu and Lady Nan.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
