The women returned to their respective palaces.

Grannie Liu followed Imperial Consort Wang and quietly asked, “Your Highness, are you really planning to expose the Third Princess?”

“Of course not.” Imperial Consort Wang replied indifferently. “I was just testing them to see if Shangguan Yan had made a deal with them as well.”

Grannie Liu was puzzled, “Then why did Your Highness say you all should go see His Majesty tomorrow morning?”

Imperial Consort Wang sneered, “That’s just a delaying tactic, to buy time. You go prepare, I need to leave the imperial palace.”

Grannie Liu was startled, “Your Highness…”

Imperial Consort Wang looked serious, “This matter must be handled by me personally!”

……

The Imperial Advisor's Hall was brightly lit.

With Imperial Noble Consort Han’s fall, there was no need to keep that spy around anymore. Gu Jiao casually let him "break" something, and then had him sent back to the imperial palace.

Such clumsy palace servants, once sent back, would never be trusted or employed again, regardless of whether Zhang Dequan suspected them or not.

Old Chief was discussing the state of the ten major noble families with Xiao Heng, while Empress Dowager Zhuang held a jar of candied fruits, savoring them with great care.

Gu Jiao stood up and said, "I'll go cook."

Although the Imperial Advisor's Hall had its own cooks, she wanted to prepare a meal of hometown dishes for her family.

Empress Dowager Zhuang, visibly annoyed, retorted, "Come back! Who wants to eat your cooking?"

It was scorching hot, and entering the kitchen in this weather was unbearable!

Gu Jiao replied, "But didn’t you say at noon that you wanted to eat dishes from the State of Zhao?"

"I only said that in passing…" Empress Dowager Zhuang shot a glare at Old Chief and commanded, "You go."

Old Chief was reluctant. "The Imperial Advisor's Hall has cooks. Why bother with this nonsense?"

"I’ll go." Xiao Heng volunteered, as he also knew how to cook the State of Zhao’s dishes.

Old Chief’s body stiffened, and with a wave of his large hand, he stood up. "You’re not allowed to go! I’ll do it!"

Xiao Heng: "..."

In order to avoid his disciple’s disastrous cooking, Old Chief braved the scorching heat of midsummer and went to the kitchen to start the fire and prepare the meal.

Meanwhile, the Little County Princess had returned to the imperial palace.

Little Jing Kong was taken to the streets by Gu Chengfeng to buy candied hawthorn.

Inside the room, only Gu Jiao, Empress Dowager Zhuang, and Xiao Heng remained.

Gu Jiao let out a soft hum and said, "Grandaunt, after such a commotion in Han Shi’s palace today, the Third Princess’s act of pretending to recognize a heap of mothers should be exposed, right? What will they do now?"

In truth, if it were just her and Xiao Heng, the two of them could figure it out together. But since Grandaunt and Granduncle were present, they could afford to slack off.

Empress Dowager Zhuang, calm and composed, replied, "They will come knocking."

Speak of the devil, and here they came.

A disciple of the Imperial Advisor's Hall arrived at the Qilin Hall. Standing outside, he cupped his hands toward Xiao Heng and said, "Your Highness, there are two people outside claiming to have been sent by His Majesty to check on the Third Princess."

Xiao Heng exchanged a glance with Gu Jiao.

Empress Dowager Zhuang gave a slight nod.

Xiao Heng instructed the disciple of the Imperial Advisor's Hall, "Let them in."

"Understood!"

Moments later, a eunuch and a woman dressed as a wet nurse arrived at the Qilin Hall.

In the corridor, the wet nurse kept her head lowered, her figure hidden behind the eunuch.

The eunuch looked at the young palace maid guarding Shangguan Yan’s door and spoke kindly, "We’re here to deliver clothes for the Third Princess… Is His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson not present?"

The palace maid replied, "His Highness just stepped out to the outhouse."

That worked out perfectly, as it saved the trouble of coming up with an excuse to send away the Eldest Imperial Grandson.

The eunuch smiled, "In that case, I’ll greet His Highness later. May I go in to see the Third Princess?"

"Alright." Huan’er, the palace maid, said as she stepped aside.

The eunuch and the wet nurse entered the room.

Shortly after, the eunuch’s voice came from within. "It seems the clothes don’t fit quite right. Please measure the Third Princess again, and we’ll have new ones made. I’ll wait outside."

With that, he left the room and smiled at Huan’er. "I’m feeling a bit thirsty. Could you fetch me a cup of water?"

"Please wait a moment, eunuch."

Huan’er was successfully sent away.

Inside the room, the wet nurse circled behind the screen and coldly stared at the tightly closed bed curtains, saying, "Stop pretending, Third Princess. Come out already."

Sounds of movement came from within the mosquito net.

The bed curtains were then drawn aside, revealing Shangguan Yan’s bright, cheerful face. "Imperial Consort Wang, it’s been three days. How have you been?"

Imperial Consort Wang let out a cold snort, "You’ve stopped calling me imperial consort mother so soon?"

Shangguan Yan countered with a question of her own, "Are you worthy?"

Imperial Consort Wang was so enraged she nearly lost her balance. Truly, this was someone who discarded others without a second thought once they had served their purpose!

With an air of arrogance, Imperial Consort Wang declared, "Shangguan Yan, don’t get too full of yourself just yet. I know all about the things you’ve done, and everyone else knows your true face now too. By tomorrow morning, everyone will come with His Majesty to verify your injuries. By then, I fear you won’t even have tears left to cry!"

Shangguan Yan raised an eyebrow, "Oh, is that so? Then why has Imperial Consort Wang gone to such lengths to come all this way to warn me? Could it be that you don’t want to see me cry?"

Imperial Consort Wang’s gaze turned icy. "Shangguan Yan, stop being so glib! You’ve left so much evidence in our hands that if the truth comes out, your fate will be far worse than before! Right now, I’m the only one who can save you!"

Shangguan Yan asked, "Why would Imperial Consort Wang want to save me?"

Imperial Consort Wang replied, "I’m here to make a deal with you. As long as you fulfill the promises you made before, I have a way to help you avert tomorrow’s crisis!"

Shangguan Yan didn’t bother asking what her plan was. Instead, she smiled faintly and said, "I just tricked you not long ago, yet you dare to come back and strike another deal with me. Have you been standing in the rain too long and let water seep into your brain?"

Shangguan Yan truly had the ability to infuriate someone with just a few words. Imperial Consort Wang took a deep breath and used all her willpower to suppress the urge to stab her on the spot!

With an imposing aura, Imperial Consort Wang said, "I dare to come because I’m not afraid of you betraying me again! Because you have no choice!"

Shangguan Yan narrowed her eyes. "That sounds quite reasonable. What does Imperial Consort Wang want me to do?"

Seeing that Shangguan Yan seemed to be cooperating, Imperial Consort Wang’s expression softened slightly. "It’s very simple. At midnight, you create some kind of commotion—what kind of commotion is up to you. Once word reaches the imperial palace, I will come here with His Majesty to check on you. At that time, all you need to do is open your eyes, grab my hand, and call me ‘imperial mother’."

Shangguan Yan gave her a strange look. "Are you asking me to act like a fool?"

Imperial Consort Wang snorted coldly. "You’ve faked amnesia before, so what’s the big deal about acting like a fool?"

Shangguan Yan raised an eyebrow. "And what if His Majesty doesn’t believe me?"

Imperial Consort Wang’s face darkened. "Then that’s your problem. If you can’t convince His Majesty, you’ll just have to wait until tomorrow morning to be exposed!"

This old hag wanted her to acknowledge her as an imperial mother? How ridiculous!

Shangguan Yan put on her shoes, got out of bed, and strolled leisurely to the window. She gave Imperial Consort Wang a meaningful glance before saying, "Imperial Consort Wang’s offer is indeed tempting. Personally, I’d love to agree. But… I wonder if these few ladies would agree too."

As she spoke, she suddenly flung the window open with a dramatic motion.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
